Community Posts Open Letters To WotC About New OGL

It's a rough day when we find ourselves teaming up with some of the bad actors in the community to raise our collective voices.

Kickstarter's Director of Games on Why The Platform Attracts Lower OGL v1.1 Royalties

Considering how much money Gavin Norman has raised there and how about 90% of Zine Month is OSR games, I think there's an argument that they stand in that group too. Not by any one single campaign, but all of them combined. But the point is: sure, yeah, that too!

News Digest for the Week of January 6

Yeah, that OSR thing hurts a little. Of the two main OSR haunts on Reddit, the one with 900-ish members is "drama-free" (meaning, generally okay with racism, sexism, etc.), but the one with 25,000 members is fairly well moderated to get rid of anything that's not inclusive and welcoming. To...

Ryan Dancey -- Hasbro Cannot Deauthorize OGL

If anything's a "smoking gun" regarding intent, I think it's this.

RPG Print News – Free League, Cubicle 7, Modiphius, and More

For sure. I hadn't busted out mine since getting two boxes (Bestiary and Villain Codex), but now I'm buying them up like crazy because I've got a nephew turning 7 and I know I'll get use out of them soon!

Kickstarter's Director of Games on Why The Platform Attracts Lower OGL v1.1 Royalties

They enforce so few of their own rules when a particular campaign goes sideways. ;-P Kidding-not-kidding aside, I guarantee they are interested in how much enforcing WOTC will do, if indeed the OGL 1.0a is de-authorized. If they start losing all those sweet OSR campaigns, that'll certainly hurt...

Ryan Dancey -- Hasbro Cannot Deauthorize OGL

And it's going to be working overtime for a few days/weeks/months, quite possibly ;-P

Interesting that Paizo is getting out of (new) pawn sets, but Pinnacle's launching a few new ones. I love them!

    GM Confessional

I homebrew too much stuff that never sees light at the table. I enjoy rules lite to rules medium at most, erring toward the lighter side. Games with tons of character options that lead to mechanical widgets I have to know as the GM are problematic. 3e/Pathfinder is way too complex. 5e started...

    Anyone tried FASERIP?

Own it, played it, and used it as a starting point for my very own retroclone, Astonishing Super Heroes. Here are my thoughts on FASERIP: It's great, overall. There's definitely a sense of "re-balancing" but more so a lot of "standardizing" of how powers work. But the with the clearly spelled...

WotC Hasbro Bets Big on D&D

I'm surprised we're not hearing a lot more about how D&D Beyond will expand into solo-play that isn't entirely video game-like. I feel like that's a no-brainer for getting more player-side purchases. Just think of all the people (players mostly, but certainly DMs, too) that have a handful (or...

D&D 5E (2014) Rebalanced Tyranny of Dragons Coming In January

Even the "end of edition" releases for 3e and 4e were clearly products they hoped would do big numbers in light of a new edition's announcement: big compilation books, or efforts for products that are sort of "evergreen" titles for that edition, or that don't depend a lot on edition. I think an...

Best way to run 1st edition Forgotten Realms? (That isn't AD&D)

I'd argue that makes it a stronger contender, because IME the Realmsian archmagi and mythal-based magic (as well as Spellfire and all sorts of oddities that are probably not in the Grey Box, to be fair) rarely follow the established rules. Therefore, they seem to beg "NPC exceptions" or more...

Best way to run 1st edition Forgotten Realms? (That isn't AD&D)

That's what I would do. If you want to get a bit more of the "epic heroes" feel rather than "scrappy mercenaries", simply add 5e's death save mechanic and/or the short and long rests mechanics or some variation of them.

    Tell Me About Cortex Prime

I'm not a math guy, but here's a wonderful discussion of dice probabilities with the math done out. As for distinctions, here's the text straight from the Cortex Prime Game Handbook: As with every Cortex rule, assume there will always be exceptions: Distinctions are not required to play a...

I certainly don't assume they are fools. I do, however, assume people don't understand all of the possible consequences of the legal text of licenses, especially when trying to combine two different licenses to make something they can charge money for. The number of times I've seen the OGL or...

Not to be a cynic, but I can't believe for one second that WOTC would let this fly. Maybe "checked in and got no response, so let's do this!" but I just can't envision a world in which WOTC would allow this without contracts, and in those contracts, stipulate some very specific language that...
