D&D General How Important Is The "Shared Experience" To You?

I didn't run published D&D adventures for the first 20 odd years I've been gaming, just stole the maps or a plot point here or there. Didn't miss it then. I then spent about 10 years solely trying to run published D&D adventures. It was extremely difficult to change my ways (significantly...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D Beyond Giving Away Acquisitions Inc and Phandelver For Free!

Seconded. I knew almost nothing of Acq Inc before the book, and still have zero interest in watching live plays for it and all that, but the book is solid, the rules are fun, the writing's amusing, and the adventure's pretty neat. I've used parts of the adventure in a few different sessions now...

Check Out These Bladerunner RPG Previews

It looks exactly like ALIEN. And I think that's perfect!

A Look Inside The Marvel Multiverse RPG Playtest Edition

Weirdly, both this Marvel game and Renegade Studios' Essense20 system did exactly that.

A Look Inside The Marvel Multiverse RPG Playtest Edition

Thanks for the review. Looks like they are already releasing resources and errata, which suggests they are really on top of this playtest!

The Bladerunner Kickstarter Date Is... May 3rd!

Yeah, keep in mind one of the key components of game play in ALIEN is that the characters have competing agendas, and (usually) one of them is playing a company agent that is almost guaranteed to betray the entire party by the end of the scenario. And/or a robot that will do the same. ...which...

What do you think about Powered by the Apocalypse games?

I'm really glad they are out there. Some of the best GMing advice ever written comes from those games. But I don't enjoy running them. Moves and the high degree of player-driven setting creation are at odds with how I run games.

You Can Now Pre-Order My Little Pony TTRPG

Interesting! Did River Horse give up the license or lose it? River Horse's Labyrinth and Dark Crystal games are phenomenal...but as a company, it feels like they just publish these works of art in terms of game design and production and then just disappear back into the mists or something ;-P...

RPG Print News – Mongoose, Modiphius, River Horse, and More

It's good. Like really, really good. I'm shocked at how much they do with such a lite rule system. I'd argue both Labyrinth and Dark Crystal aren't exceptionally good for a completely new GM to run, but they are great for new players and GMs who either have only limited experience (but at least...

D&D General Recommend some books with random charts for D&D (in print > PDF a plus!)

Second Raging Swan's stuff: in print+PDF on drivethrurpg. Ultimate Toolbox is on DTRPG too but only as PDF. The book is expensive second hand, but IMHO worth it.

Roll20 Now Has 10 Million Users

From my experience and the handful of designers I've spoken to about this very subject, it's mostly time. It's a (relatively) new space to be making games in, and that specific model you describe requires interacting with a lot of other people: it's not like you advertise you're brand new...

Roll20 Now Has 10 Million Users

You guys are always very open about stuff, but I don't want to presume, so I'll ask: will you and the team be sharing some of that financial side of things at any point, such as in a retrospective once you have the VTT support fully operational on a few platforms? As an indie publisher, I've...

Release Astonishing Super Heroes Book 1: Basic Rulebook Is Out Now in Print and PDF

Astonishing Super Heroes Book 1: Basic Rulebook has launched! The FASERIP game system* has remained a popular roleplaying game with a highly active community of fans, players, game masters, and content creators since 1984. Brought into the world of open gaming thanks to Gurbintroll Games in...

What's your favorite superhero TTRPG and why?

For sure! Comics aren't beholden to modeling physics, whereas game systems inevitably have to reconcile to some degree. That being the case, I think there's an excellent opportunity for our team to do something about that in our second release for the game. We're already playtesting all sorts...

What's your favorite superhero TTRPG and why?

I might be getting into minutiae with this, but I'd expect that (Spidey = underdog versus Scorpion) because in a single issue Spidey should be the on the ropes against him to show he's a threat. It's Spidey's intelligence and access to entangling/restraining webs that gives him a shot at...

What's your favorite superhero TTRPG and why?

I don't mind going into detail since we're very conscious of our system being (1) backwards compatible with other FASERIP games, (2) not meant to replace some person's favorite version of FASERIP, but rather exist as optional add-on rules, and (3) act as an affordable, in-print option for fans...

What's your favorite superhero TTRPG and why?

Funny you should say that! At the risk of being a selfish shill, I'm about to release book 1 of 2 that is exactly that first week of February. AstonishingSuperHeroes.com The first book is the Basic Rulebook, which is basically OGL FASERIP with a dramatic social conflict system, and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why does 5E SUCK?

Mechanically? Inspiration and BIFTs: seemed like such a great idea, totally ignored in play by all groups I've run for. I'm terms of the books? The DMG is a disorganized book that gives you zero procedures for play, and is just better as a book of inspiring generators for prep, and as a magic...

    "Casual" RPGs

Cortex is session focused: not a huge focus on advancement, the GM can solve a lot with either the Doom Pool mod and/or the simpler Test, Contest, Challenge systems in Tales of Xadia, etc. Labyrinth the Adventure Game is effectively old school D&D with narrative mechanics and a dungeon ready to...
