    D&D 5E (2014) L&L - D&D Next Goals, Part One

Yes, they do. The D&D board games (Castle Ravenloft, etc.) are all in that range. But I suspect that D&D will probably eschew maps and tokens (and tactical rules) in the core game, and try to keep the price under $50.

    D&D 5E (2014) L&L - D&D Next Goals, Part One

shidaku: If you follow what WotC has been saying, most people don't play higher than 10th level. If you have four classes and four races over 10 levels, that's enough to support a LOT of casual gameplay. It's only the hardcore gamer who's going to be demanding the gnome and the bard and Limited...

    D&D 5E (2014) L&L - D&D Next Goals, Part One

It sounds like they want to do: WALMART-FRIENDLY BOXED SET (base game) WALMART-FRIENDLY (?) ADVENTURE SERIES GAME STORE-FRIENDLY RULES EXPANSIONS ...with EVERYBODY starting with the WFBS. I didn't read the Mearls quote in context, but it sounded like he was saying that the WFBS will have LESS...

D&D 5E (2014) Time to ditch the old ability modifier array?

Would you get the same effect if you just lowered starting ability scores? I'd prefer it if most characters started with a 16 (or lower!) in their key ability score.

    D&D 5E (2014) What's your ideal Fighter damage ratio?

I'd want a high level fighter to do at least 40 or 50 points of damage per hit, I think. A d8+5 yields about 10 points of damage, so you'd need to make up another 30 to 40 in other bonuses. That looks like about 10d6 to me. Or maybe 6d12?

Brooklyn, NY - Looking find group

Welcome to New York! I recently started playing with a group in Manhattan that's looking for a new member or two. It looks like we're going to be playing Wednesday nights (?) in the new year, from 6 to 10 or so. We're doing a 5e game right now, but have talked about switching up periodically. If...

    D&D 5E (2014) Turn-a-round? Tricky terminology.

Yeah. I picked up on the same lack of clarity in the tweets. They need to be very explicit about what "round" and "turn" mean and then they need to be very precise every time they use those terms. Right now there are a number of places in the playtest packet where it is substantially unclear.

Doing it wrong Part 1: Taking the dragon out of the dungeon

This is probably just my hang-up on terminology, but "railroad game" doesn't make a lot of sense as a generic descriptor. It would be better to say "plot-driven game" or "event-driven game" where railroading is a potential danger to be avoided. It's sort of like describing hunting as "that sport...

"The aim is for the players to have fun"

Sorry if someone has pointed this out upthread, but it's sounds to me like the problem is you're not very good at choosing appropriate leveled threats for your PCs. As a result, the mortality rate is significantly higher than it should be. In a well-structured game, there should always be the...

D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore bits about prestige classes in 5e (and NEW playtest packet!)

Been so long since I've read any of the 2e books, but I think we can all agree that if there was something "kit-like" implemented in 5e, we'd want it to be implemented *well*. And I think there's a general consensus that TSR got better at creating and balancing kits as time went on. What are...

Doing it wrong Part 1: Taking the dragon out of the dungeon

I have a hard time understanding how you could separate the two. Obviously, you can talk about what happened during the game afterward, in the same way you could talk about a game of Monopoly or what you had for breakfast in the morning. But to the extent that a role-playing game involves...

D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore bits about prestige classes in 5e (and NEW playtest packet!)

If a prestige class is meant to represent an organization, then I either need (a) super generic prestige classes, so I can fit them to my own campaign, or (b) the tools to easily create balanced prestige classes from scratch. I don't have much faith that I will get either of these. As such...

D&D 5E (2014) Dear WotC: An Idea On How To Make Next a Success - Bring Back The Stories!

I have no real objection to this existing, but I wouldn't have much use for it. As a rule, I don't buy setting specific material. I'm looking for tools that I can use to build out my own game.

What style of science-fiction in your D&D ?

I've used all of these at various times before, with the exception of the retro-Flash Gordon vibe, but I gotta ask...? In what sense is David Lynch's Dune steampunk?

    D&D 3.x 3.5 reprints....who has them?

Yeah, I can't think of any other variables beside the errata, the newness, and the somewhat prettier-ness. I'm running a 3.5 game, so I picked up a copy of the PHB. I'm home brewing all the monsters and magical items so I didn't see much purpose in picking up the MM or DMG. In all cases, it...

    D&D 5E (2014) Magic and Non-Magic Healing Proposal

I greatly prefer this system to standard hit points.

D&D 5E (2014) Do Away with Weapon Attack, Magic Attack, Save Bonuses

I'd really prefer *all* ability scores scale with level, though I understand why it's problematic. One of my pet peeves is that *any* 20th level character has a low Charisma. Higher level characters should ooze menace.

    Things from Beyond the Stars

If it helps to clarify the discussion, I found this post virtually incomprehensible. It didn't make any sense to me at first, but as I studied it more carefully I gleaned some meaning from it.

    Alignment: Chosen or awarded?

The problem with early versions of the D&D alignment system was that they tended to assume there were only 9 possible responses to any situation and that they would fit neatly into a three-by-three grid. In a more realistic approach, there are a near infinite range of personalities that might...

Where would you put a D&D museum?

Gencon aside, does Indianapolis have a significantly larger gaming community than Chicago, New York, or Boston? (Just to pick three larger cities.) It seems to me that the logic of putting a D&D Museum in Indianapolis is only incrementally more sound than placing it in Lake Geneva. Indianapolis...
