    Playtest Update

This sort of calls into question why you bought 2e, since it wasn't that different than 1e. That said, I don't see any evidence that 5e will be a clone of any previous edition. I will say I agreed with almost everything in the latest update, particularly the need to make monsters more...

    Who's playing Marvel Heroic Roleplaying?

Played this at Gencon and really enjoyed it, but the "weird" mechanics are definitely a stumbling block to winning over my main gaming group.

    House rule brainstorming: grappling sucks

I just do it as a series of opposed rolls. The grappler uses STR and the defender gets to choose between DEX or STR. If the defender uses STR, he can reverse and grapple the grappler. A grappled opponent is immobilized and needs to take his action to try to break or reverse the grapple. The...

Are you part of the "Lost Generation" of RPG gamers?

There are a couple rules/options in 2e that I prefer to all other editions: 1) I generally prefer Kits to Prestige Classes, Paragon Paths, etc. Yes, they were unbalanced, but they allowed a great deal of flexibility for your character from Level 1. 2) Specialty Priests. Again, the rules...

    Evolving editions?

Can you give any examples? I also don't remember having any apprehension about tinkering with 3.x rules.

Anyone pick up the 3.5 reprints?

Awesome. Will pick this up then.

Anyone pick up the 3.5 reprints?

Thanks! So to clarify: are these rules simply added at the end? Does that mean that they're still there in their old/un-errata'd form earlier in the book, or is it just a summation at the end?

What is the right super heroes system for my campaign?

I played the new Marvel RPG at Gencon this year and had a great time. For my home game, I run a lightly modded version of the old Marvel FASERIP system from the 80s. Both great options.

Anyone pick up the 3.5 reprints?

There was apparently some back and forth at the time about whether the updates in the Rules Compendium counted as errata or not. I think someone at Wizards said "If it's not free, it's not errata," but that's only what I've gleaned from Googling after the fact.

    D&D 5E (2014) Multiclassing--Which and Why?

The hack I do for 3.5 multi-classing is to let treat caster level as character level. So a 19th level fighter, 1st level magic-user will only have a couple first level spells, but they'll be able to cast them at 20th level caster level. (So at least they'll get all 5 missiles from the magic...

Time between level-ups: always the same or increasing?

I'm for a steady progression generally, but I can see the virtue of leveling a little faster at first, when characters are at their most fragile, to get them over the hump. Ultimately, Experience gain is almost always something I house rule, so it don't have much invested in what the "core...

Anyone pick up the 3.5 reprints?

You are now the third person to ask. I was the first. Doesnt sound like anyone's actually bought the thing yet to check. I looked on Wizards' site and there was no corresponding thread so I think we're boned until somebody breaks down and buys the thing or figures out how to get Wizards on the...

Anyone pick up the 3.5 reprints?

Does anyone know if the errata updates in the 3.5 reprints include changes made in the Rules Compendium? (For example, the change to Wildshape.) I believe that the RC consolidated rules from other sources, but I'm not sure if they all qualified as "errata" for purposes of this update.

AD&D 1E Is anybody playing 1e with the reprints?

I used the reprints for a 1e game at GenCon, but now they're collecting dust. As a side note: There's a very funny typo in the Psionics table in the back of the PHB that doesn't appear in the original volume.

    D&D 5E (2014) How I ran combat in AD&D - doable in 5e?

This is how I ran the Next game I ran this past weekend. (And it's how I ran a lot of 3rd edition and even 4th edition.) It worked fine.

We need to stop short changing thieves on equipment

I may be misremembering, but isn't bag of marbles in the current playtest equipment list? I seem to remember passing them up for some caltrops though.

    Scaly Races (Wandering Monster column)

At Gencon, Schenedette (sp!) stressed that he sometimes puts up artwork that he thinks missed the mark so that he can elicit fan reaction. Discouragingly, the majority seems to be fine with whatever, as evidenced by the reception to the goblin last week. The comments looked like they were...

    My crazy...OUTRAGEOUS idea for Kobolds!

I love kobolds, but one of the things I love about kobolds is how killable they are. (I once ran a dungeon where one trap involved dropping kobolds on the party from murder holes in the ceiling. Since falling damage was 1d6, half the kobolds died on impact.) I'm not opposed to variants, but...

    That's a Wood Elf?

Well, anecdotally, Halflings are doing just fine. I playtested Next at Gencon this past weekend, and there were: Human rogue, Elf rogue, Halfling rogue, Halfing rogue*, Elf wizard, Human warlock. (*One of the halflings kept insisting he was a cleric, even going so far as to heal one of the...

    Some playtest questions

There were plenty of half-elven fighter/magic-user/thieves in AD&D. Don't see how this is out-of-place.
