Newbie looking to play in NYC area.

Don't have a group in NYC right now, but I live in Astoria (off the R) and enjoy 3.5. If anyone else crawls out of the woodwork, maybe we can get something going.

    4 groups of D&D fans, not 3

You seem to be forgetting new gamers. If we don't continue to attract new gamers to the hobby, the hobby will die.

AD&D, looking backwards, and personal experiences

Why is the original poster comparing a game written in the 1970s with games written in the 1990s? 2e came out in what? 1989?

    D&D Next Q&A

The answer around adding levels to NPCs gave me a great idea: Every player should have an XP value that's written on their character sheet! Otherwise, how will I know when my kobolds level up???

    A difficult question

I suppose this makes sense if you only want/need the core books to play. If you want a game that's supported year-in and year-out, you need more than 3 people enjoying/playing/supporting the game. Honestly, I already have role-playing games that I can play. If D&DN was wildly successful but not...

    Wandering Monsters: Orcs and Gnolls

Have to agree with the earlier poster that for my personal campaign, I would likely disregard all of this, but I understand WotC's need to (a) start somewhere and (b) present a consistent take on all of their IP. Hasbro is making movies out of G.I. Joe, Transformer, even Battleship. At one...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Ability Scores

I'm for raising ALL ability scores periodically in lieu of attack bonuses, saves, etc. The taciturn fighter should be more charismatic at 20th level then he was 1st.

    D&D 5E (2014) PDFs and Next

If there are no PDFs, the odds of me buying the core books drops to about 50% and the odds of me buying anything past that drop to 0%.

    How is Baba Yaga pronounced?

Another suggestion was Yo Gabba Gabba, which is apparently hysterical if you're nine.

    How is Baba Yaga pronounced?

In a recent campaign, there were four ancient witches in the world, each more hideous and creepy than the last, and they were named: Yaba Baga Gaba Yaya Gaga Baya and... well... the fourth one never really came into it.

Your Three Golden Gates of Game Design

Is it easy to play? (this is less about being easy to learn than it is being straightforward to play at the table) Is it fun to play? (fun for a horror RPGS might mean being really freaked out) Does it adequately cover the content? (hopscotch can be fun and easy, but that doesn't make it a good...

How about this idea: At-Will/Encounter/Daily for EACH spell

I kind of like the idea of an at will that you can "burn out" with a daily version. Sort of the opposite of the reserve feats in 3e.

    The Flight Topic.

Unaided flight for spellcasters is pretty genre breaking. Wizards in fantasy literature don't generally fly (even the really powerfuly ones). I'm OK with flying carpets, airships, mounted flight, etc. but (in my opinion) flying unaided should really be discouraged by the rules, particularly in...

    Losing interest....

Given that Pathfinder is out now and D&D Next isn't coming out for another year, I find this to be perfectly reasonable.

    Monte Cook's New Website

He says on the site that Malhavoc is specifically for OGL/d20 games and that MCG is for original/non-d20 games.

D&D 5E (2014) SR and DR; is there a place in Next for them?

In an ideal world (for me specifically) armor would grant damage reduction and not positively affect defense (nee AC) and hit points would represent actual damage. But in a world where AC is a mix of armor and agility and hit points are a mix of luck, vitality, and damage capacity, I don't...

    Saving Throws through the editions

There's a long tradition of spells that target AC in D&D going back to the rays in 3e and some of the missile/munition spells in earlier editions. I haven't had a chance to dig through the playtest rules, but are there really that many bonus-to-saves effects that this is particularly complicated?

    D&D 3.x 3.5 Edition Reprints

Now if they could only sell me some well indexed PDFs! I was took the linked survey, and I was interested to see that they might release more material, including (if the last question is asking what I think it's asking) potentially some "Best Of" type compendiums. One of the reasons I still...

D&D 5E (2014) Would you like to see a complex social interaction module early in 5E?

Again with the proviso of "play your game the way you want to play it": One of the core benefits of role-playing games is the opportunity it presents to practice role-playing skills: taking on a new role, getting into the mindset of a different person/character, problem solving, etc. These are...

D&D 5E (2014) Poll: Should Orzel's "Favored Enemy" idea be implemented in D&D Next?

It's not a bad idea. Personally I prefer an option that's focused on actual hunting/pursuit. Something like "if you spend X amount of time observing or tracking an enemy, you get a +x to hit and opposed checks and/or +xd6 to damage." This removes the "racist" element to the character and puts...
