    D&D 5E (2014) Simulation vs Game - Where should D&D 5e aim?

I think the two of you are simply stating the distinction between the gamist and the simulationist view. From a practical standpoint D&D (and indeed most RPGs) contain an awkward mix of explicitly gamist and simulationist elements. Stating a preference for one approach versus the other is...

    D&D 5E (2014) [Merged] D&D Next/5E Release Schedule Threads

If a group gets 10 hours of enjoyment, and it costs $20, how is that a fail? Compare to going to see 4 movies (5 tickets at $10) and it's a steal. It's explicitly a *STARTER SET*, not D&D itself, so I don't see any problem with this approach. Where you see "fail" I see "win-win".

    D&D 5E (2014) Art in 5e...?

I wish they'd release larger versions of the covers. There's only so much squinting I'm prepared to do on a Monday.

D&D 5E (2014) So, what are your plans now?

I'm running a campaign with the 5e play test rules now and we won't be finished till November at the earliest. I'll take a look at the PHB rules when they come out, and if it's easy enough for us to transition over, we will. Otherwise, we'll finish up on the play test rules set and then decide...

D&D 5E (2014) Street date for D&D Next Starter Game is July 15

Hmm. Still holding out hope that the Starter is actually "an adventure box" with pre-gens, starter rules, a 10 level adventure, and some dice. If newbies like playing the game, they could then pick up the PHB for character creation and the DMG for creating adventures. (Am aware this opinion...

    D&D 5E (2014) Traits, Flaws, and Bonds L&L May 5th

Historical precedent says that this is not necessarily so. If it helps, consider the difference between a book of rules about Chess and a book of Chess strategies. The rules of D&D describe the activity of role-playing your character, and there is various supplemental information that provides...

    D&D 5E (2014) Simulation vs Game - Where should D&D 5e aim?

I think the flaw in your logic is that role-playing is fundamentally a hybrid of game and storytelling. It's never strictly one or the other by design.

Pathfinder 1E What race would you choose to dominate a setting.

Except these aren't alien races. They share a world, exist in the same ecosystem, face the same threats, frequently worship the same gods, etc. Sure there are distinguishing features (longevity, native habitats, maybe relationship to magic) but there's no reason to assume that what we think of...

D&D 5E (2014) Tyranny of Dragons Panel at PAX East Today

This is sounding more and more like the "Self-Contained D&D Adventure in a Box that you can sell at Walmart" model that I was suggesting a while back. The big question mark is around how much of the story you get through any of these "platforms". How shortchanged will you feel if you only play...

D&D 5E (2014) Tyranny of Dragons: The New Edition?

Wizards has recently said that there will only be one Player's Handbook, one Dungeon Master's Guide, and one Monster Manual for this edition. So I think the answer is a pretty clear "no." Although it's an interesting idea for an alternate approach to the game. A month or two back, I was...

D&D 5E (2014) Saving Throws not mandated by class

A suggested multiclass rule: When you multiclass, you can choose to replace one or both of your "good saves" with those provided by the new class. (Still breaks down a little with the classes that only have one.)

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore Article 4/1/14 (Fighter Maneuvers)

It's not visible on the front page for me (still showing the Realms article) or in the L&L archive or the general archive. But, yeah. Neverwinter video aside, it's obviously not an April Fool's Prank.

D&D 5E (2014) Would a repeat of the large errata from the previous edition put you off of Next?

There are different kinds of errata, right? There are fixes to typos, omissions, etc. which are inevitable but hopefully minimal, and then there errata that constitute deliberate rules changes. It's this second type of errata that I'd just as soon avoid.

D&D 5E (2014) What's the rush? Has the "here and now" been replaced by the "next level" attitude?

It is absolutely true that 3e and 4e encourage (but does not require) a greater emphasis on long-term, level-by-level character construction. The conclusion that "therefore players today don't care about anything but leveling up" is ridiculous.

Quick Question: Wizard from D&D transports to our world. Can they still do magic?

I recommend waiting until the wizard has transported to our world, and then simply asking him.

D&D 5E (2014) Is long-term support of the game important?

1: You're making a false comparison. Wizards didn't declare their XP Chart or Beholders or Mind Flayers "closed content." That content was never released as part of their OGL system reference document. As the originators of the license and the SRD, they had the option to include (or exclude)...

D&D 5E (2014) Is long-term support of the game important?

You can't declare content Closed if it's based on existing d20 content and virtually everything Pathfinder produces is. The Gods can be declared Closed, because that's all fluff.

D&D 5E (2014) Is long-term support of the game important?

Two quick points: 1) Paizo isn't doing that out of the kindness of their hearts. They have no choice, because they built PF off the OGL. If they weren't posting their stuff online, third parties would be (and were and continue to do so) 2) It's not "TWELVE" sources -- it's one. And it's all...

    D&D 5E (2014) Are you ready for a new edition of D&D?

Definitely not ready! I just started playing D&D Next a couple years ago! Although, I am about ready for a rules update!

D&D 5E (2014) Should there be multi-class versions of all the classes?

Indeed. That's one of the primary reasons that I'm a fan of the "apprentice levels." (That and it allows you to start at 3rd level with a more reasonable number of HP.)
