The new 4E PDF's odd changes... [Tues PM: problem fixed]

I always find it funny when companies, in order to "fight piracy", come with products which are actually worse than the pirated ones. This happened when music cds started not working on PCs. That made me initially purchase the originals and, after that, be forced to download it from emule in...

    Double post. Sorry.

Best Version of Call of Cthulhu

I have 3rd and 5th editions, and they're mostly the same. Mechanically, the game hasn't suffered any changes apart from some very small ones (skill caps at 99% instead of 100%, higher beginning skill points), so you could go with any of them and you wouldn't be wrong ;) About Trail of...

    Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Campaign Setting

When Pathfinder RPG comes, you shouldn't have to change almost anything. The setting is not going to be changed because of 3.Paizo as if it were the Forgotten Realms ;) The Gazetteer is an "abridged" version of the Campaign Setting. It's not an "update", but an "expansion". It just depends on...

    4e: The final word

And that's what I was trying to say. Can an idea or concept as "D&D" have an owner? And if it can, who is that owner? There are people who'd say that an idea is the sole property of its author. So, then, "D&D" is whatever Gygax and Arneson say (said :() it is. There are other people who'd even...

    4e: The final word

Your definition is based on the idea that a concept such as "intellectual property" can be an absolute, and it's only so from a certain point of view... ;)

When will the time be for a 3.5 retro-clone?

I know that it's still quite easy to get the 3.5 core books, and that sites as The Hypertext d20 SRD (v3.5 d20 System Reference Document) :: d20srd.org make this not as necessary for the industry/community as OSRIC or Labyrinth Lord, but I like the idea of having a nicely bound single book with...

Do you read RPG books all the way through?

Mostly setting, adventures and supplemental rules, in that order of preference. What I almost never read are "lists": I won't read a Feats or Spells chapter, but I love reading the "DM wisdom" section that every core books seems to have :)

Pathfinder 1E What Direction is Pathfinder Headed In?

That would be very interesting... If the monster classes are not similar to what 4e is doing now. We already have 4e for that, don't we? ;)

    4e: The final word

That's sad. Almost as sad as someone padding his post count quoting someone padding his post count quoting someone padding his post count quoting someone padding his post count. Fortunately, that'll never happen ;)

When playing D&D I use battlemats...

It depends in the flavor of D&D I'm playing. With 3.x, I always use battlemats. With Basic D&D (RC/LL), I very rarely use them.

Pathfinder 1E What Direction is Pathfinder Headed In?

Well, there have already been whole parts replaced (the Barbarian, for example), although I think the mechanics will be more or less the same. Maybe the CMB rules will have some CD tweaking or the text of some feats/spells/items will be changed to power up/nerf it, but nothing spectacular. The...

Pathfinder 1E What Direction is Pathfinder Headed In?

Currently, I'm DMing (playtesting) Pathfinder Beta. By now, I love the CMB, the "free cantrips/orisons" rule, the reworking of the skill rank system and the rearrangement of magic items (belts and headbands above all). The revamped classes... Well, they all have more options, that's for sure...

    What's your core?

Now that 3.5 is officially dead (at least as "D&D 3.5"), we have the opportunity to fix a core set of books to use in our campaigns. So, which books are you using to play 3.5? I find myself quite comfortable with PHB/DMG/MM alongside with Tome of Horrors, Spell Compendium and Book of Iron...

Pathfinder 1E What Direction is Pathfinder Headed In?

This. Paizo doesn't sell rules; it sells adventures and background material. But for that material to be sold in significant numbers, it must be backed by a core rulebook which is currently in print. If WotC doesn't sell that book anymore, Paizo doesn't have any realistic option apart from...

Tomb of Horrors - your experiences?

And that's what makes it so fun :) It's like playing Tetris: You know you're going to lose, so it's all about how long you last and how much fun you have in your way to the grave :D

Pathfinder 1E What Direction is Pathfinder Headed In?

If I'm not wrong, the Beta vs. Final versions of Pathfinder will be something similar to the differences between the 4e core books vs. the DDI errata updates.

Pathfinder 1E What Direction is Pathfinder Headed In?

Yes, you're missing something: it's the internet. ANY change, for small it might be, it's going to face someone who'll angrily state that the've "ruined D&D forever". I'm actively using the Beta as my new PHB and DMG bundled in one book. Changes are really small and more cosmetic than anything...

    Combo menu encounter design

That's a very standard way to design adventures (not encounters). Loot at your PCs and let each of them shine once. Did one player invest in Knowledge (architecture & engineering)? Have dungeons be built in strange ways. Does he have Perform (oratory)? Make up a scene where someone has to give...
