Has 4e changed the way you play D&D? Forked Thread: Discussing 4e Subsystems: POWERS!

If a DM assigned the effects of my actions as the quoted text says and I'm a player, I'd turn on my nintendo DS. That's it, if the DM is doing the same thing whatever I try, why bother trying new things? For the kick to the groin, unarmed attack at -4 (for aiming). If it hits, target is...

Was there a real need for a fourth ed.? Or would tweaking 3.5 have done it for you?

It's the 90% rule ;) Essentialy, you can create a NPC/monster for 3.5 in about 3-5 minutes with an 90% accuracy. The other 10% is what takes the 1/2-1 hour to complete. The same reasoning serves for conversions. I can take the 4e Monster Manual and use its monsters as-is without any problems...

    4E and the OGL

I didn't realize they were different until you said it and I rechecked them, so I wouldn't say that "difference" is an issue :p

    Classic for Basic

Thanks for all the replies :) Ritght now, I think I'll use B2, using NPCs at the keep for some missions (maybe make a mission for each NPC, so they'll do something different depending on which one they talk to). I'll check out other modules suggested here, too. I need to encourage speaking in...

    Hackmaster

HM is a good game that solves some of the bugs of 1e/2e AD&D (skill system), adds some interesting new features (open die rolls, % for all the abilities) and has some other rules planted there as humor (I think mainly because of the license): (Honor, the alignment chart, PC generation charts...)...

    4E and the OGL

If WotC were OK with the OGL and hadn't any issues with it, they wouldn't have tried to force the GSL upon 3pp. Fortunately, there are quite a few who have realized that they can still use the OGL and create 4th ed-compatible products.

    When you don't fit in

My advice: read more comics ;) Comic-books, specially the "superteam" ones are full of inter-party conflict without going so far as to split the party (in most cases). I'm thinking about Wolverine-Cyclops in X-Men, or the whole roster of JLI. So, give them a speech about how killing unarmed...

    Cynicism of an AD&D refugee

I wish they'd done something similar to Mutants & Masterminds, with effect-based powers to which you could add descriptors and modifiers. So, instead of, say, 30 different "[w]+ability damage, X side effect" powers, we could have 1 "[x]+ability damage" power with 30 possible modifiers as...

    The mythical ideal of 1E?

OTOH, I ran a 3.5 Crucible of Freya + Tomb of Abysthor + RttToEE campaign for months without changing a comma from the modules. OK, maybe there was a +1 here or there which was supposed to be different, but it didn't really matter, as if you ran an AD&D module using BECMI without changing the AC...

New D&D Miniatures Set - Hmm...

Wow. Seriously, what happened to the good sculptors? I liked Night Below a lot. I loved Desert of Desolation. From there, it's been spiraling down. Dungeons of Dread had just a few good sculptures. Against the Giants had some rares worth having. This one... the cyclops is kinda OK, but that's...

    The mythical ideal of 1E?

A good thing about Basic (being it OD&D, Holmes, B/X, BECMI, RC or LL) is how easy it is to tweak. For example, I allow demihuman classed characters: they get attack, saves and spells as per their class and the special abilities from their "race class", plus a 10% penalty to xp. Also, for...

    Classic for Basic

In fact, I'll use attack bonuses and ascending AC; I find them more intuitive and easy to grasp, so C&C modules would need no conversion ;) It's just that I want to show them something that says "Dungeons and Dragons" on the cover, so they know what to ask their parents for Christmas :D...

    Classic for Basic

Thanks, I'll have a look at them. Is "The Black Knight" any good? What I first had planned was having one character per each 2 students (they're 10 in total, and that'd be quite a crowd), but having all of them control just one character might not be a bad idea to start... Most of them are cheap...

    The mythical ideal of 1E?

My first D&D was 2e, and I loathed that system. We had a lot of fun, but that's because we are fun people (and our DM was superb). We were core only, mostly because our DM refused to read anything else, so we just skipped all the complete and option madness. But, when I compare 2e to 1e, I just...

    Classic for Basic

After some one-shots, I've decided to run a short RC/LL campaign for my students (well, for some of them, at least). They'll begin at 1st level with 10 extra hp (I don't want to discourage them, so let's let them "win" ;)), and I'm looking for a good introductory module for 10-11 years old kids...

5 rpgs I would take to a deserted island.

The 5 games I'd take: * D&D Rules Cyclopedia. * Call of Cthulhu * Mutants & Masterminds * Dark Heresy * Traveler That's assuming I can only take the core book for each game. If I'm allowed to take also minis, battlemats and splatbooks/modules, I'd choose Pathfinder instead of Dark Heresy (I'd...

Anybody knows when is it coming out? I want it for my D&D-esque rules collection ;)

Tell Me About The Famous Dungeons of D&D

I'd like to add Tomb of Abysthor, one of my personal favorites because of the dungeon politics and different spaces. It's a place your PCs can visit many times, each one on a different quest, and find the dungeon changed because of their acts. Add my vote, too, for Tomb of Horrors, Temple of...

Preferred Format: Ret. to the Temple of Elem. Evil or Exped. to the Ruins of Greyhawk

In fact, what I generally do (and I suppose I'm not the only one) is using "old format" adventures while keeping by my side a deck of cards with the stats for the monsters/NPCs. It's not as much flipping as it's shuffling :D I like "living" adventures, where the world reacts to the PCs (and...

Preferred Format: Ret. to the Temple of Elem. Evil or Exped. to the Ruins of Greyhawk

Wow, you just botched it with the examples :D RttToEE was a nightmare. Information dispersed and a horrible adventure :D RoG was a much better adventure, but it didn't make the best of uses from the Delve format. Let's say... Pathfinder vs. the H-series. In Pathfinder modules you have the...
