1E and 4E are similar? Really? (Forked from: 1E Resurgence?)

I've never played 1e, but I've played plenty of 2e and 4e seems to me much closer to its "spirit" than 3.x: cookie-cutter classes, oversimplified skills, PCs following different rules than the rest of the world... And that's why I prefer 3.x to 4e. So yes, being "old-school" can be bad.

    Miniatures?

I don't have market figures, but I can tell you the only money WotC has been seeing from me for a long time has come from miniatures and tiles. At least, it was so until "Dungeons of Dread" and their crappy sculptures came out. Since then, I've reverted mostly to GW minis. I haven't seen the...

    Designing a 2e Retro-Clone

See, I've never played 1e AD&D, and when I played -a lot- 2e, we never ever used any splat book, apart from campaign settings or adventures, so I still have no idea of what a kit is exactly. And the sad thing? I never liked the rules. It wasn't until 3.5 (in fact, it wasn't until Age of Worms)...

What kind of game should D&D be?--Forked Thread: When did I stop being...

Just curiosity: how is 3e a "hybrid" system? Just because you get to locate a few skill points and select a couple of feats (which are almost always related to your class)? I voted class/level, but I don't want cookie-cut characters either. So I prefer class/level with a bit of customization...

Tell me about your D&D group

Well, people come and go. I've two players who've been playing with me since '93, when we started playing RPGs. The current charter has been more or less the same since '06. Currently we're all males in our late 20s/early 30s. A teacher (I), an astronomist and 4 call center operators. As for...

My favourite published campaign setting would be...

There're, also, settings I love reading about but which I find unplayable. The two main offenders here would be Westeros and the Middle Earth. These settings have such wonderful stories carved in that I feel that the PCs don't have much to do without shattering what I like about them. It's the...

My favourite published campaign setting would be...

For D&D Fantasy, I used to run only Greyhawk, but now Golarion is my setting of choice. What I like the most about these settings is their openness and that each region is unique in some way or another, so I have a place for every story I happen to come upon without feeling restrained by an...

Psych me up for Dark Heresy

Fluffwise, it's a very unique dark-goth-punk space opera setting. And the fact that there're no real "good guys" makes it very interesting. Overall, the WH40K setting has many selling points, and a RPG based on that universe has been very expected (although someone could argue that there was...

    The Ideal RPG System?

I can't have an ideal system, just because I don't always want the same things when I'm playing or running an rpg. Sometimes I want total freedom and a bit of sillyness, making up stories and characters as we play. Then, I use Risus or Labyrinth Lord. Sometimes I want detail in the characters...

    Stupidity or Genius?

It's stupidity. Of the fun kind, but stupidity nevertheless. The vrock, as it's been said before, could just have spent one of its attacks killing you and, thanks to Cleave, still be able to full attack the rest of your party. I'd gone with the 5-feet step backwards + full defense. As for...

    Cross-gender PCs

Maybe it's because I mostly GM but, having rp'ed elder demons, genderless golems, oozes and primal deities... Well, I don't think "a girl" is too much of a challenge :P Also, one of the reasons I play RPGs is to experience the world (or "a" world, at least) from other people's eyes, so limiting...

    1E Resurgence?

I've looked back myself to pre-2E rules in search of a good pick-up game, and found it in LL/RC. I still play and run 3.x (Pathfinder these days) and love it, being my "campaign game" of choice, but I find myself using LL for one-shot games or to fill spare time, as in "Dinner was good; Wanna...

    4E Gods - Where's the crunch?

I miss one thing from AD&D2: Spheres. I thought that 3x clerics weren't different enough. I let my clerics cast any of their domain spells spontaneously, as if they were heal spells, but it wasn't enough. And 4E goes even further from that. I'm sorry, but just one feat isn't enough to say "hey...

How to detain an Eladrin Rogue? ie, teleporting

Creating special prisons is expensive. Blindfolds can be removed or tricked. The afest, cheapest way to keep an Eladrin from escaping is putting his eyes out. It's the only sensible solution. And before saying something like "a non-evil rules wouldn't be so ruthless", keep in mind that, in the...

Monster Manual: What's missing which has impacted you?

Elementals. Not the fancy new ones, but classic, old-time elementals: fire, water, air and earth. Also, animals. On the Spanish D&D e-mail list, we have this recurring joke where you really don't need any creature statted up; you just put a barlglura and change its name.
