    D&D 5E (2014) Barbarian troubles

Reasonable challenges for a high AC barbarian: npc casters - saves ignore ac; Bless/advantage granting tactics - built in game mechanics to address a +hit vs AC disadvantage; kiting/guerilla tactics - nullify rage and other pc buffs by engaging only when advantageous; non-combat based objectives...

D&D 5E (2014) Do most striker builds weaken a party?

I would be surprised if a 150' or even 80' encounter range is typical. Any urban, woodland, or underdark setting is likely to favor a < 60' typical encounter range. Desert and plains/grassland settings might allow for a longer range assuming very aggressive rules of engagement.

D&D 5E (2014) Do most striker builds weaken a party?

You are viewing defenses and hp as individual resources; but discussing tactics at a "party" level. Tactics can (and should) vary wildly based on party composition. While the ranger and warlock are leaving you and the paladin to draw aggro; you and the paladin might be removing stealth based...

    Good catch... auto-complete + multi-tasking... ;-)

    D&D 5E (2014) 5th Edition Intelligence

You are asserting a false premise. I don't need to know what a "20 Int plan" looks like. All I need to determine is if a given plan is or could be successful and what the outcome is. Similarly I don't need to know what a "6 Int plan" looks like. All I need to determine is if it is or could be...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5th Edition Intelligence

Now that you've returned to the actual topic: I'm the DM, I'm adjudicating the scenario. It's not necessary to enumerate every potential outcome, because I am deciding the outcome. Although, more typically the situation is that I know what actually happened; while the players are trying to...

    I don't need a 20... I just need to be smarter than you. ;-)

Actually, if a player of any Int is in such a situation; I often request Int checks (with any applicable proficiency) and give them information or logical insight on a level commiserate with their roll. This typically happens during player discussions/brainstorming sessions. Sorry to disappoint you.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5th Edition Intelligence

This is no different than when a charismatic player runs a character who has dumped Charisma, and tries to talk his way through everything. I find asking "Would your character really do that?" And the like often reigns in this kind of metagaming. But sometimes the occasional DC check, with...

    D&D 5E (2014) Need a safety net for 1st level characters -- it's complicated

I suggest you figure out what you are really trying to accomplish. You have a set of contradictory requirements. Gritty, but PC'S are plot immune (to death at least)? 1st or 2nd level for an extended time, but you don't want to fudge die rolls? None of this make any sense. As best I can tell...

    D&D 5E (2014) Can I attack with a two-handed weapon while wearing, but not wielding a shield?

RAW: No. RAI: No. RAF: I'd potentially allow it as the benefit from a magic (or perhaps masterwork*) shield, but not for general use. *I tend use masterwork to denote some (mundane, typically minor) benefit; i.e. single plus 1 (hit or damage, not both; situational ac bonus; etc).

    D&D 5E (2014) Beast Master Ranger Revamp

How can you use an action to command Spuds if you are incapacitated or entirely removed from the location? Surely you at least need to be able to vocalize (and he able to hear you)? I can see where the help action could be useful, but a BM companion seems to occupy more "budget", for lack of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Beast Master Ranger Revamp

Having played one; are you happy with the feel and mechanical execution of the sub-class? I have had multiple players who initially expressed interest in BM turn away due to the action sharing mechanic. Is survivability an issue (for the companion)? What about the decreased benefit of hunter's mark?

    D&D 5E (2014) Beast Master Ranger Revamp

Losing the proficiency bonus is a bad idea; it removes all scaling from the companion's attack/damage. If an adjustment in this style is necessary, it would be better to replace the companion's bonuses with the ranger's own as they scale. Mind link seems too close to beast sense, perhaps add a...

D&D 5E (2014) Refusing To Heal Party Members?

You are correct, there is no need to shore up the party's weaknesses. If they refuse to expend resources on healing, or have no such resources, that's fine. They might have to camp more often, utilize tactics that minimize incoming damage, or characters might die; all of which is also fine. The...

D&D 5E (2014) The 11th level of the Warriors Classes

The Assassin/Bard should also have a second (admittedly weaker) attack. Pure (melee) dpr would be higher as a single class rogue (trickster perhaps to remain on theme); but he should have gained a lot of casting flexibility and more spell slots. If your reading of the new SCAG Cantrips are as...

D&D 5E (2014) Can you transform a magical weapon when you summon it as a bonded pact weapon?

RAW: Could be a little clearer, the "transform into..." language obscures things a little; but I agree with PensiveToast's interpretation. RAI: Aligns with the above RAW interpretation. #IMO RAF: I would say it should be allowed; although, I would only transfer the magic properties. The base...

Unearthed Arcana Light, Dark, Underdark - November's Unearthed Arcana

Adding a ranged attack option to your monster/npc stat block is not challenging. Neither is actually attacking the tank instead of ignoring him. Nor is handwaving 10'-15' of movement or not laying out every grid with choke points. Can a character get an absurd number of attacks? Sure if you...

D&D 5E (2014) Heat Metal Rules Interp / Minor Nerf

It's not overpowered, even when used against PC's. It's decent damage for a bonus action, but requires concentration. It imposes disadvantage (for a round at a time), but with a chance to save each time. Characters with high Con, proficient in Con saves, that can generate their own source of...

D&D 5E (2014) Heat Metal Rules Interp / Minor Nerf

Clarification, the disadvantage only last one round (and only takes effect at all if the item remains in contact). The target gets a new saving throw against the disadvantage every time it takes damage from the spell. So while the target may be disadvantaged for multiple rounds, it would have to...
