    4E is unacceptable

In our play experience, combats have been about the same length as in our 3.5 games, and I expect them to get faster once there's less stopping every other round to look up new or changed rules. Much faster, in fact.

New errata posted, stealth changes official

Depends how hard it is to produce a PDF in whatever document system they're using, I suppose. It seems like a good workflow would make that easy, and the changes could basically be inserted as they're developed, and new PDFs produced in parallel with the errata-list documents. This might be a...

paladin divine challenge at the end of a turn?

That strikes me a quite strict reading.

paladin divine challenge at the end of a turn?

Yeah, that's really what the players' argument comes down to. One way to make the "don't cheat" a little more harsh but still allow some flexibility would be to say that if you choose to engage by moving towards rather than attacking, you must attack your next turn or suffer the divine...

    New Rituaaaals

It's a good test of whether Dragon material is really going to be first class / completely canon in practice.

New errata posted, stealth changes official

I e-mailed the people selling 'em to ask, and they didn't know. They did point to the "free update PDFs" I could download -- but, uh, that's the same thing we're all looking at. If real, integrated updated PDFs do happen, both soon and with an indication that it'll be done regularly, I can...

paladin divine challenge at the end of a turn?

So, we had a little uncertainty about this rule in our game group last night. Divine Challenge says: On your turn, you must engage the target you challenged or challenge a different target. To engage the target, you must either attack it or end your turn adjacent to it. If none of these events...

    Dual weilding javelins?

+1 to this. If you make the house rule specific enough ("When wielding a heavy thrown weapon, you may use Str instead of Dex for ranger powers which normally use Str for melee attacks and Dex for ranged attacks.") I can't even think of a time when it would be absurd.

D&D 4E The grindyness of 4e combat: anyone tried a solo monster yet?

Forked from: The grindyness of 4e combat: anyone tried a solo monster yet? So, flip the above on its head. If you don't have defenders, keep the monsters that hit hard to below the normal expectation. If you don't have controllers, keep the minions to a minimum. And if you don't have...

unrestricted supernal or abyssal and actual game power?

In other words, it's basically a setting thing. For my second 4E campaign, I'll probably develop a more complicated system of languages, because I (and my players, at least to some degree!) find that fun. But for now, I'm sticking roughly to the default setting — but I'm willing to bend for good...

unrestricted supernal or abyssal and actual game power?

So, am I missing something, or is the restriction on supernal and abyssal at first level (i.e., without the Linguist feat) basically a "default campaign setting" feature and not a mechanical limitation? That is, is there any particular reason these languages are actually more powerful, other...

    Dragon 366 TOC

Rituals I'm still hearing the "it's primarily a tactical minis game!" complaint a lot around here (here=irl, not enworld). The background stuff is nice (eladrin city, blah blah blah), but what's we're really missing is solid game functionality for out-of-combat character abilities. With the...

Amazon finally shipped my core gift set

I've had some things with free shipping come media-mail rate, and other times not. No idea how they decide. I'm not really in a hurry, as someone else in our group bought the core set individually, and I went to my local store day-of and bought the PH (can't hurt to have another for the group)...

Amazon finally shipped my core gift set

Got a message this morning (dated 00:55:02 PDT) confirming that my preordered core rulebooks finally shipped. I chose the free shipping, and it says they'll arrive on the 5th, but they shipped out of Springfield MA and I'll be surprised if it takes that long to get to Boston.

    Paragon Path: Arcane Archer

This fits the original class pretty well, but seems awfully powerful. My intuition is that it's the route to a lot of unexpected overpowered synergy.

Increasing damage (or reducing hit points)

It's like people who play the money-for-free-parking house rule in Monopoly, and then complain that the game lasts forever. :)

Increasing damage (or reducing hit points)

The other DM in our group and I also have this suspicion based on our little playtests, but are holding back judgement for now. It may be that when players are more familiar with what they can do, the damage is stepped up significantly. That said, encounter design needs to match the party. If...
