    D&D 4E Point buy, 4e & you.

I don't think we've played with it enough to come to that conclusion. While I think you're right that the system requires concentrating on three stats, I don't think you can discount the cost of having your other (non-primarly-stat-based) defenses be low. And, there's currently many feats with...

    A possible balance for INT

It helps to think: a) the warlord is the int-y fighter and b) one can be smart without having a high int.

Rituals take too long and creative casting is dead

This just in: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/drfe/20080605a Class Acts: Wizard By Rodney Thompson If you're in the market for more illusionist-style wizard powers, look no further.

    D&D 4E Point buy, 4e & you.

Eh. The basic ability scores play a huge factor in the game's math. I'd be very hesitant to house-rule them before understanding the game as a whole a lot better. This isn't accusing you of wrongfun, but just indicating that using non-weighted point buy may break some of the games key assumptions.

This paragraph basically should be added to the PHB as an errata.

    New Feats

This seems too vague. Can I pick "spellbook"? What does it mean to be able to "utilize" an item? Cute. I don't think I'd make this a feat, though. Rather, I'd give everyone in the party a powerful quirk along these lines. This one is clever — I like how it explores a generally undeveloped...

Strategery: 4E combat and the insecure DM

Okay, so, DM confessions time: I like to think I'm a reasonably smart person. I can do tactics to some degree. When I used to play Magic the Gathering in college, I did all right, although I'd get attached to a concept and end up losing a lot when it didn't work out to be as cool as I thought...

    D&D Insider! UP ! (merged)

Wow, looks like they've invested a lot of money into the virtual dress-up paper-doll portion of the tools. Pretty nifty if you're using the virtual game table stuff*, but my group games partly to get away from computers, so for that, my answer is pretty much no. The online rules compendium for...

All Your Lands Are Belong to Us

So (and I say this in all seriousness), that sounds cool, but as a DM I have no idea how to run that sort of thing with the tools before me in 3.5, let alone 4E. I mean, I guess it could be a whole bunch of skill challenges, but, let's face it, the core of this game is: a party gets into combat...

    D&D 4E Point buy, 4e & you.

What I like to do is: at the beginning of a campaign, everyone rolls a d10. Then, for the next two years of gaming, they get to add the resulting number as a bonus to every die roll they make.

    D&D 4E Point buy, 4e & you.

    Why not the array option, then? Based on the earlier thread, offer them one of these arrays: 17 14 14 10 10 8 16 16 13 11 10 8 16 16 12 10 10 10 16 15 14 11 10 8 and then say if they really want to have an 18 to start (really, a 20 with racial modifiers), they could pick something like: 18 14...

All Your Lands Are Belong to Us

So, what makes the "cleared" area stay cleared? Are there, like, spawn points which, once disabled, no longer spit out bad guys? (And I say that in a sarcastic sort of videogamey way, but with the right story could actually be made to work. Maybe the invasion was accomplished via a large...

So what happened to arcane and divine characters?

And that's particularly fun to do while the other player with a character which does have super-hero powers does your shtick better than you, then fireballs all the mooks and disintegrates the archnemesis. Yay roleplaying!

Keep on Shadowfell with a 7yo

We have an ongoing (low-intensity) fight in our gaming group. A couple of us love them, and others hate them with a deep, abiding passion. The latter group enjoys minis for their own sake and feels they add to immersion in the game — they're serious game objects which represent who you are. On...

    20% item resale value: impossible!

I hear that 20% resale value for used items is totally unbelievable and breaks suspension of disbelief. So that's why I no longer believe in my local gaming store: http://www.pandemoniumbooks.com/policies.php?func=used Original Book We Buy For: Price: $0.01 - $5.00 $1.00 $5.01...

Greg Bilsland on Manual of the Planes

Well, it's pretty sparse info and is really more designed as NPC starting points.

So what happened to arcane and divine characters?

I've totally downed the 4E kool-aid, but I gotta say, it's fair to say the current number of rituals (and utility powers) is underwhelming at best. And with the rest of 2008 looking kinda sparse in this area (manual of the planes will have some, but how general purpose will they be?), it's...

Does hitting a milestone need more sizzle?

I'm surprised no one else chimed in on this one. It's exactly what I'd been thinking I'll look towards if it becomes an issue in my game.

Magic Items and their resale value

Doesn't this consideration basically answer the core question? Dealers in magic items are taking a huge amount of risk.
