Default "PoL" Setting - Setting Info Compilation (Now Wikified!)

I don't think "messenger" is quite the right word. An exarch in real-world historical terms was the governor of a remote (the "ex" part) province. So they're probabkly not exactly just go-betweens carrying the words of the gods, but rather the executors of divine power in the mortal world.

D&D 4E Careful Shot vs Twin Strike....No Contest (4e spoilers)

In that case, the option available shouldn't suck.

    Background(Soldier) — I get +5 to all to-hit rolls. I win the game!

    D&D 4E Shado's 4e Color Landscape Sheets v1.2: UPDATED 6/24

There are really very nice — excellent work. The format of the weapon/powers section of the combat area seems like it could use some improvement. I suppose a fighter with a lot of weapons might have a slew of basic attacks, but most people will have at most two. And isn't it only humans who...

Identify magic effect makes no sense as written.

Some people — and I'm not naming names, but I am casting a sideways glance at rec.games.frp.dnd — believe that in 3E, the DM must model any such effects using existing spells (or new spells that fit the power level of existing spells and which PCs could learn if they discovered them) or the...

D&D 4E Obligatory dump stats in 4e: the irrelevance of Intelligence

It's particularly unreasonable when you consider classes with Int as the primary stat. Why do wizards get to be the skill monkeys for (edit: almost) free? Automatic rituals and swappable powers already make them the most interesting out-of-combat class.

    Arcane initiate, cantrip and at-will

Right, sanity-wise, not rules-wise. And, also consider that in general class features are supposed to provide specific flavor to a class that you can't just "steal" with multiclassing, so it's not merely a power-level-balance thing. But in the particular case of cantrips it seems okay to me...

    Half-Elf Ideas

This is exactly why I prefer the idea of making it instead that the Dilettante power can use Con or Cha.

    D&D 4E Preliminary 4E tweaks

Can, or must? Can the defender just stay there?

    Arcane initiate, cantrip and at-will

It sounds fine to me. Basically you're trading out an attack power for a minor utility power.

How are you going to fix half-elves?

I don't think so. The regular-leveling up rules say that at certain levels you "can replace any encounter attack power you know from your class" (emphasis added) — which the Dilettante power wouldn't be. And the power retraining rules specifically say that you swap a power for one of equal or...

D&D 4E Careful Shot vs Twin Strike....No Contest (4e spoilers)

This is the strangest part to me (along with the fact that twin strike surely must have been tested at the 3.5 base of -2 to-hit). Assuming the playtesters and developers didn't just accidentally get a bad batch of mushrooms, they can do this math as well as we can, and they seem to have...

D&D 4E Careful Shot vs Twin Strike....No Contest (4e spoilers)

That's always a questionable way to balance things, and I hope we see less of this in 4E. ("I know this option really sucks and basically eats up a feat slot for nothing, but haha, you have to take it so you can be cool later.")

D&D 4E Careful Shot vs Twin Strike....No Contest (4e spoilers)

I don't like adding back the damage bonus to Careful Attack because it sort of negates the intended meaning of the power. Putting it to +4 seems like a better choice.

D&D 4E Careful Shot vs Twin Strike....No Contest (4e spoilers)

It basically means that Rapid Shot is covered by the same power, and since you get so few, it makes sense to double 'em up.

    Fixing the Cleric

I really can't judge the power properly until I've actually played the game for at least a few months. I just mean that I'd really like to see 11 (or 19 or 20, depending on if this is for NPCs too) really unique feats, not one that works basically the same for different gods. Because conserving...

Racial stat bonuses and system balance

Well, for one thing, they wouldn't really be racial bonuses anymore, would they? I suggest simply giving higher point buy, if that's what you want. This can have a huge impact in 3E, and since ability boosting items and spells are out, it'll be even more so in 4E. It'll mean the players can...

How are you going to fix half-elves?

I'm thinking of leaving the +2 modifier on Con, but making the dilettante power have an additional advantage: that power, you can use your Con where Dex or Str would normally be used, and you can use your Cha where Int or Wis would normally be used. One of the primary problems I see with the...

D&D 4E Careful Shot vs Twin Strike....No Contest (4e spoilers)

and so, what then? Do you think twin strike is too good, or careful shot always awful, or some combination of the above? Would making careful shot be +3 or +4 fix the problem, or does twin strike really need a penalty?
  20. mattdm

    Worst Race?

Hmmm. What about some mechanism by which the half-elf gets a boost to to-hit with the dilettante power? (Maybe by allowing it to use Cha even if it's not normally a Cha-based power?)
