    Digital Insider #13

Exactly. Current issues are very valuable. Back issues should be candy to help induce people to subscribe. Now, with the option to subscribe just for a month at a time, the risk is somewhat stronger. A compromise would be to keep all issues online for full-year subscribers and only show the...

Not letting the players know how much experience they have

I like XP When I play, I want to kill monsters and take their gold, magic items, and precious, precious XP. I want to have a nice role-playing-filled story to go along with it, but if I wanted to get away from XP, I'd get away from D&D.

Second this. Excellent book for other reasons too.

    Discussing 4e Subsystems: Feats

I think the main problem is that the standard array isn't that great compared to several other point buy options. It does seem like weapon focus doesn't need to be there. It's a very dull feat with a lot of power.

    Permanent Linked Portal?

I'm sure we'll see something official about this eventually — probably DMG 2. In the meantime, how difficult do you want this to be for your players in your campaign?

    Ability Score Blues

Yeah, this. After playing for a while, I'm convinced that some of the more balanced point buy arrays we were throwing around a few months ago are still great choices in most cases. If you don't have racial bonus in your primary stat, 17 14 14 10 10 8 is a pretty good value — the 17 goes up to...

    4e e3?

Another thing of note: especially at level 1 and level 2, you're going to run into this problem — it's hard to get a wide variety of balanced encounters without a selection of monsters which are lower level than the party.

    4E encounter spells for AD&D

There's a Recharge Magic mechanic for 3.5E outlined in Unearthed Arcana (the 3.5E version). You may be able to take some ideas from there.

    D&D 4E Some Thoughts on 4e

(Re: potential house rule doubling number of utility powers a character gets) There'd have to be some sort of mechanism in place to keep the combat power from going up, of course. Perhaps make the additional ones work like Channel Divinity (or like 3E spontaneous-caster slots), where you have...

Having trouble finding low level encounters

Monster Manual II could help to address this by including 0th-level monsters.

    4e e3?

One downside is that low-level characters don't have as many different options in each encounter, which could a) make things get a bit boring and b) tend towards shorter adventuring days then necessary. If I were going to restrict the game to three levels, I would consider giving out more powers...

    What did you buy?

I think it's better than what was promised. If I wanted to play Neverwinter Nights, well, I've got that already. I have no interest in running Microsoft Windows just to get some heavy-on-the-eye-candy game tools, and in fact have little interest in playing D&D via computer even if it were...

    Healing Font

Hmmm, works for me with my keyboard — no special fonts, no graphics: ×, ×, ×. Maybe it's time for you to get a new operating system. :) But I agree this is likely the reason for the [ts] code.

    Insubstantial Monsters Hit Points

Which is to say, from a player's point of view (especially considering HP as a measure of morale and combat-readiness in addition to pure physical health/injury), insubstantial is exactly the same as not-insubstantial. Of course, insubstantial creatures also usually have phasing, but...

Dragon 368 - Death Matters (But Never Happens)

I think the above is the core of the problem. My players haven't felt like healing surges are an infinite resource at all. You need to do something to make them equally precious to your players. If you feel like you're not able to do it with encounter design or by encouraging an extended...

D&D 4E How does the 4E Barbarian Rage ability work?

Best suggestion I've seen! Hope someone from WotC is reading this. It's particularly nice because the at-wills are already worded this way, so adding it to the daily powers doesn't really add any new complication.

D&D 4E How does the 4E Barbarian Rage ability work?

Well, honestly, I think moving around a chunk of text fixes half the problem — Rage Strike looks more important than it is.

    D&D 4E Some Thoughts on 4e

Yes. Make sure you have the Ritually Speaking article from Dragon (and e-mail customer service asking for more articles like it). I've considered a house rule to double the number of utility powers everyone gets.

    Profession/Craft Skills

I don't think charging a feat is a good idea. You're giving a mechanical drawback (usually a combat drawback) as a penalty for adding role-playing flavor to a character. These things should come out of different pools — and since it's unlikely to upset balance, might as well make the "soft"...
