Begging to be errata'd: Archer Ranger At-Wills

Yeah. The math seems so straightforward on this that I can't believe something hasn't been done. As pointed out in many of the other threads, making careful strike do more damage is another option, but either way, it really needs something — especially given the stated "it's not a card game, so...

Converting gestalt to 4e - possible?

If you're throwing twice the monsters at the players, they're going to need more actions. In fact, I'd suggest following the suggestions in the DMG for converting a monster to solo and basically do the same things: add the template as you suggest, give a bonus to saves, more action points, and...

How bad is the paladin going to be without armor in combat?

My current game has a castaways-on-a-desert-island theme, and for the first few sessions the entire party has been either without equipment at all or vastly underequipped. I haven't toned down the fights in particular to take this into account, and haven't killed any of the party yet. This is...

Converting gestalt to 4e - possible?

I think the Gestalt idea in general would work fine in 4E, because it has the same balancing factor: economy of actions. You may have twice as many powers, but you still can't do twice as much in a round. And of course there's the multiple-attribute issue, although most gestalt games use a...

    miniature minis?

Indoor maps are no problem; it's when I want to have interesting outdoor areas I run into trouble. Also, I have what I think will be an iconic reoccurring location in a game at a castle complex on a mountain. The real-world location this is based on would be about 90 by 40 squares for the...

    miniature minis?

With 4E, I'm often feeling a bit constrained in the size of our maps -- we've got about a 3'×4' space (maybe up to 5') for our board, and often I feel like we need more area. I'm dimly aware of smaller-scale minis used in wargaming — is there a good source of cheap, prepainted, fantasy-themed...

whole-class retraining: bringing the conversion experience to multiclassing

Sure, an in-game ritual like that could serve as the "conversion experience" I describe. However, making the ritual have a significant component cost would defeat the point, as would 3.5E's 5000 XP charge (not to mention the "greater effects ~ partial/undesirable results" clause).

    Player Etiquette: Changing Class

If you're interested in preserving some continuity, you might want to talk with your DM about doing it this way: Whole-class retraining: bringing the conversion experience to multiclassing

    The Miniatures and Editions Connection

This poll might be more interesting if we could choose the way we historically played each game — for example, I always played 3E with minis, and never did with AD&D. And 4E is minis all the way.

Is a +3 good enough to hit stuff?

I played in a game where the DM went out of his way to only give us powerful magic items which didn't fit with our character classes. (Why would the NPC bad guy have one of those? You're the only high-level druid for miles.) And we didn't have the downtime to make things, and the stores of...

    Rain of Blows

So basically it's another example of options 4E gives you if you don't narrowly focus your character around one stat.

What D&D is to me, in terms of editions.

Yeah, I can definitely see that. As a DM, I've always disliked the Great Wheel and felt everything in the rules that assume its existence to be an impediment to building my own cosmology. So, I don't personally miss it, but it's definitely a huge change to the feel.

Characters of War up at Wizards

Yeah, that one struck me as Teh Awesome, basically must-have for any controller or ranged striker.

Am I the only person who likes Paragon Multi classing?

We haven't gotten to Paragon Tier yet, but I'm leaning strongly towards making a feat called "Paragon Multiclassing" which gives you all of the benefits of the existing Paragon Multiclassing option when you hit the appropriate levels — but just costs the feat slot instead of trading out your...

    Do conditions stack?

Condition cards (handed out by the DM) are great for this. You don't have to remember "dazed twice, once from this and once from that" — you just know you're dazed and you've got two cards that say so to get rid of.

A complete "random" world. Forked Thread: On the Value of Uncertainty

As a player, I like to at least have the illusion that there's some point to it all. Otherwise, I'd be better off playing a randomly-generated dungeon-crawl computer game.

    Encounters Per Day

I hope I can make a 3.5-comparison comment without derailing the thread.... I was just noticing the same thing in my game, which currently isn't really planned to give the PCs downtime between days, let alone between adventures. This means that at 4-5 encounters per day, and 8-10 encounters per...

Weapon Balance - A Statistical Analysis

As I mentioned above, 2d4 is very different from a theoretical 1d9 — it has the property of being more consistent. 5 is the average damage, but you'll get 4, 5, or 6 almost ⅔ of the time. This gives the weapon a different feel in play than the "swingy" big dice.

Note to Self - Do NOT use an 'All Soldiers' encounter again....

Or, surrender, or try to run away. There's nothing my players seem to love more than killin' my bad guys when they try to run away. (They're not bloodthirsty per se: they just want the loot. "We're lawful good! Honest!")
