    Long Jump questions

Sounds good to me. Anyone can ready an attack to smack him when he lands, which also seems appropriate.

Weapon Balance - A Statistical Analysis

I think it's actually most useful to use the military weapons as a baseline for comparing simple weapons. So, one just uses the constants given above. By that metric (rounded slightly for ease of grouping): * Quarterstaff is at the bottom of the barrel at ~ -2.5. * Club, sickle, greatclub, and...

    Insubstantial seems very, very boring

A good point, although I can't see the players noticing much — even if I do have an NPC healing my insubstantial monsters with a power which works this way, the PCs aren't going to be impressed much by "and it heals by the equivalent of a couple more hit points more than you would have...

Is a +3 good enough to hit stuff?

Or for the other advantages you might be able to get from feats you can access because you have more spread-out ability scores?

    Vision and Light Question

The idea that light sources project a perfect square of even light which stops exactly at its border is an abstraction to reduce the need to fumble about with sines and cosines in combat. Take it as: for the purposes of resolving combat, your torch is making this area bright enough to fight in...

    Insubstantial seems very, very boring

Alright, again, one of us is missing something. Phasing isn't a mechanic of insubstantial — it's a separate quality that insubstantial creatures are often given. And I continue to agree that phasing is cool.

Life and Death Consequences (Forked: On the Value of Uncertainty)

While I don't make "with PC approval" explicit, I don't want it to be "A random table says rocks fall from the sky and you die", either. Most of what happens in the game should be driven in reaction to player actions; randomization is a way to model the results on a small scale adding up...

Kruthik Hivemind: What were they thinking?

There's an easy solution here: tie final battle resolution to a quest completion, which means it's worth the XP of two encounters — double XP for your boss.

Your party must have a cleric or a warlord. :)

    Insubstantial seems very, very boring

So, yeah — my plan is to actually leave the ½ damage thing as-is, but add that untyped damage has no effect at all. Taking radiant damage (for ghosts, wraiths, and the like — other types of insubstantial creatures may be different) would allow normal weapons to also work for one round. This...

    Insubstantial seems very, very boring

Necrotic is actually one of the easier ones, at least for ghost-like beings — the shadow substance meshes with the insubstantial form, temporarily giving it solidity. At just that moment, your ally strikes....

    Insubstantial seems very, very boring

Awesome — I like this one in combination with making them impossible to hit with normal (untyped) damage. Makes it a "take something / give something" house rule rather than just making them more powerful, and I like the party-cooperation effect. I'll probably make it radiant damage which works...

    Insubstantial seems very, very boring

I realize that most creatures which are insubstantial also have phasing, and you're right, phasing isn't boring. But what's the difference between a solid creature with phasing and a creature with phasing which is insubstantial? That's a rhetorical question, because the answer is pretty...

    Insubstantial seems very, very boring

*blink* Right, otherwise they'd have to be higher level. But that just emphasizes the boringness — since insubstantial has no effect except for making it seem like they have more hit points, except they have fewer hit points to match, it's literally meaningless. I must be missing something...

    Insubstantial seems very, very boring

Hey, uh, if you're playing in my game this is kind of a spoiler so please stay out — thanks! Is there some way in which taking half damage from all sources is different from just doubling hit points? I mean, I understand it's useful as written for PCs that can use powers or items to become...

How not to be a core class?

I dunno, man. I think pretty much any 3.xE rogue would be much better off taking another level of rogue for more sneak attack and the various nice class abilities (and no impediment to BAB), and then investing in Use Magic Device and a stash of scrolls and wands.

D&D 4E 4E multiclassing - is Arcane Initiate too powerful?

Yes, you're missing that they could take Skill Training and do the same thing. Or Initiate of the Faith, or Soldier of the Faith, or Pact Initiate. Basically, ritual magic is open to any hero who wants to spend the effort for the training.

    Readied charge interrupts a charge...

Okay, so how about this one: the target has an interrupt ability to magically swap places via teleportation with an ally, and triggers that right at the end of the charge. Would you really say "nope, sorry, now your target is invalid because that's not the guy you declared you were charging at"...
