    D&D 5E (2014) "Fixing" assassinate.

I don't think it needs a huge buff. I just cleaned up the wording to get rid of the weird and feelbad situation where you get surprise but lose initiative. Surprise should trump the initiative roll, IMO, it just makes more sense. you have advantage on attack rolls against any creature that...

WTF is "cold iron", and why's it so special?

This is an impressive display of religious erudition, but if you think I was claiming (a year and a half ago...) that the attitude of the Catholic Church is the only reason to infer the belief is pre-Christian, then I'm afraid you need to read the first sentence of the paragraph you quoted again.

D&D 5E (2014) Dramatic character changes and retraining

I've got no problem swapping character options. Just a few sessions ago one of my players changed his barbarian from a berserker to a survivor (homebrew subclass) because he never ever used the berserk ability. But full mechanical rebuilds kind of rub me the wrong way. I feel like there should...

D&D 5E (2014) How should 5th edition introduce the remaining classic settings?

WotC hasn't shown much interest in updating the TSR-era settings, probably precisely because the newer generation of players has no connection to them. They want to release "live" settings that players already want to play in like Ravnica and Wildemount. So the short answer is that I don't...

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassins, Alignment, and Archetypes

My worry is you're ending up with a class that does the same process within a turn every turn: shroud, strike, back off. Think about casters. They can't cast their most powerful spell every round. They have to pick their moment. Whether that means they aren't doing their "cool thing" in other...

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassins, Alignment, and Archetypes

Unless I'm reading it wrong, the assassin gets all that on the next turn anyway, so not invoking on the first turn is just passing on a free(ish) 1d10 damage. I don't see any incentive not to invoke whenever you hit.

    Why wouldn't the assassin invoke?

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassins, Alignment, and Archetypes

Yeah, one of my general critiques of the class is that it could stand to trim down on the features. But note how, for instance, One Step Ahead conceptually combines Shroud, Lethal, Blood in the Cut, Riposte, and Shadow Move into a single moving part that sells a distinctive narrative and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassins, Alignment, and Archetypes

I'm increasingly worried that the shroud system doesn't tell the story you want it to. If the assassin is the guy who formulates and executes precise plans, a trickle of "free" damage resource at the start of each turn seems contrary to that -- it looks more like a battlemaster or monk with a...

    I'm not seeing an attachment..?

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassins, Alignment, and Archetypes

To be fair, this class is already set up to be the king of cleanup, what with the name "executioner" and the Lethal feature. You can restrict it to after a hit and still make it a bonus action.

    D&D 5E (2014) Using Languages like Tools

I do the "language proficiency implies cultural proficiency" thing in my campaign, but you may be overthinking it. You, as DM, know that the PC who learned (say) Giant learned it from ogres, and can easily rule that the cultural knowledge implied does not include storm giant dinner table...

D&D General Lamest D&D classes all time

Dimension 20's Unsleeping City campaign features a sewer-dwelling rat druid in New York City. He does not lack for things to do.

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassins, Alignment, and Archetypes

But if they're just bonus actions or reactions, the mechanics are already in place. A rogue who gets a new bonus action option doesn't need to have it spelled out that this is an addition to the Cunning Action feature. (Although I concede that the thief does do this.) Oh, another alternative...

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassins, Alignment, and Archetypes

That's partly why my Shadow Dash suggestion was a reaction that only had one option and triggered on hitting with an attack. A burst of speed specifically when you draw blood is pretty distinct from the rogue's more modest but reliable menu of options. Does the base assassin need the same sort...

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassins, Alignment, and Archetypes

Yeah, that was sort of my thought. You can get around the intuition that this should be an action (like Hunter's Mark and Hex are) by tying it directly to another action: "When you take the Attack or Hide action, you can place a shroud on a creature you attacked or a creature you are hidden...

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassins, Alignment, and Archetypes

Of course being new doesn't make it bad, but I don't see any reason to modify the action economy here -- the existing reaction rules parsimoniously achieve what we want. If you're truly averse to using them, I would make placing a shroud an at-the-beginning-of-your-turn nonaction and shadow...

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassins, Alignment, and Archetypes

I was referring to the difficult terrain/climbing option; there is no intimidate option in the version of the feature I read. You appear to have moved that up to Inevitability of Death. And I think I forgot to mention it in the first pass, but I'd prune that too. It's effectively a completely...

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassins, Alignment, and Archetypes

Brainstorm for simplifying and harmonizing Shadow Action and Deadly Party: Shadow Dash When you hit a creature with a melee attack, you can use your reaction to move your speed and then attempt to hide. You can ignore difficult terrain and climb at your regular speed for this movement. Deadly...

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassins, Alignment, and Archetypes

Okay, I think I see better what you're going for now. I've got a few mechanical/clarification critiques: You mentioned earlier that you want shrouds to be on a single target at a time, but I don't see that limitation anywhere in the ability. Have you changed your mind on that? One with Shadows...
