    D&D 5E (2014) Assassins, Alignment, and Archetypes

With respect, if you outlined your basic design goals, I did not understand them. Could you clarify? Put it this way: what might the introductory fluff paragraph for the assassin base class say that an intro for the rogue would not say?

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassins, Alignment, and Archetypes

I don't think you've answered the question of how these relate to the rogue class/why not give these archetypes to the rogue. Before getting to archetypes and mechanics, what conceptually differentiates a base assassin from a base rogue? I have an answer, and an assassin class, of my own, but...

D&D 5E (2014) Divine Soul is Kinda Nasty

I believe the import of that statement is that she can cast the spell, rest, and then have the spell up through the next day along with the spell slot. My houserule for this sort of thing has long been "If the spell is still active, the spell slot does not refresh", although it is more often...

Keep reading the thread, smart guy.

D&D 5E (2014) On whether sorcerers and wizards should be merged or not, (they shouldn't)

Is it by any chance possible to have this conversation about a fun game of make-believe without allusions to domestic violence?

D&D 5E (2014) Reworking Spell Lists (Reducing "Sameyness")

It's in the DMG. There was nothing vague about it. Every spellcasting class in 3E, from the ones in the PHB to the myriad prestige classes in every splatbook, clearly indicated if it was an arcane or divine caster. 4E made some innovations, sure. It spun Primal off from Divine, and it made...

D&D 5E (2014) Reworking Spell Lists (Reducing "Sameyness")

They hadn't just been "implied". They were real categories with real rules effects -- I daresay more than in 4E. To take just one example, a 3E talisman of the sphere cares if you're an "arcane spellcaster"; a 4E talisman doesn't. Don't.

D&D 5E (2014) Reworking Spell Lists (Reducing "Sameyness")

It'd have to be single target. Light source, but with a smaller illumination radius than light. It could still light up invisible things, but maybe you have to throw it at them with a spell attack.

D&D 5E (2014) Reworking Spell Lists (Reducing "Sameyness")

Um... 4E? I've got a stack of older books with titles like Complete Arcane and Complete Divine that your hypothesis has trouble explaining. And as far as mechanical implementation of this concept goes, the idea on this thread sounds a heck of a lot more like PF2 (where sources actually matter...

    D&D 5E (2014) Ranger on a Warlock frame?

You literally just pop out the spell slot table and use a halved version of the warlock's slots and slot levels. Paladin can smite at max level twice every encounter but can't go supernova the same way. It works.

    D&D 5E (2014) Mythological Figures: Captain Nemo

Really didn't do justice to Nemo, though. Was there any part of reading Twenty Thousand Leagues where you were like, "This guy seems like he might be a literal Thug"? No? Me neither.

    D&D 5E (2014) Mythological Figures: Captain Nemo

This is fascinating. I knew about the editorial change from Polish to Indian nationality, of course, but I hadn't seen those letters where Verne defends Nemo's actions. In that light, I'd like to ask him what the final few chapters of the book mean to him.

    D&D 5E (2014) Ranger on a Warlock frame?

It's here, but I'm not really happy with that iteration any more. Plus the forum formatting appears to have gone a little wonky in the intervening years.

D&D 5E (2014) On whether sorcerers and wizards should be merged or not, (they shouldn't)

The Dresdenverse wizard is more like a sorcerer prestige class. It builds on the same power. Everything Dresden does with his spellbooks and rituals is to focus his internal magical ability. There are at least three different kinds of warlock, at least one of which works the same way: the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Ranger on a Warlock frame?

I had a system of "wildcraft" that built on the "Activity While Traveling" rules tucked away on pp. 182-3 of the PHB, adding a bunch of options to the list of activities (and also letting the ranger perform two activities at once). "As a travel activity, you can collect materials for a healing...

D&D 5E (2014) On whether sorcerers and wizards should be merged or not, (they shouldn't)

I'm with this. Metamagic is a pretty malleable mechanic. If the editorial edict came down that metamagic ought to be a wizard class feature, I could justify it as engineer-like tinkering. If the editorial edict came down that it ought to be a sorcerer class feature, I could justify it as...

D&D 5E (2014) On whether sorcerers and wizards should be merged or not, (they shouldn't)

In the Potter/Yennifer model, yes, the process of getting an internal power that can do anything to do exactly what you want it to is enormously complicated, and you'd be well advised to work from your notes. This isn't the only way to represent internal magic, of course, nor is it adequate for...

D&D 5E (2014) On whether sorcerers and wizards should be merged or not, (they shouldn't)

In the aforementioned literature, it's usually more like "I was born magical, as a child I was responsible for all sorts of crazy magical occurrences, I just had to study hard to figure out how to do those things on command without being a danger to myself or others."
