D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

We did. There were. Remember Thaco the clown?

D&D General Alternate Stats for Initiative [+]

In my 5e games, martial characters gain access to mini-feats, like Warlock invocations, that give them a permanent boost. While some are common to all martial classes, some of them are exclusives . Fighters, Monks and Rangers get access to one that allows them to make a Perception check in the...

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

I prefer the 2024 DMG formulation, precisely because it emphasizes that D&D is a social activity, and your players have a say.

    D&D 5E (2024) Web: Power Overwhelming

Actually, most Large and even Huge creatures ARE likely to get stuck in a web. Take a 9th level wizard whose party is facing 2 frost giants. Let’s assume the wizard started with a 16 Int and used one of his ASIs to increase his Int. His spell DC is 16. He casts Web, catching one of the frost...

    D&D 5E (2024) DMG 5.5 - the return of bespoke magical items?

Why should it have to be acceptable to you? You’re not one of my players.

    D&D 5E (2024) DMG 5.5 - the return of bespoke magical items?

But even if you have time skips and downtime, the characters aren’t spending that time crafting. You said it yourself: they have families, they have things to do. They are meeting their lieges and vassals, they are supervising construction of their keeps, they are building trade routes. Or...

    D&D 5E (2024) DMG 5.5 - the return of bespoke magical items?

So during the entire campaign, the PCs have a single 60-day downtime period. This seems reasonable, and actually bolsters @EzekielRaiden ’s point, that (i) multiple periods of unlimited downtime are rare; and (ii) it’s pretty easy for the DM to interrupt players taking multiple periods of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Reducing Power Gaming

If the problem is… then no, switching to PF2 doesn’t fix anything. Edit. Note, I’m not disagreeing with your original point.

    D&D General Greyhawk Humanocentricism?

I’m not sure it does. I like Ed Sheeran. I like his songs. I would think it was extremely cool if, in the middle of a concert, he sang a Taylor Swift cover. This has intellectual property considerations, but it would definitely be awesome. Likewise, a warforged in Ravenloft would be pretty...

D&D General JMISBEST's questions. Most of them about campaign ideas that either he or A GM he knows has and wants to know what people think

The scene you described has nothing to do with the party, period. That’s a problem. The party isn’t even a viewpoint character, Hermione is. You're not providing background, you’re deluging the characters with a 15 minute monologue that includes information the characters couldn’t possibly...

    D&D General Greyhawk Humanocentricism?

Unfortunately, I think it is no longer on print. I tried to get it for my son and the cost was prohibitive.

D&D General JMISBEST's questions. Most of them about campaign ideas that either he or A GM he knows has and wants to know what people think

I wouldn’t play in it. The DM doesn’t seem to have any respect for players’ agency.

D&D 5E (2024) DMG and Pf2e GM Core... Same design philosophy?

If so, I hope they start with wilderness and urban before branching off into planar adventures. 100% of the campaigns I have played in involved wilderness or urban exploring. 1 has involved the planes.

D&D 5E (2024) DMG and Pf2e GM Core... Same design philosophy?

These seems like a fairly far-fetched conclusion to draw from extremely thin evidence. 1. Maybe the writers don’t consider that pre-made world-building tables and random encounter tables are particularly useful to encouraging world—building; 2. Maybe the writers, as has been suggested...

D&D General Harshest House Rule (in use)?

Well, you know what they say, it is better for 10 innocent people to be punished, than one guilty person to go free.

D&D 5E (2024) Do players really want balance?

I just don’t think you can credibly claim that the other factors are independent of design choices. There is a lot of social media supporting 5e, but that because 5e’s fairly streamlined design supports Let’s Plays more than 3e, 4e and PF2. Matt Mercer is on record stating that Crit Role...

D&D 5E (2014) Give me ideas for a really simple boost to martial characters [2014]

I’ve incorporated a couple: Martial characters increase the die size of the weapons they use by one size; Martial characters get expertise in one skill (Athletics or History for Fighters, Athletics or Nature for Barbarians, Religion or Insight for Monks). Proficiency in one additional saving throw.

D&D 5E (2024) Do players really want balance?

I made a ton of decisions when I’m “in game mode” that are normally outside the character’s hands. My barbarian decides that “this fight” he’s going to rage. The battlemaster decides that “this turn” the monster is going to provide an opening to use battlemaster maneuvers. I decide that NOW...

D&D 5E (2024) Do players really want balance?

Your conclusion is flawed. Not all DMs are a monolith. Nor are all players. Some DMs are even players, and vice-versa. It is incorrect to suggest that changes to the game will be unpopular if they favour players, and popular if they favour DMs.

D&D 5E (2024) Do players really want balance?

Is this where we start ranting about “kids these days”? I tell you, I was babysitting my 18-month old nephew and he had no concept of object permanence!
