The specific criticism that was made was that there is a history of people, including WotC, treating grognards poorly. When pressed for examples of WotC treating grognards poorly (an extraordinary claim as the 5e designers are grognards themselves), only two examples were given: THAC0 the...

Fortunately, modern D&D does not use XP for GP as a mechanic. The point I’m making is that the people claiming « modern D&D doesn’t cater to all playstyles » are conveniently forgetting that neither did older D&D.

You disagreed with @Hussar ’s statement that a group of gamers felt aggrieved because the character THAC0 the clown in « Beyond the Witchlight » and requested a citation. @Hussar was probably referring to Mournblade’s post at 757, which I will not cite because he was booted from the thread for...

Meanwhile, I dislike the mechanic because most of the PCs I play with aren’t motivated by greed, so I don’t like how it incentivizes them to be greedy even in cases where they wouldn’t be otherwise.

That just isn’t the case. The thread in the enworld forum wasn’t prompted by anything. https://www.enworld.org/threads/thaco-the-angry-clown-really.683142/ In this thread, THAC0 the clown was brought up by @Micah Sweet who was definitely not using it as an insult. More generally, in order to...

That’s where you’re wrong. A lot of the changes are proposed by and cheered on by, people who have been in the game since the ‘80s. Your acting like the game in the 80s was a monolith. In support of that framing, you are making unsupported claims like « no one had a problem with THAC0 » even...

Exactly. More players in the TTRPG space means more players that branch out. There are a ton of RPGs out there that simply wouldn’t exist of the market hadn’t grown 10-fold since 2014.

I would go even further. It’s not really a faux-European medieval ascetic, it’s a faux-British medieval ascetic. Southern Europe has always been focussed on trade across the Mediterranean, so North Africans, Turks, Egyptians, Ethiopians or even Arabs wouldn’t be out of place in medieval...

D&D General What Bits of History Inspire Your Homebrew Setting?

I’ve been reading « Des capes et des crocs » and it has inspired me to set a campaign around the Mediterranean. You get multiple powers jockeying for influence, an important shipping lane, and a wide variety of cultures that would be historically appropriate.

The skit in question. BTW, I agree with you. As a fan of gnomes, I don’t see anything that could be considered objectionable.

But so far, no one has indicated that they felt mocked or insulted by « I’m a monster, Rawr! ». You simply included it as an example of something that someone could hypothetically get insulted by. It’s not even clear HOW someone could get insulted by that comment.

Actually, we thought it was funny. I mean, we would have preferred that gnomes were included in PHB, but the character was endearing.

That was a joke by the designers of 4e at their own expense: pointing out that according to the logic of the 4e PHB, gnomes were monsters rather than player characters (which was remedied when the 4e PHB 2 came out).

Not sure I understand. Quite often, it takes a lot of time for all the properties to be sold off because there are always some properties no one lands off. The only way to inject money in the game is completing turns of the board (or less consistently, Chance and Community Chest cards). Until...

We’ve never played with the Free Parking houserule and we’ve always auctioned off properties when someone lands on them and it is STILL not a « quick and breezy game ».

Well, 4th edition is in an honourable 3rd place within spitting distance of 2nd.

As this site tends to skew to older gamers (those who started pre-4th edition) I suspect pre-5th edition results are overrepresented compared to the wild.

« It’s the best of the options offered » is a defensible position.
