D&D General Which edition handled alignment best?

Clerics, paladins, bards, barbarians and monks aside. So just around 40% of the classes aside.

D&D 5E (2014) What is the Deal with the Twilight Cleric?

The question is: 1. In a party that may have 4, 5 or 6 players, how much time and effort should a DM spend to address problems caused by the mechanics of ONE character? and 2. To what extent does addressing the problems created by the Twilight cleric cause different problems? Better hope the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Am I missing something on 2014 rogue?

Across all the 5e campaigns I have DMed, I have had something like 5 rogues and 2 fighters. Without fail, the rogues have strongly enjoyed their characters and felt they were contributing across all 3 pillars. The 2 fighters ended the game disappointed with their characters, despite my using...

    D&D 5E (2024) Fireball is a C Tier Spell

How realistic is characters or monsters walking 20’ away from each other? How are they communicating? Just yelling at each other? How safe is that from an enemy that just picks off the last creature in the line?

D&D General Do you play in person or online?

Both. One group is spread out over 4 cities and about 5,000 miles, so it is online. The other two are in person. Each has its advantages. I woyld not want to drop a long-time group just because the players are far away.

I wish I could like this more than once.

D&D General Why Combat is a Fail State - Blog and Thoughts

Fair. I would say that certain typical OSR even make a selling point about killing characters. Both DCC and its boosters tend to trumpet « the character funnel » and the fact that many PCs will die so don’t bother to get attached.

D&D General Why grognards still matter

Why do you assume you speak for all grognards?

Also, the Abyss and the Internet. Coincidence?

D&D General Why grognards still matter

You are kind of illustrating @Chaosmancer ‘s point here: “want new settings” is different from “have no problem with WotC bringing back Nentir Vale”. If WotC brought back Nentir Vale for 5.5, would you even buy it? How many 5e settings have you bought?

D&D General Why grognards still matter

I gave up on TFA because it felt too much like a remake of A New Hope. It really made me reevaluate a Phantom Menace more positively, since Lucas tried to do something new with that film, even if he didn’t always succeed. Duel of the Fates was awesome.

D&D General Why grognards still matter

Which is why the OP’s post is critically flawed. They took an exceeding broad definition of grognard to justify their argument that their marketing power was non-negligeable, but the broader definition also meant that the members don’t agree what, if anything, is wrong in the current edition.

D&D General Why grognards still matter

That wasn’t your claim. Your claim was that criticism of TLJ was “backfill” i.e. that criticism of the movie was because of racism and nostalgia. It wasn’t. It was a bad movie. The fact that racists and people obsessed with nostalgia also hated it doesn’t make it not a bad movie. And yes...

I actually liked both those movies. But TLJ is still terrible.

D&D General Why grognards still matter

Never heard anyone complaining about that scene and I don’t even understand what was tge problem with it now. Nope. Never cared or read about EU canon, and TLJ was still a bad movie (so was the Force Awakens for different reasons). If the principle conceit of your movie is that the Resistance...

D&D General Why grognards still matter

I think the original post is fundamentally flawed. Basically, it takes an expansive definition of the term grognard (“Did you start playing 3.0 or earlier? Then you might be a grognard! Call our hotline to find out!”). But it fails on the second branch of what constitutes a demographic: does...

D&D General Why grognards still matter

I don’t think the Pareto principle applies here. As someone else pointed out, WorC doesn’t produce enough different types of books for 10% of customers to provide 90% of profit.

D&D General Why grognards still matter

Citation needed for WotC completely disregarding grognards, particularly given detailed sections in the new DMG concerning Greyhawk.

D&D General Why grognards still matter

Was the problem that Rian Johnson made changes to things, or that he was a piss-poor storyteller? Because I heard a lot more complaints about inconsistencies between movies (and within movies) than the actions of a random stablehand.

D&D 5E (2024) Favourite quirky detail from the new Monster Manual

I like the new sphinx designs, with a progression from Sphinx of Wonder all the way to Sphinx of Valor.
