ICv2 Reports Disappointing Year For Hobby Games Channel: TTRPGs Down, D&D Declines 30%

I'm almost 50 and more or less gave up on RPGs in 2021, but this year mostly started picking it up again and moving towards games with less focus on character builds that are very recognizably D&D. The problem is mostly getting games together. I like Shadowdark, Dungeon Crawl Classics, and OSE.

Doppel Is A Physical Digital Miniature!

If I were running around playing different characters week to week, I could see it, but as someone running a game, I'd need many of them. Maybe something eink and bluetooth would make sense? I dunno.

D&D General The Double-Edged Sword: Is The New D&D Edition a Cash Grab in Disguise?

Of note, at some point I picked up the three core books on D&D Beyond. I don't have any direct plans to play 5e again, but they're there if something comes up. Has WotC announced any plans of what they're doing about the core books there, or do the new versions of the classes come at a cost?

OSR I never should have picked up Old School Essentials…

Quite honestly the thing I like most from modern D&D is that it's core mechanic is simply to roll a d20 (could use any die, but the other math changes) and try and hit a target number. I think some retroclone changed the saves to all be DC20 with a bonus equal to 20 - the B/X save value. It...

D&D General The Double-Edged Sword: Is The New D&D Edition a Cash Grab in Disguise?

A refresh is welcome. It doesn't appear that they've gone and broken the math this time. I honestly wish they'd also support the OD&D BD&D AD&D math as well. I honestly wish that I know what the RPG player share was between the grouping of OSR (pre-3), 3e, and 5e. I feel like 4e is pretty...

OSR I never should have picked up Old School Essentials…

I have to say positive things about the layout, but to give Labyrinth Lord some credit, it makes some nice rules adjustments. When I make time for it, I'll do a bit of stare and compare. I'm at least planning to copy out the cleric spell table and the thief table to just use the OSE book in a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Basic 5e, Anyone Actually Play It?

My favorite D&D right now is B/X in the form of OSE as well as Dungeon Crawl Classics.

    D&D Older Editions

It's better this way. Easier to find B/X content without swimming through a sea of 5e.

OSR Fans of old school D&D, what are your bare essentials?

The big one is fast combat rounds. If my players are frozen by a whole bunch of combat options on their sheet at level 5, then I have a problem. OSE, DCC, and Black Hack are my jam. DCC more for the modularity. If I'm don't feel like doing the tables, I don't have to. As far as speed goes...

    D&D 5E (2024) 50th Anniversary: 6E in 2024?

That it's going to use the same math is all that I care about. Hopefully they change the character classes to have fewer moving parts. That's the biggest problem that I have DMing, I can't keep all of the classes in my head, and often enough I have a couple of players that can't keep track of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Mysteries of Candlekeep as a Campaign

I think you could do it, but you'd want to mix in a bunch of mini-adventures along the way. Like the keep was giving you more access then you'd normally get because you're willing to go clear out dungeons for them.

D&D General You're Hasbro/WotC Marketing - What Do You Do for the 50-year Anniversary in 2024?

I think we're already getting our hints at 6e, and by the time 2024 comes around they'll be screaming from the rafters. I think that 2024 sounds like a wonderful year for a 6th edition that would fully mathematically compatible with 5e. Hopefully - since this would be mathematically compatible...

    accidental double-post.

    D&D 5E (2024) Revised 6E prediction thread

I don't think that's the ask. I think the ask is that the edition gets revised core rulebooks every few (5-8?) years. I think the core math for 5th edition has been pretty strong (although I prefer the power curve of B/X a bit more), but revising parts that don't work well, or have become...

    D&D 5E (2024) Revised 6E prediction thread

Whether they call it 5.1e or 5.5e or 6e or 5e Revised is all semantics. I like the idea of them keeping the math the same keeping chapters 5+ of the PHB mostly unchanged (except for cleaning up clunky rules like underwater and dual wielding). Character creation where all the important changes...

D&D 5E (2014) Which three classic settings do you hope for?

Voted Dark Sun, Planescape/Spelljammer hybrid, and Greyhawk. I have a strong interest in seeing what really distinguishes Dark Sun in actual play, and I'm not going to track down a group to do it in 2e. I said Planescape/Spelljammer hybrid, because I think it will come in the form of an...

    D&D 5E (2014) 3 Classic Settings Coming To 5E?

I think the strongest thing we have to locks are Planescape and Dark Sun. I don't know that Spelljammer has enough interest to be it's own book, but I could see it and Planescape being conjoined into a single setting book. Kara Tur and Al Qadim have too much stereotype baggage to do, unless...

WotC Dungeons & Dragons Fans Seek Removal of Oriental Adventures From Online Marketplace

Very late to the conversation here, but I think removing the product just gives it heightened status, and people who want it will just find it elsewhere. Demonitizing it might be a good direction, or putting all proceeds to a relevant charity might be another.

D&D 5E (2014) WotC Confirms Horror-themed Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden

Barrier Peaks is an interesting thought. :). I like it.
