D&D 5E (2014) How Magical or Non-Magical Should the Monk Be?

Because they are such Johnny-Come-Lately classes (and synonyms for wizard), i would prefer they released some classes with more traction first (like Druid, Monk, Paladin, Ranger, etc).

D&D 5E (2014) How Magical or Non-Magical Should the Monk Be?

Yes, as I said, the original Monk was sort of a Druid/Rogue/Psionic deal. They do not train like a fighter.

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Q&A (11Oct)

Dig it, especially the Backgrounds deal, there was always that question about "old" 1st level characters. My buddy back in the day played a Dark Sun Half-Elf Druid/Mage/Psionicist (I know, I know...), but he envisioned the character like Sean Connery in Medicine Man (so, we had a grey-haired...

D&D 5E (2014) How Magical or Non-Magical Should the Monk Be?

Yeah, Mearls mentioned the Monk being the easiest of classes to design so far for 5th Ed. i guess they released the Sorcerer and Warlock first (which still irks me) to appease the non-Vancain crowd?

D&D 5E (2014) How Magical or Non-Magical Should the Monk Be?

Yes, and I dig it, but the Monk as the class is not a Background, any more than Paladin or Ranger are. Not to say you can't make a Fighter-Monk/Paladin/Ranger type, it's just not the real deal.

D&D 5E (2014) October Playtest Packet - Magic Items, Updated XP, Monster Traits

Yeah, and I thought they stated giants would be going back to their original Strengths (Hill = 19, Stone = 20, Frost = 21, Fire = 22, Cloud = 23, Storm = 24), has that changed (a storm giant now has a 29 Str)?

D&D 5E (2014) How Magical or Non-Magical Should the Monk Be?

The D&D monk has always transcended the real world dictionary definition of "Monk" (think Bannor/The Bloodguard). Like many other class titles in D&D.

    D&D 5E (2014) Oh Hai Katana!

I remember an old Dragon had the Basilard (punching short sword, basically).

I'm hoping it will be more organic than that.

Well, not really..."...the Lady of the Lake..."

That conjures up a one-handed horseman's blade for me.

I agree, call it something else; sticks out.

D&D 5E (2014) How Magical or Non-Magical Should the Monk Be?

Well, totally disagree; I guess like most things, this comes down to personal desire. There's a great song by Allan Holdsworth called Distance vs. Desire.

We can also slash with a short sword, so, more weapons need to cover more than one damage type.

D&D 5E (2014) How Magical or Non-Magical Should the Monk Be?

Not at all, it can (should) be its own class. Fighters cannot/do not/don't have, etc: -Talk to animals & plants -increased speed -Heal themselves -Extra Resistance to ESP/mind attacks -Fall great distances unharmed -Extra resistance to disease/poison ...etc.

D&D 5E (2014) How Magical or Non-Magical Should the Monk Be?

Me too, in the context it seems to be used, a Gish is specifically a Githyanki thing (Fighter/Magic-User), just like Anti-Paladins.

D&D 5E (2014) How Magical or Non-Magical Should the Monk Be?

How was it acrobatic? And rogues can't talk to animals & plants, or have increased speed, heal themselves, resist ESP/mind attacks, bonus damage with weapons, 17 HD, etc, etc.

D&D 5E (2014) How Magical or Non-Magical Should the Monk Be?

Exactly, the original monk to me is a sort of Druid/Rogue/Psionic hybrid with a layer of Bannor/The Bloodguard (the "X-Factor").

    D&D 5E (2014) Oh Hai Katana!

I would prefer not, the rapier thing for elves is a relatively new thing, they are traditionally kick-ass with longswords and bows. I'm glad that in the Drow entry in the Bestiary they are back to wielding longswords (and drow ones at that), not rapiers (3rd Ed started that). I do agree the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Oct playtest magic items are legend---wait for it--ary!

I really like in the Flametongue description they make reference to The Queen of Chaos and the Wind Dukes of Aqaa, and in the Plate of Etherealness to the Dao (khan), I see a a lot of classic lore returning in 5th Ed, nice.
