D&D 5E (2014) October Playtest Packet - Magic Items, Updated XP, Monster Traits

I really like in the Flametongue description they make reference to The Queen of Chaos and the Wind Dukes of Aqaa, and in the Plate of Etherealness to the Dao (khan), I see a a lot of classic lore returning in 5th Ed, nice.

D&D 5E (2014) Are Heavy Weapons really their own category?

And there are two-handed finesse weapons (which I really dig).

    D&D 5E (2014) Oh Hai Katana!

That's what the thin-blade is to the rapier. To be honest, I can do without extreme versions of weapons (that basically make existing ones obsolete). The Katana > No-Daichi > Buick.

    D&D 5E (2014) Oh Hai Katana!

For min-maxers to up their damage (like fullblade vs. greatsword).

    D&D 5E (2014) Oh Hai Katana!

    Thin-blades do 1d8 damage and court-blades 1d10 (rapiers only do 1d6).

    D&D 5E (2014) Oh Hai Katana!

Total, Ogami Ito is a serious badass - Horse Slaying style!

    D&D 5E (2014) Oh Hai Katana!

Cool, but that can conjure an image of someone who makes a gross mess. The Gross Messer is here!

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's do math

    Bingo, dig it.

    D&D 5E (2014) Oh Hai Katana!

Bingo, (though that does d10), that's exactly what I thought, and a good way to re-fluff the name for a non-Asian/Oriental setting. I totally dig it, but what I dig most of all, out of all the weapons in the play-test is, that the quarterstaff is a finesse weapon (and useable by the we folk).

D&D 5E (2014) October Playtest Packet - Magic Items, Updated XP, Monster Traits

    1) Right on, I do like set scores for girdles of giant Str. 2) Cool, so a storm giant is amongst the strongest things in the multiverse, the only things stronger having a 30, like Thor (he should have 30 special *winks*).

    D&D 5E (2014) Oct playtest magic items are legend---wait for it--ary!

Sorry if these questions have already been answered, but: 1) Are characters still limited to a max of 20 in ability scores, or with a belt of giant strength can they actually have a 29 Str? 2) I thought the Giant strengths were going back to 1st Ed values (Hill = 19, Stone = 20, Frost = 21...

    D&D 5E (2014) What should Rogues do?

The Rogue definitely needs the most attention/love of the classes so far in the 2nd packet, IMO. I like that Sneak Attack might not be intrinsic to all Rogues, but an option.

AD&D 2E 2E Core Reprints Due in May

I would like to know how the reprints are selling, and if they have renewed any new interest in those editions. This is very cool, the 2nd Ed Monstrous Manual is quite popular.

D&D 5E (2014) How Magical or Non-Magical Should the Monk Be?

I had a blast playing one in a Kara Tur campaign, the extra HD at 1st level really helps, and the DM was kind enough to grant max (8 hp).

D&D 5E (2014) How Magical or Non-Magical Should the Monk Be?

This is obviously a personal thing, and you seem to be taking it personally, really not a big deal, you think the 1st Ed monk is crap ("notoriously", in your opinion), and I think's it'a good (just needs improvement, IME). No need to get all ornery (we don't have to agree).

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E Character Advancement

The players and I (DM) decide when it's a good time to level up (been doing it that way for years).

    D&D 4E More reflections on 4e and 5e.

3rd and 4th Ed can both go take a hike for me at this point (though they do have concepts/mechanics I dig: incarnum, etc), that's why I'm digging 5th Ed so far, looks like a proper successor to Basic and 1st Ed.

D&D 5E (2014) How Magical or Non-Magical Should the Monk Be?

    1) Not cleaned up enough. 2) According to your opinion, it would seem.

D&D 5E (2014) If an option is presented, it needs to be good enough to take.

    1) I find them a kludge (would not force it on children, actually, especially children). 2) Alas, I am aways the DM (never the bride, always the bridesmaid...*breaks into inconsolable sob*)
