    Lolth!

The entry points out that Lolth discorporates at 25% HP, so presumably when bloodied in Spider Queen form. That makes sense, as the form presented in the preview does not have the Discorporate ability. The lack of multiple initiative actions makes the drow form of Lolth less imposing than I...

    Fewer conditions?

I feel similarly about marking. Actually, when I make soldier monsters, I almost never give them marking attacks -- instead I rely on things like threatening reach, basic or opportunity attacks that slow/knock prone/push/immobilize, and immediate actions to mitigate ally damage.

    Someone has MM3 at RPG.Net

I think a lot of the monsters that Shroomy mentioned from the 1e MM, MM2, and FF may never see the light of day. The tiny fey, for example, seem like they would fall into that category of "creatures that you don't need combat stats for" and so may not be converted. Paraelementals, for example...

New character? Hybrid Fighter/Warlord or MC Fighter/Warlord or Warlord/Fighter

Well, I look at the party composition -- swordmage, TWF ranger, pacifist cleric -- and that screams too little damage to me. A fighter can do near striker damage, and would make the front line a bit more robust, and swordmages seem to do better when they have another defender to play off of...

New character? Hybrid Fighter/Warlord or MC Fighter/Warlord or Warlord/Fighter

Is the ranger melee or ranged? How about the cleric? Asking because, generally, melee warlords work best with a fair complement of melee fighters. Given your party composition, I'd probably shade towards a fighter MC warlord, or a fighter/warlord hybrid, since the party probably would benefit...

    Half-dragon/dragon disciple

Seems like a paragon path would make sense, and there are a few out there already that could fit the bill, or be tweaked, like Scion of Arkhosia, Dragon Guardian, and Dragonsoul Heir. Alternatively, maybe just switch race to dragonborn, and take the Scion of Arkhosia PP? You reskin the...

    Character Concepts - Barbarians

I instantly thought of Conan as a hybrid fighter|rogue or fighter|warlord MC'ed to rogue, using Versatile Duelist and a bastard sword or broadsword -- not too far from what you did. Doesn't Kratos scream the Godhunter ED? I know it probably isn't the best mechanically...but man does he ever...

    Kobold Love ?

The Boots of Caiphon are a level 24 item -- though it is not simply a 1 square shift, but a shift equal to your speed, so more powerful than Shifty. Still, a kobold's Shifty racial power would be available from level 1. I don't think this is a relevant comparison. Kobolds do indeed seem ripe...

    Building a New Damage Table

Here's a rundown of at-will basic attacks from the recent spate of excerpts from the MM3, Dark Sun, Demonomicon, and other sources: Abyssal Scavenger (level 2 skirmisher): melee 1d8+5 Anakore Hunter (level 5 lurker): melee 2d8+4 Quasit (level 7 controller): melee 2d6+5 Anakore Render (level 7...

    Building a New Damage Table

My gut feeling is that this is true for MM1. I think MM2 is generally better. And if the previews for MM3 are any indication, WotC has increased the damage significantly.

    Building a New Damage Table

So I just did a very quick, very rough analysis using the following data / assumptions: 1. Approximate average PC damage per attack as a function of level, using at-will powers 2. HP for a leader-type PC (12 + Con, 5 HP/level) 3. Average normal monster damage based on table from DMG, p. 185 4...

    Building a New Damage Table

It might make sense to start with some sort of basic assumption about how many hits a typical PC should be able to take from a standard monster of equal level. If I were to make an utterly uninformed WAG, paragon monsters should be doing 50% more damage than they are doing right, and epic...

    D&D 3.x Eberron - Changes between 3.5e and 4e

Another big change was the scale of Khorvaire was reduced, I think, from the 3.5e map to the 4e map. So now distances are not quite as epic.

    Game Derailment

An old DM of mine was once drawing a rough map of a valley we were in. Suddenly all the players start snickering. He looks at his map, rolls his eyes, and finally starts laughing along with us...his map looked just like a Georgia O'Keefe painting.

    Splitting XP with long-term NPCs?

I would never split XP with an NPC. I'd make Splug into a companion character using the DMG2 rules. If he ends up staying long term with the party, I would simply make his level match the party level. In battles, I would add the equivalent of one level-matched monster to the XP budget, but...

    Best Healer?

Well, assuming your rogue is melee-focused, your front line consists of the barbarian and the rogue, with your warlock and psion in the back, and the assassin probably skulking around and mixing it up with melee and ranged powers. Since you don't have a defender, a melee cleric could complement...

[Philadelphia, PA] Looking for a game starting August/September

Hi all, I'll be moving back to Philadelphia in August, and I'd like to continue playing D&D once I am back. I am open to playing D&D 3.5e and Pathfinder, but mostly I want to play/DM 4th edition. If I were DMing, I would be interested in running the new Dark Sun setting, or the Chaos Scar...

What's the most critical piece of dungeoneering equipment?

It's gotta be a light source, closely followed by a rope.

    Is the Monk overpowered?

I don't think anyone has described the monk as overpowered up to this point. Compared to rangers and rogues, the monk does not seem to generate nearly as much single target damage, and despite its ability to deal damage to multiple foes, the monk does not match the sorcerer in this arena. I...

D&D Alumni: Cloakers! Cave Fishers! Babau!

When they started mentioning Imix and Olhydra as primordials (in MotP, I think), that pretty much cemented them as level 30+ solos. Maybe they will include the avatars of elemental evil that appeared in one of the late 3.5e MMs (MM4? MM5?) as sort of "aspects". I know most primordials are...
