Difference Between Use-Activated, Command Activated and Continuous Items

Thanks for the quick reply. No specific question on an item. I am creating my own custom wonderous items and just wanted to see the difference. How loudly do you have to say the command word? I'm working on a Key of Opening that will cast the Silent Portal cantrip frm Magic of Faerun. That...

Difference Between Use-Activated, Command Activated and Continuous Items

For the purposes of creating magic items, what is the difference between Use-Activated, Command Activated and Continuous items? Continuous seems simple enough. It's always on. But what's the difference between use-activated and command-activated? Do you actually have to have a command word...

    It's a beautiful baby +2 Vorpal Sword!

    Spiked chain tactics

I'd drop the +2 Spiked Chain for a +1 Spiked Chain of Sweeping. The "sweeping" weapon attribute is found in the Magic of Faerun book. It is a +1 cost increase and but gives +4 to the opposed strength checks of a trip attack. Perfect for your low strength but agile fighter.

    Favorite Race And/Or Template?

Drow, because they're just so cool. I mean drow in the imaginatively expansive sense, not dual wielding ranger sense.

Thief, the Dark Project, the RPG?

That could work, but it need not be so limited. One criticism of the Thief series is the lack of open ended game play and the repeatative nature of game play. How many variants of 'get in, steal loot and (kill the baddie, find the note, etc)" can you have? But those limits were largely due to...

Thief, the Dark Project, the RPG?

"What was that!? Hmm... Must have been the sweet pingings of a boiler." The Thief setting is just so awesome. It has a great story, a realistic setting, cool gadgets and TONS of 'mood." The whole "feel" of the game is awesome and very believable. Stumble into the guard captain's bunk room and...

    "Steampunk" RPG books

I agree with this. Sorcery and Steam comes highly recommended. Lots of new classes and PrCs, a handful of spells and feats, and lots of cool equipment and gadgets including clockwork toys, steam-powered armor, etc. There are great guidelines for how to incorporate some or all of the material...

    "It's a joke name, sir."

Silly names in games really bother me. They really make the whole thing a joke. It destroys the illusion of reality for me. Regular names like "John" and the like aren't as bad, but don't really contribute to the fantasy setting. There are lots of really cool fantasy names to use. As an...

    What's the Deal with Staves?

Oh, I see. 50 charges total, with each spell using a certain amount. That can be handy for certain seldom-used spells.

    What's the Deal with Staves?

Hmmm... that makes a big difference. Still, why would some charges cost more than others? You don't have to keep answering my 3.5 noob questions!

    What's the Deal with Staves?

I guess whatn you factor in the 50 charges they're competitive. The ones listed in the DMG/SRD just seem so limited in usefulness and costly. For example: These seem very expensive for having such few charges.

    What's the Deal with Staves?

Well wands have 50 charges and are very cheap. The staves I've seen only have a handful of charges and are really expensive. I'm not sure that the extended duration and raised DC is worth the extra gp, exp and time to create. But I would like to hear from the more experienced players what spells...

    What's the Deal with Staves?

Ok, that is a major difference, but most staves have charges and not "per day" charges. That really mimimizes their utility.

    What's the Deal with Staves?

They costs way more than wands and typically have only a handful of charges before they turn into an inert stick. What gives here? What am I missing?

D&D 3.x [3.5] Ring of Protection from Evil cost?

My understanding of the item creation rules is that when an item casts a continuous effect, you calculate from the bonus it gives, not merely the spell cost. So for example, a Ring of Mage Armor should be calculated by the armor bonus it gives if it is a continuous item, not the mage armor spell...
