Do you always need to save the world

This is my problem. The D&D game when I joined my current group, save the world (3 technically because it was spelljammer stuff). Dresden Files game, every adventure was saving the world while moving closer to finding The Master. Current Star Wars FATE game- elite force fighting the Vong to save...

Do you always need to save the world

This solution is system dependent in my experience. Many games aim for "level appropriate" encounters. If the PCs can each wipe out whole squads of enemies, I'm cool with it. If storm troopers are still supposed to be a threat then this break verisimilitude for me.

Do you always need to save the world

This is one of my biggest issues with saving the world. Where is the help? At least LotR gave a reason why there wasn't an army of dwarves, elves, and men taking the right back to the mountain. But most games it doesn't make any sense. "You are the troubleshooters." is not a good enough...

Do you always need to save the world

Reyemile nailed it! The given win makes it a sure success for PCs. It also raises questions why the big names aren't fighting the world ending problem. I really dislike the Elminster type character giving some mid-level dudes a quest to save existence, uh... why are you trusting us with this...

Do you always need to save the world

I understand that, and go along with adventures that save the world. But I prefer things like my character defending his home. Or fighting to protect a trade route, space station, or something else that is important to the character. Fighting to save the whole galaxy will still save that space...

Do you always need to save the world

I hate saving the world. As a player it is fun.. the first time. As a character, why? Obviously, it matters to save the world. But trying to grasp saving so many people and having such an impact... the mind struggles. I much prefer to focus on things that matter more to the characters. Take the...

    D&D 5E (2014) no wizards?

I don't think pulling wizards from the setting is that bad. The scholarly thing can easily be done with druids, clerics, sorcerers, and warlocks. Just because you have natural talent to cast a spell doesn't mean you don't need to practice and study to make it happen. The wizards make items a...

Working on a Criminal Code for a Pirate/Port Town; input welcome.

I wouldn't put Pirates as Chaotic. Pirate Codes Existed. You may want to look into something like the Code of Hammurabi for some inspiration. While it is a bit harsh, it is very straight forward. i.e. You built my home and it collapsed killing my son? Your son dies. Those may provide some...

    Breaking Group Habits

Well that makes perfect sense, I feel silly now. I was looking at it differently, from a counseling perspective. But you are right, the others likely aren't as likely to look for body language. The ability to respond after time is a good one too, it will hopefully keep certain members from...

    Breaking Group Habits

That's what I think I need to aim for. Once the semester calms down I'm going to check out the Gumshoe game(s) I have. I'll also dig deeper into some systems they do like and find ways to reward non-combat options more. I have not. When something like this can upset people, I prefer in person...

    Breaking Group Habits

I really like the idea of splitting characters*, but that really only works for FATE. Also the group has 7 people total; adding more characters bogs things down quickly. I don't think that path is best for this group. But it is a good idea. I have a gumshoe game or two on PDF, I'll need to go...

    Breaking Group Habits

    1) The honest conversation is difficult. I have been able to discuss things one on one, but in a group they seem to fall into solid roles "he always plays chaotic neutral characters" "he always plays a front line fighter" which makes this difficult. When one player was being disruptive, it took...

    Breaking Group Habits

Has anyone had success with changing or breaking group habits for their role playing groups? I'm hoping to be able to run a game soon, but they games I enjoy running are ones that they seem to like, yet they pull back to a "kill, loot, who's next?" mentality. My current group has been together...

Pictures to inspire your next character

This is cool. I've found National Geographic's Pictures of the Day handy for inspiration, although you need to dig a bit to find people. The magazines are great too.

What's a resonable price-point for entry into the RPG hobby?

I agree. I can see why people like bigger books or more to a book. But for an entering player, I think it is just intimidating. For example, In my college RPG club, we could get many more players to try Mouse Guard, Savage Worlds, Corporation or even Star Wars Saga Edition rather than...

What's a resonable price-point for entry into the RPG hobby?

I think the three book model works well for a company, possibly an established name with an established player base. But, it does not help bring people into the game. I have given gifts of games to people to help get them into the hobby. Single volume books for $30-$40, no real issue. Three...

What's a resonable price-point for entry into the RPG hobby?

Not too far off. A starter set needs an affordable price. It also needs to not be too complicated. I think Burning Wheel does this well The first ~80 pages are all that is needed for a game. The book even says to stop and go play. Once you are familiar with the core rules, use the systems...

What's a resonable price-point for entry into the RPG hobby?

I think the ideal price point for someone getting into the hobby is free. If Suzzie asks Cameron about her game, and Cameron invites her to play, it costs Suzzie nothing. She can play and decide if she likes the hobby or not. Without someone to help get a potential player into the game, I...

The only fantasy world map you'll ever need

This is my issues with most settings, they have too much sameness. My current group LOVES to make everything a kitchen sink. We just wrapped up a Dresden Files game, which had stuff from the following: Dresden Files Percy Jackson HIghlander (original movie and I think the TV series) Buffy...
