fair enough about casting time. I'll agree with you there. For wizards, do they have to memorize which spells are metamagiced by the rod when they select spells, as they would with a regular metamagic feat? Or can they use the rod at casting time?

variant rules I think an a large optional rule section would be a FABULOUS edition. Many people have a large section of house rules. Include these in the list, so a dm can customize his game with aid instead of doing something tha hasn't been playtested.

I vote for the half-orc. The paladin has a more interesting backround, but I find that the Paladin to be painful to role-play. But if you dig them, I would recommend the dwarf character.
