WotC Talks OGL... Again! Draft Coming Jan 20th With Feedback Survey; v1 De-Auth Still On

One thing to remember with this whole de-authorization of the OGL 1.0a business-- The original leak and FAQ around it suggested that the Wizards leadership of today doesn't understand the OGL. They seem to see it as a license that lets other people use their content, with no implications...

WotC Talks OGL... Again! Draft Coming Jan 20th With Feedback Survey; v1 De-Auth Still On

Open gaming may be unusual, but it does not exist in a vacuum. It was explicitly inspired by the whole open source / free software movement. Most web servers and high performance computers in the world use Linux or something derived from it now-- something that was released under an open...

WotC Talks OGL... Again! Draft Coming Jan 20th With Feedback Survey; v1 De-Auth Still On

No. Content restrictions (like "no offensive stuff") absolutely do not belong in an open license. You don't see anything like that in Creative Commons. The open license needs to be just about the legal terms for what can be reused. Trying to police tone and offensiveness will undermine it...

I am still traumatized from a game of Diplomacy that I played in 1983.

WOIN Open-Licensed WOIN Starter Set Coming in 2023

Assuming the timing works, will this use the ORC? Or a custom open license? Will the older WOIN books be re-released to use the ORC?

Paizo Announces New Irrevocable Open RPG License To Replace the OGL

Quibble -- there will be no SRD's in ORC. ORC will be a license, totally detached from any given rules set. People who release rules sets or SRD can choose to release them under the ORC if they wish. I suspect that Paizo will announce that Pathfinder 2e (and also Starfinder?) SRDs are...

...I have to admit it's very difficult to get over my cynicism about the utter irrelevance of change.org to, well, anything.

OGL: Kobold Press 'Raising Our Flag' For New Open RPG

Of course, a 21-year work-for-hire copyright term would put D&D 3e in the public domain now. We can dream. Given the current world, copyright is more likely to go to indefinite perpetual than back to anything like that.

OGL: Kobold Press 'Raising Our Flag' For New Open RPG

I keep seeing the conflation of license and system that happened with the OGOGL. Too often people used "OGL" to mean compatible with the open parts of D&D. They're not the same thing, just as GPL doesn't imply (say) Linux. Going forward, it would be nice to have one standard open gaming...

The OGL -- Just What's Going On?

Gygax deserves a lot of credit for his foundational role in our hobby, but he was also wrong about lots of things. We shouldn't put anybody on a pedestal (not even Ryan Dancy!) and expect that we'll agree with their take on everything.
