Open Letter to WotC from Chris Dias

What seems to be missing from all this is something kind of basic, I think: What is the hypothesis to be proved, and how strong is the evidence that the hypothesis is true or false? For example, if the hypothesis is "extraterrestrials kidnapped me," no number of anecdotes from me or anyone...

I'm not sure what your DM had in mind, but (spoiler for The Scouring of Gate Pass below):

    Shades

IMC the wording discrepancy identified by the OP is treated as an oversight (or, in a more positive light, "conjuration spells" is read as a foreshortening of "conjuration (summoning) and conjuration (creation) spells), and shades is restricted to the same subschools the other two spells are...

Open Letter to WotC from Chris Dias

Again, people keep saying this, but nothing approximating verifiable proof has been offered. Where is your proof that Hasbro/WOTC "fears" the competition offered by Pathfinder? Also it depends entirely on your definition of "more successful" and "surpass," of which you seem to be offering two or...

    D&D 3.x Greater Consumptive Field (3.5)

As to the Strength bonus, in the Libris Mortis version the Strength bonus is +2, period. See my edit above that applies to the Spell Compendium version. As to the "non-epic" ways to get Persistent Spell, whatever. As to the "same source" rule, it's the same casting of the same spell; of course...

    D&D 3.x Greater Consumptive Field (3.5)

Well, first of all greater consumptive field (Libris Mortis) affected by Persistent Spell (SRD: Divine) is a 13th-level spell, requiring four Improved Spell Capacity feats. So given that we're already talking an epic caster, we can probably accept a little grandiosity. However, I'm not sure it's...

My opinion differs from yours, and I need to leave it at that.

    bypassing prereqs...

I'm inclined to agree with this isolated point, but I use it instead to support my opinion that the spirit of the rules remains important. If the designers can't get things to work the way they ought to, then it's a task the DM ought to take on, in my view. I realize my view is not universal.

    bypassing prereqs...

Seems to me it's already been cogently argued both ways in this very thread. Anyway, instead of engaging in a lengthy, grognard-style rant, arguing chapter and verse, pulling out dictionaries, and so forth, I'll just lament that that it seems like building characters has become all about what...

    bypassing prereqs...

Maybe, but I've never seen one "earlier than intended" "trick" that wasn't either totally against the spirit of the rules or excruciatingly erroneous by the letter of the rules. These things always seem to devolve into taking Some Feat (or Being Some Race or Taking Some Other Class Level) That...

    bypassing prereqs...

Why are we trying to "bypass" or "skirt" these requirements anyway? The requirements need to be satisfied; otherwise, the prestige class cannot be taken.

How nerdy are you about English?

It varies; mostly depends on the context. My day job includes technical editing. I want my children to learn correct English. My mother-in-law is a retired technical editor and bristles at incorrect English. On the other hand, if none of those things are at work, I feel that how other people...

    The poster below me

False, not enough experience with smart-phones to say one way or the other about any of them. The poster below me will make a canny remark about how much the new Pathfinder adventure path calls to mind Ravenloft.

Improving the transition to Paragon [spoilers]

Have Duke Gallo induct them as honorary knights of Dassen in some appropriately splendid ceremony. Ring the bells, hang some sashes, do the thing up right -- have Gallo tell them that this gives them the rank they need to lead his forces in battle. Have him tell them, with appropriate gravitas...

    Opinions on "Does Format Matter"

I voted "format didn't matter," because even if the page design were somehow closer to 3E (see the attached for a "quick and dirty" attempt at such a thing), the rules material would still be what it is. Cause I always think in terms of page design when I think "format."

Who is your favorite Doctor Who?

Nobody will or can top Tom in my book, though I do wish we had seen more of Paul; I hear he and Colin are doing a smashing job in their audio stories. All are/were great in their own way.

Do you think WoTC should be sued?

I've been resisting posting here, but I think some people are still undervaluing the notion that at 180 degrees, coffee is hot enough to cause third-degree burns. These burns are quite awful and don't really compare to sunburns or your usual sort of scalding burns, which typically, you know...

    On the Origin of Monsters

Reynard: I actually imagine a gap in knowledge such that the studied wizard (and the evil warlord who's decided to put the knowledge into practice) has learned that x+y=z, whereas your standard superstitious commoner knows only that x+y=one of a set of bad results which might include z. But...

    On the Origin of Monsters

It hit me as I was driving to work one morning: why should we ever saddle D&D PCs with the "innocent orc" scenario in the first place? Conan doesn't have to worry about that sort of thing. The Fellowship of the Ring certainly didn't have a problem with it. So what if we suppose that most...
