Is 4e bringing new players to the game?

Obryn, I do not want 4E to fail. I may not be a huge fan of the system, but that doesn't mean I want the D&D flag ship to crash and burn. In fact, there are many things about the new edition I admire...it just isn't my cup of tea. The success of 4E, will impact the hobby as a whole. If 4E fails...

When Your Group Jumps the Shark

I edited that in. The point is, while his details were fuzzy, he was correct about the origin of the term.

When Your Group Jumps the Shark

He wasn't that wrong. It was an underwater net or cage instead of a tank. And water skis instead of motor bike. Easy enough mistake to make. And it doesn't change the overall point of the remark.

When Your Group Jumps the Shark

meh. I wasn't too impressed with the article, and as others have observed that isn't really what "jump the shark" means. Also, it sounds like he was upset at his players for not meta-gaming. I am all for tactics, but you are also playing characters, who aren't averaging potential damage in their...

Is 4e bringing new players to the game?

I don't know what numbers they are hoping to get, but I do think this PHBII is much different than previous "splat" books or core book sequels, since it really is a modular release of the core system and they want the numbers to reflect this.

Is 4e bringing new players to the game?

That does look good, but I would think that the goal was to have PHB1 numbers, since PHBII is really part of a trickled release of the core rules. What were the PHB I numbers.

3E to 4E Gripes (Was: What Did You Want Fourth Edition to be Like?)

The taste tests themselves were flawed as well. Drinkers only sampled New Coke in Small sips; which is a very different experience than drinking a whole can or bottle. This largely explains the success of the Pesi Challenge too. New Coke and Pepsi were both sweeter than the original coke. And it...

    Foreign Language D&D Books?

This is really great idea for brushing up your language skills. I have been trying to track down the 3.5 or 4.0 Players handbook in Arabic if anyone knows where I can get it. I am so tired of reading "Ali and the Camel".

Is 4e bringing new players to the game?

I think what mournblade is trying to say is 4E was designed alongside the marketing strategy. So that the marketing needs fed into the rules and vice versa. That doesn't mean the things that are good about it, are just a random product of the marketing. Someone still had to design those good...

    4e Change of mind

Humor is a matter of taste I guess. I thought Borat was funny on the Ali G show, and the movie was pretty good too.

What Are Some Common First-time Dm Questions?

I started DMing back in 1989, and my biggest problem was knowing what to do during overland travel. I understood how to adjudicate it. But I couldn't figure out how to smoothly transition from locale to locale in a believeable way. I also wanted voyages to mean something the way they do in...

Is 4e bringing new players to the game?

This could be a double edged sword. Part of the draw for many gamers is the work involved. Personally I can go either way. Sometimes I like a robust and invovled system, other times I want something more stream-lined and easy (though for that I normally go to Savage Worlds rather than 4E). It...

    4e Change of mind

My wife speaks broken English, and I studied Arabic with Palestinians and Saudis. Borat's syntax isn't too far off actually. Kasakh is Turkic though, not arabic or thai. But I know that Cohen was speaking Hebrew in the movie Borat when he was supposed to be speaking Kazakh, so my guess is he...

    4e Change of mind

The tongue in cheek part means the intention wasn't to foment edition wars, but poke fun at them. Since Murad's strongest argument against 4E was it "is for children". I am sure Murad feels bad that his attempt at humor wasn't well recieved or that some took offense but it was obviously meant to...

    4e Change of mind

I admit nothing, but it is clear to me that Murad was a tongue-in-cheek commentary and attempt at humor. That aside. I am sincere. I have no desire for edition wars. I don't care what edition anyone prefers. But I don't like being told by other gamers what edition I should prefer.

    4e Change of mind

In my group 4E was either something people immediately loved or hated. And since its release the partisans have only hardened their positions. What troubles me is both sides evangelize like they are saving souls. As if our value as gamers depends on which edition we prefer. The whole edition war...

Is 4e bringing new players to the game?

I don't own stock in Hasbro so I haven't looked at their quarterly reports, but that was what I had in mind; not individual sales holders. Still there must be some mention of WOTC, especially since the Wall Street journal noted that the new edition of Dungeons and Dragons might be an ace up...

Is 4e bringing new players to the game?

Hasbro is a public company. Getting a hold on some sales figures info shouldn't be too hard.

3E to 4E Gripes (Was: What Did You Want Fourth Edition to be Like?)

Honestly, by the end of 3.5 my biggest complaint was the expense of staying current. So what really made me decide not to stick with 4E after buying the PHB, was knowing they would be releasing one PHB a year and various powers books. To me this is just a smarter way to market the splat book...
