Greece vs. Rome: Which is better for a Campaign?

There was a Hercules and Xena role playing game that came out some years back. I actually own the boxed set, even though I have never played it.

Canada's Stonehenge: scientist says Alberta sun temple has 5,000-year-old calendar

The article says this guy is a physics and chemistry professor. I don't know anything about him myself, so I could be missing an important detail here, but on the face of it, seems like he would be a poor source of information on the subject.

    Coinage in your Games?

Sometimes too much detail can derail immersion in the game. When it comes to coinage, I am of the opinion that you should keep it simple. Either stick to gold, silver, platinum, copper; or rename them in an easy to remember fashion: crowns, royals, tins, etc. As soon as someone brings out a...

Greece vs. Rome: Which is better for a Campaign?

I know much less about greece; but I think it would be loads of fun; particularly after having just re-watched 300. It seems like it would be a little more free-form, because of the lack of a central authority. My thinking is Greece is probably better for Quest/Epic Adventures, and Rome better...

Overland Travel: a return to Hexploration?

Personally I think a blend of the two is best. If the DM scripts the overland travel, it feels artificial; and more like his story, not the parties. If he allows you to deviate, and explore, but is able to bring it into the overall story thats the best.

Greece vs. Rome: Which is better for a Campaign?

These seem to nail it. Again if your campaign world is big, you can always have an expanding roman-esq empire in the east, and a thriving greek-like culture in the west. Or you can completley combine the two. Make the empire less strongly centralized. Or at least, less well equiped to deal...

Greece vs. Rome: Which is better for a Campaign?

It depends on the campaign;) Honestly, I could go for either; I would suggest blending them both together. You can probably get the most bang for your buck this way; particularly if you are designing an entire bonze age campaign world. Shouldn't be too hard. Chances are, players who get...

Overland Travel: a return to Hexploration?

It seems like lots of settings don't even use hex maps anymore, and that the idea of Hexploration isn't really included in the DM sections of most rule books. I am all for hexploration, so long as it doesn't become too boring. If the DM can't handle making stuff up on the fly, or dealing with...

Rant -- GM Control, Taking it Too Far?

Hussar, I do appreciate your point of view, and think DMs who get overly pedantic about their world can be annoying as well. However for me, it reduces my enjoyment as a player when DMs allow everything and anything; particularly races such as dragonborn and teiflings. Again, it might be because...

Nostalgia and some early D&D'esque influences

I started gaming at the tail end of 1E, so my experience might be different from the OPs. I remember watching the D&D Cartoon and He-Man as a kid. At about the same time there were a bunch of fantasy and sci fi movies that came, which I also remember: the Never Ending Story, The Last Unicorn...

Rant -- GM Control, Taking it Too Far?

For me as a player, I prefer a DM that has a vision of a campaign world, and enforces that vision for the purpose of consistency and flavor. Once the campaign gets started though, I do expect the DM to be open minded and fair. So if he doesn't want teiflings, no problem. Especially if it doesn't...

    Occidental Adventures

Fair enough. But this still shapes the fantasy worlds the respective cultures would create. Though there does seem to be a religious devotion to parents in Thailand, that is nothing like we had in west that I can think of. They have a very hierarchical view of people, and the parents are very...

Christianity has a long history of mysticism (as does Islam and Judaism) and I think meditation, at least to me, is easiest to understand from a Christian perspective through this lens. I know of many Catholics and Episcopals who have incorporated meditation into their faith (often at the urging...

    Occidental Adventures

You do raise a good point. It would depend on the Asian culture doing the interpretation. I am most familiar with Thai and Cambodian Culture. I am also married to a Thai Buddhist, one thing that jumps out at me, now that I am thinking about it, is this. Often her perspective, and the perspective...

    Occidental Adventures

First let me say, I am glad that the oriental adventure books lacked historical accuracy and realism, since I wanted Wuxia and stereotype in my asian adventures. Second, more interesting to me than the cobbled setting you would get (as someone pointed out, Ancient Rome, Medieval England, etc...

Rant -- GM Control, Taking it Too Far?

If the DM is using his own campaign world, no reason why he can't remove races. I have played in all human settings before. This sort of move doesn't usually make many waves in most groups. One of the things that makes different settings unique is how they treat the various races. I do not think...

Rant -- GM Control, Taking it Too Far?

This is a difficult conflict to resolve because it boils down to taste, expectations and campaign style. Personally I don't have a problem with a player giving his 'pets' silly names, since people have always given them silly names. That said, I did notice that some of you choices are a little...

HTWMDS - Does Greater Strength Make You Better at Hitting Things?

I don't dispute that skill has a bigger role. And D&D's level system gives greater primacy to skill. But I am saying that Strength makes hitting someone effectively much easier than something like Dexterity. Since the original question here seemed to be "is strength the best stat to use for...
