HTWMDS - Does Greater Strength Make You Better at Hitting Things?

Do you mean the emphasis on skirmish battles and individual combat manuevers over larger movement of troops, and the layout of the battle field?

HTWMDS - Does Greater Strength Make You Better at Hitting Things?

The hit point system in D&D doesn't seem to prevent this. There are also plenty of combat options in 3E, and 4E allows for lots of ways to manipulate the battle field Neither makes a very good war game however. Is there something specific that bothers you about either system when it comes to...

HTWMDS - Does Greater Strength Make You Better at Hitting Things?

I don't have really have an issue with HP in D&D. In other games I would. But D&D is about heroes and high fantasy. Having high hit points is a great way to keep the major players on the field despite heavy damage.

HTWMDS - Does Greater Strength Make You Better at Hitting Things?

These are all very valid points, and I don't dispute any of them. But I have to wonder if they apply mostly to modern combat. I am just having trouble picturing a medieval-style warrior, worrying about putting his opponent at opportunity disatvantage. Also, I don't dispute the value of skill...

HTWMDS - Does Greater Strength Make You Better at Hitting Things?

I think he is saying it is just a game. And Strength makes enough sense that it shouldn't be a problem. It is important to remember, that no matter what physical stat you use to determine how well someone hits in melee, there are going to be problems. There is also the need to balance...

HTWMDS - Does Greater Strength Make You Better at Hitting Things?

but, but, but there is no sound in space... I agree. This is one of the least attractive tendancies you find in gaming, and one that great shows like the simpsons has lampooned over and over for good reason. Its a game, and it is pretty pointless debating how realistically the stats are...

HTWMDS - Does Greater Strength Make You Better at Hitting Things?

You make some interesting points. What is your background? I agree, and in my post I mentioned fighting with a knife is a whole different ball game than say a bat. But I think most of your example applies to stealth weapons like knives. I have some experience with training in knife combat (no...

HTWMDS - Does Greater Strength Make You Better at Hitting Things?

I agree size is important, but I think D&D makes use of it in a broad sense, particularly 3E. It justn't doesn't make a mechanical distinction sizes within each size category.

HTWMDS - Does Greater Strength Make You Better at Hitting Things?

This is a really good point. Strength isn't just about brute force. It helps with other things like explosive energy, which is more about hitting something fast from a stationary position. And it is about athleticism overall. But I do think they factor in size with STR. Grappling is a good...

HTWMDS - Does Greater Strength Make You Better at Hitting Things?

I have many years of experience as a boxer, and in my experience strength+skill+hand eye coordination make you better at hitting other people with your fist. Why is strength important? A couple of reasons that are not immediately obvious. The first is explosive power from strength allows you to...

Market Research and Starting RPG Company

I am thinking of starting an RPG publishing company. This is a long term project that I do not want to rush into, so I need to do market research and develope a viable business plan before taking the plunge. Does anyone have advice on how to do effective market research, and where I can find...

    Any word on the GSL?

This may be a stupid question, but who has actually signed on to the GSL at this point? I was under the impression that the 3rd party publishers have just gone ahead and published without signing the GSL, on the grounds that you can't copyright a game. And, are the GSL terms as harsh as people...

What online tools should I build for you?

Honestly, I really would like an adventure and campaign designer program that actually look good and are easy to use. For example, something that not only does what I want, but can organize my material in a way that makes sense; also it should be able to print and look really sharp. There are...

    Art Recycling

Package and image matter. And when you get a lot of recycled art people read it as a negative. Not saying Wizards thinks its customers are stupid, but I think that is how a lot customers feel when companies do things like this. No. But of all the RPG companies out there, they should be the...

    Eliminating Eastern Flavor From D&D?

But both are deemed offensive when used to refer to a person, because it is very difficult to distinguish how it is being used. Both are supposed to be acceptable when used to refer to objects or concepts. However, I think tar baby is a word that is becoming more charged, and it is increasingly...

    Art Recycling

This bothers me for a number of reasons, and I don't think it is a shallow criticism either. Recycling art sends the message that they don't care about the quality of the product. Just like recycling text or letting in too many typos sends the message they don't care about the quality of the...

    Eliminating Eastern Flavor From D&D?

We have words for you as well. And up here we call it "the war to end slavery". I think we can all agree though that the black hole and niggardly incident were rather silly. The difference here is black hole and niggardly are not considered slurs in the US, but Oriental is most definitely...

    Eliminating Eastern Flavor From D&D?

I see. Here Said isn't widely read either. The reason saying "Joe's Oriental" is offensive is because the old timers here used that word disparagingly. There used to be a good deal of racism against asians here because of the war with Japan ( I know you guys were in that war too, but my...

    Eliminating Eastern Flavor From D&D?

You have a good point, context matters. I think this may also be a US-UK thing, where here you really go out of your way to not to use the word oriental (my asian American friends have made it clear to me that calling a person oriental is a slur to them). Perhaps in the UK the term is less...
