    Eliminating Eastern Flavor From D&D?

I started out on 1E and 2E (came in at the tail end of 1st edition), and tend to picture the gold dragon as the most powerful of the good dragons, and very western. Never really like the 3E presentation of them. But since this is a 3E discussion, I might have to concede the gold dragon. My...

    Eliminating Eastern Flavor From D&D?

All of my academic style guides say not to use the term oriental in reference to people. Also Oriental has been considered a slur for sometime by people in the Asian American community. It should also be noted that Said's ideas have gained accepted within most of the social sciences. You are...

    Street names?

I agree, this part of the country isn't as young as the west, and it is written in our roads, our homes, and churches.

    4E Ravenloft

I think this reflects a minority opinion among fans. Personally I never had any difficulty running full length campaigns. Most of the GMs I know who ran it never ran into any difficulty either. Sure. This is true, but I think you under estimate the amount of enthusiasm and sales it would...

    4E Ravenloft

I think you are right that the nature of 4E needs to be considered. It probably won't mesh as easily with a full fledged Ravenloft Setting as 3E or 2E; but it is still doable in my opinion. Say they do end up releasing a complete Ravenloft setting; from a marketing standpoint, is it really...

    Eliminating Eastern Flavor From D&D?

But it is an imaginary fantasy world where the evolution of real cultures need not matter. I have a degree in history, so it is important to me; but you have to recognize this isn't real world history. We are dealing with analogs that can develop every aspect of their culture independently. You...

    Eliminating Eastern Flavor From D&D?

Don't get me wrong, I am not promoting being PC about these kinds of things; but most style guides no longer use the term oriental to describe people. I also agree that precision is important, but because Oriental has evolved from its original meaning, which refered to anything beyond the west...

What makes a good campaign world?

I just checked out your blog; top notch. I'm suprised I never saw it before. I agree with your assesment of A World Lit only By Fire. Some other books I would recommend: The Voices of Morebath Witchcraft in Medieval Europe The Bewitching of Anne Gunther The Cheese and the Worms Night Battles...

    Eliminating Eastern Flavor From D&D?

Oriental no longer refers to the near east. The term slowly came to mean things in the far east. Also, it isn't currently used by most writers and academics as it is considered offensive because it doubles as an ethnic slur. I could be wrong, but my guess was he meant the far east, and not just...

    Eliminating Eastern Flavor From D&D?

Both actually. If he still wants the monk he could easily explain it as a western style mystic (though there was Middle Eastern influence there). Or you could simply say the katana was invented in the western analog kingdom. But he is also justified in removing anything he feels is asian...

    Eliminating Eastern Flavor From D&D?

My point wasn't about real world history, it was about the ability to imagine a Europe that developed independently from Asia. Just take away any asian style sections of the world, and have everything that would have been invented in those places, be invented by the western analog places.

But its a fantasy game, it can be anything the group wants. Plus it is a world completely seperate from our own, where history isn't rooted in the same past. It would be possible to conceive of a Europe that developed gunpowder, for example, on its own. A fantasy campaign setting does not...

    Eliminating Eastern Flavor From D&D?

Fair enough. I really should have reacted more softly. I think he is looking for a list of monsters as well. My guess is he means Asian when he says eastern, and by Asian I mean the American use of the term. There are tons of fantasy settings with no asian analogs. Since they don't follow...

    Tracking Alignment

I think with evil characters, especially evil paladins, the intent of their good deeds matter. For example, a really Paladin may come to the aid of a village in order to win their trust and exploit them later.
