Boston - tell me all about it

Just be aware, as someone already pointed out, there is a commuter rail system, a subway system and a bus system. I live just outside the reach of the subway system, so I need to drive to revere if I want to connect with it. But the commuter rail passes through my city (though it comes less...

    Confess your lack of taste

I laughed during meet the spartans. I felt bad about it afterwards. But I would be lying if I said I didn't have fun watching that movie.

Forked from "An Epiphany" thread: Is World Building "Necessary"?

First, I don't think there is a wrong way to world build. And I believe the level of detail for each world should vary depending on the players and the needs of the genre. But I have some basic observations. Is world building needed: For me this depends on the campaign. If its a dungeon...

RPG Industry News and Market Research

So I am trying to put together a workable business plan for a small game publishing company, and realize I need information. Does anyone know where I can get industry news, and market information at little to no cost?

Pathfinder 1E Paizo Announces New System for the Pathfinder RPG

I have been so busy, I forget it was the first of April. Well played. For a moment, I thought Paizo had gone nuts.

Boston - tell me all about it

This is much better than working in Boston proper (which is really expensive for parking). Malden actually has parking so you may be able to drive to work (which is much better than the MBTA). There are lots of nice communities around Malden. If you need something affordable, check out Lynn...

Boston - tell me all about it

Just my view, but I have lived in Massachusetts most of my life. First there is Boston and then there is Massachusetts. Boston doesn't much care for massachusetts, and massachusetts doesn't much care for boston. Boston isn't just the city proper, its the greater metro area as well. Its cold...

    Layout Software

I hadn't thought about this. I am still in the research phase and buisness plan building phase. So I want to stay flexible. I had thought, all I needed was layout software. I want software that will give me something I can hand to the printer and say, okay I want 1000 of these. Maybe there is...

PHB2 comes in at number 28 on USA Today top 150 list

I am mostly a fan of 3E over 4E; but why do people want 4E to fail. Clearly the books are doing well. Good. I hope they keep selling. Just because you like another game or edition doesn't mean you need to pray for 4E failure. Though it doesn't suit my gaming needs, I can admit its a good system...

    Layout Software

Thanks for the advice Urizen. I saw an ad for Adobe INdesign CS4 at 700$. Is it easy to use. A friend of mine recommended Quark, but he is in marketing for the security industry, so I expect he has much different needs. Do you have a specific reason for not using Quark tha much?

    Layout Software

I am getting into publishing and want to do the layout work myself. Can anyone recommend the best layout software out there that is also affordable? Any that I should avoid? Our products will be print, not PDF, if that makes any difference.

    Some Thoughts on Campaign/Game Design

The OP makes a bunch of good points, but the one about PC protection seems key; and this one has frustrated me as well. Personally, I think the threat of PC death, is what makes the game fun. If the DM is fudging to keep them alive, it ruins my enjoyment as a player (unless he is compensating...

    Confess your lack of taste

I loved starship troopers. One of those movies I can see again and again without getting bored. Lots of memorable scenes and funny dialogue. I liked that it took a chance and strayed from the book (heck I don't think the director even read the book!). Just stylistically this movie, along with...

    Confess your lack of taste

The OP has a point, and what is worse, its a two-tiered system. There are movies pop culture says you must like and hate, and there are movies high brow culture says you must like and hate. Same seems to work for music and literature as well. I grew up with music, played piano, guitar, the...

Fighters didn't matter after 11th level?

these are totally understandable concerns. And one of the reasons why I think the desire of the gaming group is paramount, and the needs of the genre style equally important. 3E doesn't work well with low magic without serious modifications. A toned down system that has weaker magic would work...

Fighters didn't matter after 11th level?

No. 3E is about builds and multiclassing. Players are rewarded for mastery of the system and clever use of resources. Some abilities are objectively better than others in certain sistuations for this reason. My point is, this is one approach and for some of us, it is fun. Are wizards better...
