Was there a TSR-made 3rd Edition? Forked Thread: Why THAC0 Rocks

I remember Alternity coming close. In that it was designed around a central die-roll mechanic. Or that is at least what I remember the designers saying about Alternity when it came out.

    Lorraine Williams did... what?

The problem with the fragmentation narrative is the different settings like Forgotten Realms, Ravenloft and Dark Sun were all wildly succesful. There was no fragmentation going on. It wasn't until the later half of the 90s, when TSR tried to beat out the card companies that they really ran into...

    GM Notes: Handwritten or Typed?

I used to hand write most of my notes, but I found typing them and putting them into a 3-ring binder helped me keep a better record of things. Also, its so much easier to read New Time Roman than my scrawl.

    Lorraine Williams did... what?

I have always been a little skeptical of the narrative of Lorraine Williams in the gaming community. It shouldn't be forgotten that early on, the company did well under her leadership, and that many of the factors (the sudden popularity of collectible card games like Magic-- I lost half my group...

    Job advice needed

Wait till you have an offer and don't say a word until you give your two weeks. You really need to look out for yourself and your Fiance; not the company you work for. I have made the mistake of being loyal to a company while eye other employment opportunities and paid the price. I lost the job...

Pathfinder on the bookstore shelves? Forked Thread: The 3.5 renaissance!

Interview definitely helped out Vampire. But then, we had a boom of movies around 2000 for fantasy; that must of helped D&D sales. And in the early 80s there was a fantasy boom, and I recall D&D being pretty huge then.

[Forked Thread: The 3.5 renaissance!] Three Years in the future - What will WotC do?

This isn't a bad idea. I remember I played a quazi-D&D board game before playing D&D, and it is what really got me interested (actually I think it was the old Lord of the Rings board game from the 70s, but I remember there usd to be a game called dungeon as well). Board game is an easy concept...

Pathfinder on the bookstore shelves? Forked Thread: The 3.5 renaissance!

I once built a house out of hate; with nails of spite, wood of scorn and bile-filled insulation. The forced hot air was fueled by jealousy, and the water table flooded the basement with vitriol. Inside all was badwrongfun! No edition was safe from out scorn!

Ancient aliens on the history channel. Arrrrghhh!

But we are educating our people to think critically; and these things are still having an impact. There are more classes on media availble in colleges today than ten years ago. And they are even teaching media criticism at the junior high and highschool level. In fact, I'd wager a bet that...

Ancient aliens on the history channel. Arrrrghhh!

To be fair they did present other opinions, but they skewed so that the opposing viewpoints appeared weak. This guy has been around forever, claiming mainstream academia won't take his views seriously. When his "research" is really just a rehash of some pop-books that came out years before. The...

3.5 high level woes and Paizo's hand in it.

Here are the key things to my enjoyment of 3E: 1) Flexible Mutliclassing System- For me, this is what 3E was all about. Being able to take a level of fighter here, a level of rogue there, etc; without too much difficulty. 2) Skill Ranks and plenty of Skills- I like to play rogues, and I...

Ancient aliens on the history channel. Arrrrghhh!

This is the issue. There are places in the world where this is the case, and the results usually lead to greater degrees of racism, intolerance and willingness to fight the government. If you read Arabic Media for instance, conspiracy culture is mainstream. Something like 65% of Arabs believe...

    The 3.5 renaissance!

And I think the reason is it was too soon. Like I said AD&D had a good 20 year run. And by its end, people were eager for a new system. People didn't really want a new system when 4E was released. What the game needed, wasn't a new edition. It needed a new direction and more quality in terms of...

Ancient aliens on the history channel. Arrrrghhh!

I see your point, and maybe I am over reacting. I just think conspiracy culture is dangerous. And a station like the history channel promoting it, irresponsible.

    Suprise U2 Concert in Boston

I heard this on the radio a few minutes ago. I have to go Somerville tomorrow, good thing it wasn't today. Lord knows what the traffic is like. By the way, Somerville has some kick ass restaurants. A pretty cool place to go, whether U2 is there or not. But this is a nice suprise.

3.5 high level woes and Paizo's hand in it.

CRs were kind of useless in 3E. But most methods for creating balanced encounters are flawed. THis is something that GMs need to experiment with on their own in a way. CRs are great guide posts, but like you say, sometimes really weak multiclassed foes, or templated monsters end up with CRs that...
