    'Pi Day' - D&D Style!

22/7 is a close approximation to the true Pi day.

    D&D 5E (2014) Speculating about the future of the D&D industry/community in a post-5E world

It's also an increasing feature of the modern world from social media to politicised TV "news" stations. People increasingly tend to interact with and gather information - and a world view - only from people with whom they already have much in common.

    D&D 5E (2014) Equipment posted~ pics

I agree that the illustrations are very nice. Also, the rules seem clear and to the point. However, my inner pedant finds the use of the verb "to fire" rather grating. Also, it only now dawns on me that abolition of grids and squares means we have to deal with these odd foot/feet things. I...

    I Am Puzzled

I agree. I think it's an example of dissassociated mechanics that some people, including me, can't get past. "Casting a Fireball" directly links what the player says is happening to what the character is doing. Somehow saying I cast a Fireball when "Fireball" is mechanically an arbitrary cool...

    I Am Puzzled

Ahem! Saddle. I agree. It's an attempt to fix a small system that is seen as unfair because of the otherwise randomness of game starting points. It then complicates into a mess of trying to give sensibly quantified points of measured or perceived benefits. It's an accelerator on the optimise...

D&D 5E (2014) Mike Mearls did an interview for Escapist Magazine and reveals PHB classes, races, and much more

Did anyone else notice this ... Dynamic Basic D&D It seems that Basic D&D is a updated summary product. A reason for new adopters to be returning to the site for the latest updates - and drawn towards upgrading to the core books (?).

D&D 5E (2014) Better pics from PAX East

I like the useful handles to help rip this guy's head off - or break his neck from the impact of bashing them with pretty much any weapon.

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore 03/24/2014

I suspect we may have fundamentally different ideas on what defines a game and gameplay that it won't be useful to tease out. However, I suggest that if I sat down with my kids, or some players, for some storytelling then seeing the story develop would be the reward - as you say. I agree that...

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore 03/24/2014

Actually, general ability pool points are a limited resource in GUMSHOE so it is certainly possible to play it as a resource management strand in parallel to the clue finding (story progression) of the investigative abilities. Are you saying that all there is to D&D is a resource based game? I...

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore 03/24/2014

Yes. But they aren't all players and there's no need to inflict their predilections on the incoming generation. In GUMSHOE, preparedness is a skill. Effectively, it's a limited number of points to be spent in an adventure. So, probably similar to your preferences.

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore 03/24/2014

Wouldn't the 21st century solution be to allow players to retrospectively declare what the character has when it's useful for the story? c.f. "Preparedness" in the GUMSHOE system.

Hillfolk: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/robindlaws/hillfolk-dramasystem-roleplaying-by-robin-d-laws I think 13th Age looks awesome - especially if you're a d20-ish kind of player who might like an injection of storytellfullness. I think Numenera will be a superb product that breathes...

How easy would it be to play Nights Black Agents in a play-by-post

How many RPGs do you own?

I was a 49 from a quick(ish) count around the bookshelves - then I remembered Ghostbusters is "somewhere safe" after seeing someone else's list. That counts Cthulhu Dark Ages, Cthulhu: Invictus even Delta Green (etc.) as one game even though I feel they are more like different games compared to...

D&D 5E (2014) New D&D Next Playtest Packet Is Here!

Very good. The thought I have watching this and my son fencing with sabre is the following. Do you/we really think that if either of these fighters moved their focus to have a quick poke (nay - a full attack) at a third person moving past them that they wouldn't be immediately hit by their...

Review of Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG by Goodman Games

And there has been quite a bit of lively debate of what “Old School” gaming is like, what it should be like, and what are its defining characteristics - a debate which has focused almost exclusively around the still developing Next edition of Dungeons & Dragons Well, er, actually, NO.

    The Playtest Agreement

Me too! I was intending to run for my family: wife and 2 kids. They really enjoyed the Pathfinder box I gave my son (10) for his birthday and my daughter (7) was incredibly excited and inventive when playing an elf. My wife would probably sign-up via WoTC if I ask but my kids (the next...
