    D&D 5E (2024) D&D species article

My own experience as belonging to multiple groups. I don't see that as less valid than other creatures and options among which people have been able to envision themselves or explore some semblance of identity through roleplay. While I understand the idea of "opening up" options by being able...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D species article

It's still a miss for me. Struggling with mixed heritage -being simultaneously both yet situationally neither- is a story to which I can relate. Given the focus on inclusivity for 5e24, it's a bit jarring to feel as though a piece of my own experience is deemed less important to the game as we...

    Worlds of Design: Not-So-Friendly Fire

For whatever it's worth, the other games I play that have rules for stuff like that don't have them in a vacuum. How combat works in general tends to be noticeably different from D&D. You're right that it is a viable tactic to spray ranged fire into a group of enemies. That's part of why...

    Worlds of Design: Not-So-Friendly Fire

In contrast, most of the non-d20 I games I play in which friendly-fire rules exist do rule it that way (and, yes, firing a volley into a large mass probably hits someone). Missing doesn't mean you automatically hit an ally. However, as this discussion is in the D&D section, that is likely...

    Worlds of Design: Not-So-Friendly Fire

I feel that options that carry both risk and reward are more tactically interesting. Ranged attacks have the reward of... well, range for starters. As D&D does not have ammunition load times (or other such rules,) I'm somewhat inclined to believe that removing most of the risks (as cinematic...

D&D General Words which replaced "race" in fantasy games

I appreciate the response. I suppose, from my own point of view, I am trying to understand what is considered "culturally correct" (for a lack of better words) when there is no (subjective) shared equity between two groups and trying to be more inclusive of one causes (subjective) harm to the...

D&D General Words which replaced "race" in fantasy games

What do you believe should happen when the subjective experience of one marginalized group conflicts with the subject experience of another marginalized group?

WotC D&D Historian Ben Riggs says the OGL fiasco was Chris Cocks idea.

I think it was obvious to everyone looking at it that there were signs of Cocks all over it from day one.

D&D 5E (2024) What is your oppinion of 5.24 so far?

Hard to tell. I don't know much about what (if any) the differences are in how encounter design and monster design works. The changes I've seen this far appear to be a mixed bag, but I don't really know without seeing how it all fits together. My initial perception is that the '24 version of...

D&D 5E (2024) Players Handbook 2024 Art and Design video from WotC

I'm not sure. I'd have to look at the books I have.

D&D 5E (2024) Players Handbook 2024 Art and Design video from WotC

Not necessarily. An index isn't just rules. It also is a reference for key topics, terms, and etc. If the book is able to provide the function of an index, cool; but the '14 versions struggled with that, so I'm not exactly enthusiastic about the idea of completely removing an index.

D&D 5E (2024) Players Handbook 2024 Art and Design video from WotC

I can understand the thinking from that point of view. However, given that 5e14's books weren't always intuitive for finding things, I would appreciate a (better) index.

Any pictures of an index? One of my biggest hopes for the new books is that they adequately function as actual physical books.

D&D General Weekend Fun: What Fantasy Movie Does Your Ideal D&D Campaign Look Most Like?

Dragonslayer is almost the perfect movie representation of an adventure arc.

Spoilers The boys Season 4 (spoilers)

I could possibly see the end of The Boys being Homelander fully cracking and embracing the role of god-tyrant. Then spinoffs like Gen V could have him as an ominous offscreen threat. That's not how I actually see the show going, but I could buy that as a compelling story.

    D&D 5E (2024) Class Iconic Art in the 2024 Player's Handbook

Are Genasi still a thing in 5e24? Seems as though Goliath may be stealing some of the Genasi vibe.

D&D General On Early D&D and Problematic Faves: How to Grapple with the Sins of the Past

From my own personal perspective, I'm not sure if that type of cycle ever completely ended. The color of political tie worn by the people pushing the cycle forward may have changed, by the end results of the cycle haven't changed much. Anecdotally, being a fan of tabletop games (and video games)...

D&D General On Early D&D and Problematic Faves: How to Grapple with the Sins of the Past

I remember some of the Satanic Panic. I was young, but I remember that it forced the local Toy'R'Us to take D&D off their shelves. (There was no local gaming store at that time; now this area has 3.) I can agree with the standards being internalized to an extent. That's part of why I chose...

D&D General On Early D&D and Problematic Faves: How to Grapple with the Sins of the Past

I agree that context is important. Though, my perception (based upon recent threads both here and elsewhere) is that tabletop games may face a different standard than other media/art.

    D&D 5E (2024) Class Iconic Art in the 2024 Player's Handbook

Have giants had a surge in popularity during 5e? Goliaths always had a bit of a connection to giants, but it appears that they are now the giant-descended version of Dragonborn. The art is high quality. It's a bit too clean and digital-looking for my personal tastes, but they are mostly good...
