D&D General On Early D&D and Problematic Faves: How to Grapple with the Sins of the Past

I'm inclined to feel similarly. I have no empirical data to compare, but my guess would be that some overlap exists between people who play tabletop D&D and people who would play a D&D based video game. In one context, content is deemed a reason to not buy something and may even be a reason...

D&D General On Early D&D and Problematic Faves: How to Grapple with the Sins of the Past

I think that's a fair assessment from the point of view of a potential publisher. From my own perspective, it's interesting to be having this discussion about D&D while also playing through Balder's Gate 3. Larian constructed a narrative that makes use of adult-themed material as well as some...

D&D General On Early D&D and Problematic Faves: How to Grapple with the Sins of the Past

A question I often ponder: Does a topic being "problematic" (or other term you'd prefer to use) necessarily mean that including the same topic in a game makes the game "problematic"? For example, let's use sexism, as that is related to the Gygax discussion. I may be mistaken, but I feel...

Thank you. How many experience points is that worth?

And yet, as evidenced by my agreeance with the overall point, I have demonstrably not missed what was being said. As said previously, multiple things can be true at the same time. I completely disagree with your assessment of my viewpoint. Context does matter.

I think that's fair. And I agree that it does not render the larger point moot. Gygax himself claimed to have sexist views. I don't see any reason to not believe his own words regarding that matter. At the same time (and despite personally never meeting the man,) I think it's a fair...

D&D Historian Benn Riggs On Gary Gygax & Sexism

I addressed both the piece and the viewpoint as a whole; as the conversation is about how an individual overlaps (or doesn't) with a multifaceted body of work produced in part by said individual, I surmise that some level of nuance has merit. In addition, I posit that leading with a weak...

Does a multiclass sorcerer apply the SoRage to non-sorcerer spells?

Yes, you are not being oppressive... and finding joy... As well as calling out things. Finding balance between the two: exactly as I said. I'm not fully understanding your point of contention. Edit: To add the relevant quote from my previous comment. "Certainly, call out offense and harm...

Sure, but the contents of disparate parts are not necessarily synonymous with the whole of a particular composition.

Very true. Though, it could be read that those comments were contextually in response to there being one sole queen (especially given the surrounding social conversations taking place at that time) rather than being meant to disparage the gender as a whole. Does that absolve Gygax of sexism...

And I support that choice. What I wrote was more than one paragraph and the entirety of the message was written to be the entirety of the message. That being said, I also understand that it is not unusual for a person reading something to read it differently than an author may have meant it...

There are plenty of ways. It could be read in its entirety. It could be cut into snippets and read. It could be read with a variety of assumptions about who I am or preconceived notions about what a reader assumes I mean -or not. I'm sure there are others. What way makes you feel the best?

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Sorcerer"

I think it would have been cool if some of the sorcerer features from the early 5e playtests would have come back. I think that I like the improvements, but it's hard to tell. I'm not entirely sure what the sorcerer's identity is supposed to be when standing beside both the warlock and the wizard.

If someone wants to read it that way, they will, and that's part of the point I was making.

I'd have to see the "rage" in actual play to fully judge, but the description seems a bit meh. The changes to wild magic seem good.
