Can I just ask did you do the Dark Sun conversion I saw on Reddit a while back? If it was you then I sent you a big salute and much appreciation. It’s a great piece of work.

    Wheel of Time S3

It’s the consciousness raising bit that makes you see everything in a new light and really illuminated the cosmic scale of the series. Hopefully they do it justice.

    D&D 5E (2024) Is a heavy armored monk feasible?

Maybe the bigger question would be, what do you gain by being a monk? Ki abilities?

D&D General What Does New Coke Tell Us About Designing for D&D

I first learnt about the importance of passion when reading Jack Welch’s book. He said: “People with passion have a heartfelt, deep, authentic excitement about work. They care–really care in their bones–about colleagues, employees, and friends. They love to learn and grow, and they get a huge...

The second bit… though less people will buy it… is the rub.

D&D General What Does New Coke Tell Us About Designing for D&D

Surely a good rule costs the same as a bad rule. Or are you frustrated that 5e is too popular and you would prefer it was more to your taste even if less people would buy it?

D&D General What Does New Coke Tell Us About Designing for D&D

I think it’s easy to get cynical but passion makes a huge difference to a persons ability to do the job! I genuinely believe if you don’t love your job (or at least 66% of it) then you’ll never be as good at it as you could be. I’ve seen team become extremely passionate about their jobs...

    D&D 5E (2024) Is a heavy armored monk feasible?

I just can’t quite get past the unarmed attack bonus action, the martial arts die, the fast movement, acrobatic movement and the dexterous attacks. That is such a lot to give up, even if unarmoured defence gets balanced out by the armour. Now barbarian in heavy armour I think works fine.

D&D General What Should Magic Be Able To Do, From a Gameplay Design Standpoint?

I guess that’s what I was trying to say. It’s all relative. But you are right it might just be an increase in meaningful strikes. I could put it another way. A 6th level fighter could kills 6 different foes in 6 seconds, which is a bit more awesome!

D&D General What Should Magic Be Able To Do, From a Gameplay Design Standpoint?

I’m pretty sure an attack isn’t a single strike. It represents the number of strikes a character can make in the time period. Otherwise a level 1 fighter is striking once every 6 seconds which doesn’t make sense. When that 5th level fighter attacks 6 times its delivering 6 times as many strikes...

D&D General What Should Magic Be Able To Do, From a Gameplay Design Standpoint?

Can this not be done to a certain extent already? A 4th level Fighter could quick as lightning interpose their shield in front of a friend to force disadvantage on the attacker or get a free attack on the attacker reducing them knocking them to the ground and preventing them getting back up… as...

D&D General What Should Magic Be Able To Do, From a Gameplay Design Standpoint?

To be honest I wasn’t correcting you. I did think Gobhag was referring to the current edition and it would need work to match 5e. Iirc the powers would be considered underwhelming compared to what the fighter can do now even though back then it was revolutionary. Now fighters have oodles of...

D&D General What Should Magic Be Able To Do, From a Gameplay Design Standpoint?

Book of Nine Swords sound right up @GobHag ‘s alley. If I recall it sat on top of the 3e chassis. I’m sure it could be adapted to sit a top 5e as well. Depends if their DM agrees with @GobHag though I guess. If it’s all so reasonable and obvious, presumably they will.

D&D General What Should Magic Be Able To Do, From a Gameplay Design Standpoint?

Surely even in Anime there’s some kind of supernatural reason people can teleport or explode? Monkey fruit, a daemonic arm, vampire bloodline etc etc. Are the really anime productions where a normal guy can teleport through space because of his skill? Let’s be clear I have no problem with...

D&D General What Should Magic Be Able To Do, From a Gameplay Design Standpoint?

They weren’t dismissed. I just pointed out the irony in asking for something that was already in the game. Playable now. They’re quite capable of making their point irrespective of mine.

Nevertheless it’s really important that to note there are ways for fighters to do the majority of those things right now in the game. Fighters, rogues, rangers, paladins. This is not about fighting characters not being able to things things it’s about the package they’re wrapped up in.

D&D General What Should Magic Be Able To Do, From a Gameplay Design Standpoint?

I don’t know how else to say this. The technology level of a world is a setting issue. The D&D rules can’t bake in belonging to academia because some worlds aren’t going to have academia. I think you need to take two steps back and realise that people aren’t saying that magic is a science - but...
