Because at casting the higher slot spells takes some resource away from lower level spells. Both in terms of slots and in terms of prepared spells.

I don’t think the bladesinger is even coming close to the damage that a barbarian can do unless it uses its higher level spell slots.

T While the bladesinger is trying to use all its spell slots to absorb damage that the Barbarian can do without spending a resource, the barbarian is hitting things extremely hard which again costs no resources.

Not so because the barbarians power isn’t limited to a single damage source per round which the bladesingers power is. The barbarian is also getting to ignore being dropped to 0 hp and instead gets healed.

Sorry I was referring to your statement that they can tank the 185 hp extra. If you’re using spell slots for other things then you’re not tanking 185 hp. Every time you’re doing something meaningful you’re reducing that total.

It’s weak because the blade singer isn’t doing anything else in order to absorb those hp. While the Barbarian gets to act normally and still be tough.

The section you quoted about action economy didn’t mention false life, mage armour or shield. They are only the very basic protections that do not make you tougher or harder to hit than other characters. Those spells just bring you up to a base acceptable level that most other characters get...

D&D General Favorite Less Used Low CR Creatures?

The funny thing is, so many of these ‘lesser used’ creatures mentioned are the staples of published adventurers.

Oh wow. I can see how casters ended up at the top now. The author assigns S tier points when the wizard gains new spell levels, despite the fact that you get diminishing returns. Yeah, that seems like a fundamental flaw in the gradings.

D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Class Rankings (from nat1gaming.com) for ppl who believe that stuff.

I think that there are four elements that people usually forget when comparing casters abilities. Particularly with simplistic comparisons like in the list above. The first problem is that when wizards try to do what you describe it destroys their action economy. Yes it is true that casters can...

I think you mean more difficult to hit. Though as monster Attack bonuses increase faster than AC it gets to a point where being able to half the damage of every attack is a huge boon.

The list is very superficial. It seems to ignore the fact that the barbarian is one of the best classes at taking physical damage. Amazingly so. The other thing that gets ignored is a class’ ability to utilize the full range of action economy. Bonus and reactions. Rogues, monks, fighters can do...

I get the theory. I just just don’t agree with with it. The ability to deal and the ability to resist physical damage is still the king ability in D&D. Most reliable. Most used and the only thing that can actually end a PCs career. Magic is useful but mainly superfluous. It makes things easier...

How likely are you to use D&D for your next game?

That is the challenge and why a bit of time/money is worth spending on marketing. Because if you can’t summarize it with a few sentences to appeal to folks then it is far less likely to sell. For instance Micah Sweet suggested Level Up is a crunchier version of 5e. Not sure if it is or not, but...

D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Class Rankings (from nat1gaming.com) for ppl who believe that stuff.

The problem is when a ranking basically says magic is everything, the classes with the most magic will be at the top. Unfortunately if you don’t think that magic is the only thing that matters there isn’t really anywhere to go with the discussion. There’s no other nuance to it really. The...

How likely are you to use D&D for your next game?

There is a difference between marketing and advertising. Marketing is really important for all products irrespective of the size of the brand. I’m not going to try a product unless it interests, excited and inspires me. For that they need to do a bit more marketing. The greatest failure of...

I play Monday and Wednesday nights and then every month we also do a two day gaming weekend. So average is about 2 1/2 sessions a week.

What VTT(s) do you most dislike and why? (Defenders welcome to defend)

I restrict my modules to mainly cosmetic ones, hover over tokens, nice dice rollers etc. I also mainly play WFRP on Foundry because the support is excellent. The bigger issue is the basic use of of items to drive everything in the system. It feels clunky. Roll20 seemed much simpler from that...

How likely are you to use D&D for your next game?

Fascinating survey that seems to seriously buck the trend that folks on this site mainly play 5e. Struggling to get my head round that as the topic of conversations seems to suggest otherwise.

WotC Mike Mearls: "I Was Not Fired From D&D"

It was actually Chris Perkins Dice Camera Action, nothing to do with Jem. Not that the scandal had anything to do with Chris either.
