D&D General Drow & Orcs Removed from the Monster Manual

I think there is a simpler issue at hand here. It doesn’t make sense to divorce mechanical differences (stats) from playable races on one hand and then create monster manual entries pretending those races are fundamentally different from each other… or worse undo the position you made in the PHB...

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

I agree the sentiment is widespread. Some of that is because a lot of folks (not you) aren’t necessarily aware of where money comes from. They don’t understand the concept of return on investment and have unreasonable expectations.

What do you mean? Different how?

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

Do you not think the books stand on their own merit? If you hadn’t played D&D before and were buying for the first time would you not think the books were worth their price tag? The core books are made for everyone new players and old. I just want them to make the best version of the game they...

And nevertheless publically owned companies make longterm investments all the time. Many of the reasons Apple, Amazon, Tesla etc are where they are now is because the took out huge investments of their own. Every time Amazon spends megabucks to buy a company it’s a short term pain for what they...

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

I’m interested in why people are so down on the recent WotC products? Planescape seems like a really solid set. I’m a massive fan of Golden Vault having run several of the adventures in it. I’m a player in Vecna now and we’re having a great time with the nostalgia appeal. Is there an...

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

I guess there is a deeper question beneath all of this which possibly goes a long way to informing how people feel about WotC. Is it fair that WotC try to increase monetization the D&D brand? Pro’s WotC bailed out TSR when they were at their lowest ebb saving the game from obscurity. They...

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

I suspect that there are many reasons the D&D movie didn’t do so well. Suggesting that it was because of the OGL simply because of the timing probably doesn’t hold up for me. Changes to cinema habits post Covid, the rise of box office streaming, competition are all reasons why an otherwise good...

Me too. The Blood War helps explain why the upper and neutral planes aren’t beset by legions of demons and devils trying to conquer Arcadia or Mechanicus. If it was, then the 1st levels of those planes at least would feel love very different places. War itself is an evil and it means Avernus can...

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

Yeah, I don’t see it either. How times have changed. Strange to think there was a time under WotC when players could drain the souls of a few children for XP and healing, while having a fulfilling conversation with your cancerous tumor and sticking pins through your genitals for an AC boost...

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

They released the Book of Vile Darkness. But no, I don’t think they would. Nobody wants to publish a book where bears have sex with tiny elf maidens. Or rather those that want to, aren’t allowed to.

It’s possible for growth to slow without the player base or sales declining. 3% growth is less than 25% but it’s still growth. I wasn’t talking about the commercial success of the film. I don’t worry about such things post Covid. I was talking about how well received it was and 90%+ RT scores...

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

I must say I’m confused about the take. Firstly - and I don’t think this can be overstated - guys in their mid to late forties are not in a position to say whether anything is cool or not in society. And that’s me speaking as a guy in my mid forties. Secondly. Have I been asleep or did we not...

WotC 5E Designer Mike Mearls Talks About The OGL Crisis

As much as I loved Pathfinder, cloning the rules wholecloth with a few modifications may have been as designed by Ryan Dancy but I can understand why WotC wouldn’t be fans of it in hindsight. I’m not sure the idea that the OGL protected ‘true’ D&D from meddling holds up. First you’d have to...

WotC 5E Designer Mike Mearls Talks About The OGL Crisis

I appreciate that there was huge content when the edition was out. I was referring to now, current times? Where are these folks selling new products designed for 3e stuff years later. [Edit: I take @Alzrius ’s point about 1e. Though if 1e can be retroactively generated from 3e, I don’t see why...

WotC 5E Designer Mike Mearls Talks About The OGL Crisis

I get that it is technically different. What meaningful difference does that make though? Was there a slew of D&D 3e adventures or products that I’m not aware of? If anyone not able to publish what they want for 5e?

    D&D 5E (2014) Which 5e Should I Propose to My Group? [Updated]

Swallow your distaste and go for 2024. It’s like 5e but better. Eventually you have to stop looking back.

People are still making many many 5e adjacent products. Has that slowed down at all? Doesn’t seem so to me.

    What's your VTT of choice?

I think there are a couple of features or modules on Foundry that are the opposite of immersion breaking. Firstly multi-level tokens. It allows you to be seen in two places of the map if a room spans two stories which is very useful. It also lets people teleport the token then they go up or...
