The D&D 4th edition Rennaissaince: A look into the history of the edition, its flaws and its merits

4e slaughtered too many sacred cows too quickly to ever be a true successor to what was an excellent 3rd edition. The scope and breadth of changes made previous edition switches look like a light polish. Ultimately it tried to change too much too fast and lost the goodwill of a large slice of...

The D&D 4th edition Rennaissaince: A look into the history of the edition, its flaws and its merits

You’re in luck. The pdf beta for Pathfinder was released in August 2008. 2 months after the 4e core books released. I checked my old forum posts on Paizo’s and it went off like a rocket.

The D&D 4th edition Rennaissaince: A look into the history of the edition, its flaws and its merits

Matey, I played the beta, it came out well over a year before release. We were playing Pathfinder off a full pdf of the rules in Aug 2008. It wasn’t just being talked about. It was out in the field.

What’s good about Call of Cthulhu 7th Ed? (and what’s not)

Does Arkham Horror require very tightly curated encounters and scenarios to work? Do you have to design encounters to work in the system or can it handle easy conversion? I have the adventure selected. I’m wary about converting a system I don’t know well to another system I don’t know well...

What’s good about Call of Cthulhu 7th Ed? (and what’s not)

Thank you for the info! Very useful. How easy is it to die? Are players pretty fragile and are there balance issues between say soldiers and actors? Where the latter has much less impact? Also, have you seen the Pulp rules? I’ve read a lot of the stories but some of my players main experience...

    D&D 5E (2014) Building A Campaign Around The BBEG

In terms of what the wizard king would do to maintain power and exert their influence you could do worse than look at the Sorcerer Kings of Athas. They are the pinnacle of magical tyranny and there are lots of examples of how they keep the people under control. In fact when you were first...

What’s good about Call of Cthulhu 7th Ed? (and what’s not)

Hey folks. Trying to learn Call of Cthulhu 7th Ed. Never played before but very familiar with the mythos (stories, entities, tropes). What is good about the game/edition? What is really good fun? What are the hardest things to adjust to but work when you grasp them? What just doesn’t seem to...

D&D 5E (2014) Lycanthrope Player Characters - How Would YOU Do It?

I personally think a combination of adjustments is the way forward to cover the basis. With minimal changes. Custom species to give Darkvision, perhaps base 13 armour level when unarmoured, and the ability to speak with animals of their type. Subclasses - to add some werewolf punch with some...

    D&D 5E (2024) What's Your 2026 WotC D&D Wishlist?

There is a great Pathfinder 3pp Adventure Path called Way of the Wicked which is easy to convert to 5e and does exactly this. It details a party of forsaken criminals and heretics destroying and eventually taking over the kingdom. Full of all the advice you’re talking about. I’m running it for...

How open are you to trying new systems?

I put somewhat open. We’ll do it, but it’s got to be worth it. Must be significantly different from what we already play to make it worth the switch. Tinkering around the edges won’t cut it. Must be properly supported with full Foundry (Roll20 at a pinch) Must be inspiring. A beautiful and...

    D&D 5E (2014) What's on your 5E 3rd Party Essential List?

Honestly none. However I find many 3pp adventure paths to be excellent so I often have a 3pp book out. Highlights that I have personal experience of Scarlet Citadel Dungeons of Drakkenheim Odyssey of the Dragonlords Kingmaker 5e Tales of the Old Margrave Rappan Athuk Slumbering Tsar I’ve...

    D&D 5E (2024) What's Your 2026 WotC D&D Wishlist?

What are the primary reasons your players reject other systems/settings/games?

Ah, I see. The way that ‘resistance to change’ was phrased seemed a bit negative. I think it’s possible to be open to change but still really enjoy the system you’re using. updated the vote. I would second the idea that VTT support makes a massive difference for me. I would probably convert an...

There doesn’t seem to be an option for really enjoying the system you’re currently using? Which would be one of my reasons.

Looking for advice on starting a store & initial inventory

A lot will depend on what country you are in? This advice is based on England, may not apply everywhere. You probably have this covered already. But on the coffee side of things, there are some very good auto-grind push button espresso machines. You don’t want to be banging handles around and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Don't Throw 5e Away Because of Hasbro

My help? I buy there stuff because it’s great fun. Not because of allegiance. I actually disagree. I think once you start to differentiate you either narrow that divide or continue off in your direction. 15 years ago Paizo got away with it because they were semi official and the natural...
