D&D 5E (2024) Using general Feats when your ability is already 20

I think I am just going to go with RAW. He can take the feat but does not get any +1.

But the reverse is even more true - putting the extra +1 on an ability they rarely use is noticable even less and in some cases not at all. Put the +2 on Constitution and the +1 on Charisma and now you have 15 and 19 for the first 3 levels instead of 14 and 20. Then for the next the next 17...

The 20 cap limits this though. It is marginally significant through 8 levels, but not after that when anyone on point buy can have a 20 in their preferred stat.

D&D 5E (2024) Using general Feats when your ability is already 20

I think the game is most fun when using the 1E Uneathed Arcana method for rolling. This leads to very high scores overall, but you don't choose where to put your highest score. You pick your class and then roll different numbers of dice depending on the class choice but you can't change your...

Then they are notably weaker for the first 3 levels, and not a whole lot stronger for the remaining 17.

D&D 5E (2024) Using general Feats when your ability is already 20

I would disagree with this IME. The "starring role" is based mostly on the player, not the character. Familiarity with the rules, creativity, the degree to which the player can think on their feet and the players personality in terms of being an introvert or extrovert is the primary driver in...

D&D 5E (2024) Using general Feats when your ability is already 20

I would disagree with this, the entire game is designed around rolling dice and the PHB includes three options for abilities, including rolling. A natural 18 is a clear possibility, more common than a critical hit and logically your highest stat is where your +2 is usually going to go. I have...

D&D 5E (2024) Not a fan of the new Eldritch Knight

The main problem with PAM that early is it boosts Strength or Dex while Shilleleagh is using Intelligence. Going with a straight standard Fighter PAM build to Strength 20 does substantially better damage at level 7 leaving Intelligence at 16, especially when you consider you don't pay the bonus...

D&D 5E (2024) Hunter's Mark, Hex, and the illusive balance

As I said earlier, I am generally opposed to most of the "fixes" and would instead prefer they deemphasize the spell in the class mechanics. Just make it another 1st level spell - use it if you want to. That said, this is a really elegant solution, even at unlimited uses a day like Armor of...

D&D 5E (2024) Using general Feats when your ability is already 20

Can you still use a feat when your ability score is already 20 in the ability you want to take the feat in? One of the PCs (Warlock) in a game I am DM for started with a 20 Charisma at level 1. They just turned level 4 and he wants to take the Telekenetic feat, but he can't take a Charisma...

D&D 5E (2024) Not a fan of the new Eldritch Knight

I agree on all that, the main point I was making is that below level 11 there will be minimal if any increase in damage through Shilleleagh. While it may come out a couple points ahead on paper the necessary use of your bonus action to start combat will eliminate that small advantage in play by...

D&D 5E (2024) Psionics: What Do You Want?

I would prefer no psionics at all, but if we are going to have it making it a spell caster seems the best way to go.

D&D 5E (2024) Not a fan of the new Eldritch Knight

Shilleleagh does 3 more damage at level 7 than a Rapier without Vex. Rapier attack action 19 Intelligence, 16 Strength: Attack 1d8+3, Truestrike 1d8+1d6+4, Total damage 4.5+3+4.5+3.5+4=19.5 Shillelagh attack action 19 Intelligence: attack 1d10+4 Truestrike 1d10+1d6+4, Total damage...

Good but better with heavy armor. Also if 1 point of AC is not a big deal, then instead of PAM if you get Dual Wielder and Heavy Armor you can have the same AC as that half plate+shield guy while having 2 more attacks (one more than the PAM guy) and you can get 2 more attacks from round 1 if...

    D&D 5E (2024) Chance for a warlord?

Meh. I am not for any more non-magic classes. I am not a huge fan of the idea of the psion but I am happy that they at least made it a caster with most of its "stuff" spells.

An extra turn is the difference between 2-3 turns and 3-4 turns. That is like a 35% boost in DPR.

D&D 5E (2024) Not a fan of the new Eldritch Knight

I think you should build Intelligence first. Your strongest attack from level 7 on uses Intelligence, not dex. I think either Dex or strength is more important than constitution though. Strength gives you better Armor without a movement penalty, lets you use heavy weapns and given the choice...

Yes you lose against the high-level, high initiative bosses, but without dexterity you also lose at lower level against all kinds of creatures and at higher level to the bosses minions.

I don't know that it is that important at all, especially with the new indomitable. I would definitely prioritize the feats that boost your spellcasting stat that you are using with your most effective attack first.
