It seems exactly like that kind of case to me? I get the cook wasn't introduced at the same moment the hard move occurs, but making the process into 2 steps by first introducing the cook and then a hard move with the cook doesn't actually solve the issue I'm describing - though it does make for...

D&D 5E (2014) Battlemaster and Superiority Dice are causing martials to suffer.

There's some really straightforward masteries like graze or cleave. So IMO, it's still possible to do simple, and never really was optimal to do so.

No. That's the purpose of life :)

And I'm positing that optimal play from a game perspective would be to use Discern Realities as little as possible. Now maybe it's that there are cases where invoking that move more often can actually increase your chances for success, but it's certainly not clear why that would be the case...

I think the stakes are rarely clear due to downstream effects of any decision and die roll. I get that. Some of us view soft moves into hard moves as doing exactly this.

You're the expert. Why the heck would you need to run the game to talk about such a scenario?

Providing a list of reasons the player may do something, doesn't answer a question about the game incentive for doing it. Not all reasons a player does something are based on game incentives and that's fine, but my question is specifically about the game incentives in the context of a specific...

So you can tell us we did it wrong the moment what we do deviates from what you do? This isn't just idle speculation, it's happened before, so Nah. You're the resident expert here on those games and I trust you know exactly how the mechanics work. But you're not the expert on interpreting...

Overall I like this post. Let me try to bring up a few of the things people just aren't getting. 1. I think there is some misunderstanding about what you mean by implicit. For us, the idea of kitchen in the house is implicit and that attempting to break into the house at an unspecified time...

    D&D 5E (2024) What's the best way to build a bladelock now?

I guess I should add, the single level fighter dip i think is ideal for a melee warlock, but you can definitely delay it till after level 5. Fiendish Vigor and Armor of Agathys should be plenty to carry you through early levels.

D&D 5E (2024) Just realized Sentinel is heavily nerfed! No longer works with PAM, no longer works on most enemies who Disengage.

That's fair. I would consider all of those things to be extremely rare for enemies. But sure, if they have them that is correct. It didn't work that way in 2014 either. As an example: An enemy is 15ft away. You have a reach weapon and sentinel. The enemy disengages and moves such that he...

    D&D 5E (2024) What's the best way to build a bladelock now?

Random thoughts. My ideal 2024 Warlock is just straight EB + Control/Summon spells. At level 4 take Spell Sniper so I can fire it into melee. An early game Melee Warlock with Armor of Agathys and the False life at will invocation will be a beast. 12 Temp hp that you can replenish at any time...

It never did. I just checked 2014 rules and the 5ft requirement for OA's on a Disengage action is there as well. I don't know that anyone ever actually played it that way though? The within 5ft of you was in my 2014 PHB. So apparently that part never worked with reach weapons. (y) You are...

IMO. What would be more helpful would be an example of breaking into the house and what would be the minimum requirements to narrate the cook screaming for help.

Looks to me like he’s citing a scenario. What the heck does it matter where the hypothetical scenario is from?

Right, it hinges on the explanation, not the authority.
