Five Takeaways From the 2025 Monster Manual

I know everyone is different, but in my style of play, the second roll, serving to build tension and have an active chance to avoid the effect (aside from just AC), is more valuable than the miniscule amount of time saved by not rolling more dice. In my experience, people like rolling dice!

D&D General 2nd edition player handbook class examples.

I guess the success of the examples depends on what you think they are supposed to do. If you think they are supposed to represent the exact characters of their type you can make, then yeah that’s a fail. If you think (as I do) that they are just familiar figures to help broadly inspire people...

D&D General How much do you care about rule change specifics?

I don’t get “upset,” but I do have preferences both for some grandfathered rules and for house rules we’ve been playing with no matter the edition. Anyway, as far as I’m concerned D&D is best when modular and home brewed.

D&D 5E (2014) Adjudicating Hide, You Decide Challenge!

It would seem silly to me to rule that the halfling has to be assumed to be "occupying the entire square" if he were not actually engaged with anyone that might cause him to move around the square during the fight. (And to be clear, I am a strong proponent for the idea that using a mini/token...

D&D 5E (2014) Adjudicating Hide, You Decide Challenge!

I know you mean specifically rulewise, but this is the kind of thing that falls into the "if I can imagine a skilled adventurer easily doing it, they should be able to at least try to do it, rules be damned" bucket. But if a character is standing in 5-foot square right by a corner (like the...

D&D 5E (2014) Adjudicating Hide, You Decide Challenge!

I know combat is turn-based, but everything is all happening at once or in very fast succession, so know the flow of events is crucial for me in making decisions on how to apply the rules. What the enemies have seen and what they know does not change or go away just because it is not their turn...

D&D 5E (2014) Adjudicating Hide, You Decide Challenge!

How I'd rule them really depends on if the enemies are already aware of the halfling when his round starts. I am gonna assume yes. Scenario 1: Enemy 1 can see the halfling clearly. The halfling has a degree cover against Enemies 2 and 3 depending on how the player describes how the halfling...

D&D General What races/species populate your DnD world?

I rolled the most open result in regards to choosing a species for my character in this game and could have choose nearly anything. I nearly did choose tortle. But I went human instead.

D&D General Vanity Frankenstein 5E: My homebrew D&D project [+]

I am hacking at the Encumbrance rules again, to try to simplify and abstract it even further. I have been discussing them over on the Discord for Mearls's patreon. It is a Gear Slot system, like before, but now it is mostly container based and includes "Negligible Items" which don't cost any...

D&D General What races/species populate your DnD world?

I usually start with the standard and add (or subtract) from there in terms of playable peoples (I use Peoples, instead of "race" or "species"). In terms of non-playable Peoples, I have a few I start with but will add more as needed for the scope and direction of the game. The setting I am...

    D&D 5E (2024) Species/Racial/Cultural Subclasses

I was always a fan of the 2E Kit, the Breach Gnome, which I later converted to a 3E Prestige Class. Basically, a gnome who specializes in defensive fighting, esp. in narrow spaces - usually to hold off enemies to allow the gnomes in their community to flee or prepare defenses.

D&D 5E (2024) "No magic items are necessary" vs Magic Items Awarded by Level

I don't pay attention to rarity, but 30+ magical items of any kind certainly seems excessive. My groups tend to end up with 3 to 5 various magical items by 10th level, which is where we usually stop. It is hard to tell with things like potions that get cycled through a lot - but even with...

D&D General What Bits of History Inspire Your Homebrew Setting?

Yes. I used the world "history" broadly when thinking of my responses, because I would include our historical understanding of culture and folklore into how history inspires, not just events. I also thinks history (whether real-world or stolen from fiction) is best mixed up and re-combined to...

D&D General What Bits of History Inspire Your Homebrew Setting?

The specific video I linked is about the Bronze Age Collapse, but his Roman History and other videos on political crises and processes have been invaluable to my world building more generally.

Do you watch the Historia Civilis YouTube channel? Anyway, I have a plan to incorporate elements of that (with a sneakier build up to the mass migration/assault).
