Sorcerer is set to stay, wince they ha eMetamagic as a Thing and a lot of momentum now. 2024 did quite a bit to boost Metamagic and make the Sorcerer feel like it fills the role of fictional magic like Channelling from Wheel of Time. Sorcerer's will stay in any future iteration.

Big issue with Psionics is that, yes, it was in every Edition...but each time was entirely different from every other time. Even 3.5 was a pretty major overhaul compared to the Core Classses. There simply isn't a "classic" to rally around.

They said in the UA playtest document that each Dragonmark is getting a Background, but for playtest purposes suggested using the 2019 "House Agent" Background.

That is not how other Backgrounds have worked: the implication is frankly that they intended 10 Wild Talent themed Backgrounds. At any rate, the Psion is probably a longer-term plan, since they are probably prepared for the scenario where it is rejected entirely.

@mearls actually got quite a bit into this in the Happy Fun Hour, when he prototyped one attempt at a Concentration-focused Psion. People didn't like the idea of new systems that were not transparent existing spellcasting structures, particularly DMs.

They said people soundly rejected the idea of an alternative mechanical system entirely, as DMs and players didn't want to learn another whole system. So the demand was for Psionics as Spells, for mechanical consistency.

Maybe not too much, too soon: Netflix announced they had secured the license for the Chronicles of Narnia seven years ago, and Greta Gerwig's Magician's Nephew isn't coming out till next year. Big sci-fi/fantasy stuff can take a while to cook for TV and film.
