    Heroes of the Elemental Chaos

Well, that's why I said "I think" that it will be coming out at GenCon 2013. I don't know of any official announcement. But my personal guess is that it will come out then. By the same token, saying that it will be "at least two years" until we're playing D&D Next in its official form is...

    Heroes of the Elemental Chaos

I agree that if you're having fun with 4e (as I am) that it makes sense to keep getting the material that looks fun to you (as I did with Heroes of the Elemental Chaos). But I think we have a year and a half until the new edition is out (GenCon 2013), not "at least two years". And keep in mind...

Adapting a Clone/ RPG for Kids

I'll assume you've already looked at RPG Kids and WotC's Heroes of Hesiod to see how others have presented similar material, but I thought I'd mention them just in case.

PAX East: DM D&D for WotC, get a free badge and/or hotel room!

So tempting! I wish there were a way I could get from Colorado to Boston easily; not this year, unfortunately.

    Heroes of the Elemental Chaos

I picked it up on Friday but have barely cracked it open yet since I'm prepping seven sessions for Genghis Con this weekend. I've love to read and review it, but I haven't gotten the chance and probably won't for another week or so.

    Is random good?

I like random treasure. I like random targets for certain enemies. I like rolling dice for their usual purposes. Beyond that, I haven't used a lot of randomness in my DMing so far, though I'm open to it. I don't think I like "random encounters" but that's because I play 4e where quickie...

    Do you mark your books?

I received a personalized embosser with my name and initials on it when I graduated from high school a long, long time ago. It came from a music teacher who I believe intended me to use it on sheet music. However, I'm not much of a musician any more, and the embosser sat unused in a drawer for...

WotBS Fantasy Grounds 2 Version of WotBS

I'm doing it in MapTool. The first adventure is in this thread: http://www.enworld.org/forum/en-publishing/315716-zeitgeist-maptool-file-adventure-one.html

Buy High, Sell Low is a Dumb Economic Model

I think I might have been unclear. I'm not saying you can't run a shop in D&D, or have economic negotiation be a meaningful part of the game. I'm saying that the rulebooks don't help you much on providing guidance to do so. A good DM can make up something that will be fun for all, of course...

The Crapification of Organized Play - Unavoidable?

Hm. My experience with organized play in the two years I've been involved has been really positive. Now granted, that's a small sample size both in time and location (most of that play has been at my FLGS, with some at local conventions and a little at GenCon last year), but it's been fun. It...

    4e Banquet Jouster Stats

I ad libbed the jousting stats when I ran the game. I believe I had the participants make melee basic attacks to reflect using a lance; if one hit and the other missed, the one who hit wins. The joust continued until one hit and one missed. I think I also had some options for the jousters...

    Banquet finale

I redesigned the trillith as a solo in the mold of Monster Vault dragons, giving her ways of shaking off negative conditions, for instance. I forgot to give her a way out of being immobilized, though, which was problematic. I had Gallo act heroic, spending his time trying to drag other nobles...

    Power vs. Options

I'd like a slight twist on Kzach's proposal: Higher level characters shouldn't have MORE options, but BETTER options. If characters get lots and lots of options, it leads to slowdown at the table as players sort through all of their options and try to decide which one to use. Swapping out a...

ZEITGEIST ZEITGEIST - OnlineDM's session recaps

I decided to finally start writing up my session recaps for ZEITGEIST. We just finished our third session last night, bringing us to the end of Adventure One, but I've only posted the recap of the first session so far. The second session recap is written and scheduled for tomorrow. Session One...

Buy High, Sell Low is a Dumb Economic Model

It would take players who care more about buying/selling than exploring/slaying. I would guess that a game other than D&D might be better suited to this type of campaign, since so much of D&D is focused on exploring/slaying, but I'm sure a good DM could make it work in D&D too. Personally...

Playing without a Controller - feasible?

If you're going to be missing one role, controller is the one to miss in my opinion. Side benefit: Especially at higher levels, controllers can really slow down combat with all of their conditions to track, so switching out a controller for a striker will probably make combat go faster.

Covers for the AD&D 1E Reprints

Cover images for 1e AD&D reprints are up Well, here they are: Cover images for 1e D&D reprints are now up | Online Dungeon Master They don't look all that great to me at this scale, but I'm hoping they'll look better "in the flesh". Edit: The more time I give them, the more the images...

    Backgrounds/Themes? Which do you use?

I've always allowed backgrounds as a way to give characters more flavor. I've only used themes in my ZEITGEIST campaign so far, where they tie the characters to the world. They're awesome for that! Generic themes feel more like power creep to me, but I know that they're widely beloved and...

    Public Transport in Indy?

A couple of friends of mine stayed near the airport last year, and they took a taxi back and forth to GenCon.
