    Attacking while climbing ?

Surprise! Again, this is a space for a house rule if it's something you feel strongly about. I think very few people would tell you that a house rule to penalize characters who attack while climbing would be unfair, as long as it's used consistently.

    RPG music

Sonic Legends is worth checking out. I don't use music much in my games, but when I did want some I used theirs.

    Critique my Magic Item

Ah, I see. I would perhaps phrase this as, "All squares within 1 square of the Stone are considered to be in dim light, regardless of other light sources in the area."

    Critique my Magic Item

At first blush, this doesn't seem like a very exciting item for a rare. I think there's some confusion about the light property. Is it intended to shed bright light within 1 square, which dims to dim light if there's a brighter light source? As written, it's dim light either way. If you'd like...

Monsters: Thunder Titan and Lightning Mote

I put these monsters together for a recent encounter in my War of the Burning Sky campaign and had a lot of fun with them. The whole encounter can be found here. The Thunder Titan tramples and bashes and huffs and puffs, all within a stormy aura. Meanwhile, Lightning Motes spring off from him...

Move and then charge, or *only* charge in a round?

Yep. There are ways around this, of course - the Badge of the Berserker is a well-used way of avoiding the opportunity attacks. But unless you have something special that changes the rule for you, the movement of a charge is just like any normal movement, provoking opportunity attacks as usual.

    Rule of 3: 10/31/2011

Speaking as someone who came to 4e as a new DM, I agree with their assessment that they should have included more fluff in the Monster Manual if they wanted it to be useful for someone like me. I truly did read through the stat blocks and come away confused about what the monsters were really...

Ray of Frost or Magic Missile?

As I recall, the advantages of the original Magic Missile over Ray of Frost are just the range, the damage, and the fact that MM can be used as a ranged basic attack (which generally only comes up if you have a warlord in the party who can grant ranged basic attacks). It's also a different...

    Attacking while climbing ?

Remember that this is a game. Remember also that 4e is not so big on simulating reality as earlier editions of the game. Reading the online compendium's glossary entry on the Athletics skill, which covers climbing, reveals no penalty to attacking while climbing. You DO grant combat advantage...

    Rock Falls, Everyone Dies

The rune (which you failed to notice) above the doorway triggers a powerful sleep spell as you stumble into the room. While you are locked down in magical slumber, the evil wizard's tiny constructs get to work carving up your innards to feed to his newest razor-fanged pet. ...you become the DM...

D&D 4e one-shot game for new players: Online (MapTool + Skype)

From time to time I like to run one-shot games for people who would like to try out D&D 4e but don't know much about it. I run my games using MapTool and Skype (both free programs). If you're interested, please either reply in this thread or send me a message. Let me know your availability and...

    RPG via Skype?

YES! This is actually what I blog about (see the link in my signature). There are lots of programs out there to help you play RPGs online. I personally use a free program called MapTool to let everyone see the same tabletop with tokens for monsters and PCs and so on, which also can handle dice...

Is it time to re-integrate the specific games sub-forums?

I'm a relative newbie, having been into RPGs and on EN World for less than two years, but I think the current system works well. I primarily play 4e, and I imagine that discussions about rules and builds for 4e characters and campaigns would be annoying to people who don't play the game. When I...

    Essentials: why the hate?

I've heard some people complain of power creep from Essentials (many of the feats being flat-out better than their predecessors; MBA-based classes being abusable with some pre-Essentials options). None of that is an issue for me, personally. I'm fine with all of the 4e material at my table (with...

Descent Into Darkness: Free heroic tier adventure with maps

I am indeed! I'm running the whole trilogy (Stolen Staff, Tallinn's Tower, Descent Into Darkness). Now, keep in mind that this is the same trilogy that I ran at TactiCon, so if you played in any of those you'll already be familiar with them.

    Dead Saving Throw

A quick example is the Sun Warpriest from Heroes of the Fallen Lands. Everyone within 5 squares of a Sun Warpriest gets a +2 bonus to death saving throws, so a 19 on the die becomes a 21 and lets you spend a healing surge.

Newer DM needs help with budding power gamer

Here's my perspective: Balanced-power parties are ideal. If you have a mixture of optimized and non-optimized PCs in the party, it can lead to problems. Either the encounters will be a reasonable challenge for the non-optimizers, but the optimizers will blow through it and steal the spotlight...

    Are encounters too easy?

If you're running older published adventures exactly as written in the original publication, then yes, you're going to find things to be too easy for most parties, especially at higher levels. If you're creating your own encounters, then the difficulty level is totally up to you. If no more...
