    Probability question: Advantage and Disadvantage

So, I'm still working my way through the playtest documents (loving them so far), but I had a question about the advantage/disadvantage mechanic. For those who haven't seen it yet, advantage means you roll two d20s and take the better roll, and disadvantage means you roll twice and take the...

    My grievance with D&D races

I just wanted to share a quick tale of an all-human party. It happened at GenCon 2011 in a Living Forgotten Realms game. There were four players (me and three of my friends) who knew each other beforehand but hadn't coordinated our characters at all. Then there was a married couple who might...

    Battle Maps Ideas

Ah, I understand now. The player's mini sits on top of their digital token. I've thought about doing that, but it never seemed worth the effort to me. Maybe it would be; I'll give it some thought.

    Battle Maps Ideas

Well, I've been using this setup for almost two years with no problems - so I'd say no, no problems with heat dissipation. Now, having a bottom-projection table would indeed be lovely, but my rig needs to be portable. I do run games at home, but I also frequently run games at my friendly local...

4E Fans: Could 13th Age be your Pathfinder?

Agreed with everyone else' 13th Age doesn't look like it's going to be very similar to 4e.

    D&D 5E (2014) Running D&D Next at local conventions

What do you expect DMs will be allowed to do with the D&D Next playtest materials as far as public play goes? Denver has a convention over Labor Day weekend called TactiCon, and they're asking DMs to submit games now that they want to run at that convention. I plan to run some D&D 4e games and...

Need a short adventure for new players

You're welcome to use my free adventures in the Staff of Suha trilogy. Each of the three is designed as a one-shot, and running the first one (The Stolen Staff) by itself without the others is perfectly fine (they're designed to stand alone). The Stolen Staff sees the players hired by a minor...

    Are you a preparation junky?

I'm another MapTool DM, so I do a lot of preparation in advance. It's worth it, though, because if I ever want to re-run an adventure I've run before, it's ready to go. If I'm running a long adventure rather than a one-shot, I'll admit that I'm happiest when I have the whole thing prepared in...

What will eventually be the classic adventures!

I agree that the Fourthcore stuff, particularly Revenge of the Iron Lich, has the potential to become a classic. It's certainly gotten a lot of positive attention. As for the Nentir Vale, both of the adventures I mentioned (Reavers of Harkenwold and Madness at Gardmore Abbey) are set there.

    latest gaming purchase ?

I bought Into The Unknown: The Dungeon Survival Handbook a little over a week ago. Before that, Lords of Waterdeep. And before that, Heroes of the Elemental Chaos.

What will eventually be the classic adventures!

I really only know 4e, but I would say that Reavers of Harkenwold (from the Essentials Dungeon Master's Kit) and Madness at Gardmore Abbey are both good enough to rise to the level of classics. However, since that requires them to be widely played, I'm not sure that will happen.

Where do you meet to play?

I'd suggest a few other options, or clarifying the options on the poll. I chose the first option, "In the home of one of us", since that's where my primary in-person group meets. However, I also have two groups that play online via MapTool and Skype, which is a valid option. Finally, I also...

D&D 5E (2014) Playtesting D&D Next: Reapers, Cantrips, Turnings, Rests...

It's not ignorance on your part; they haven't released the details yet. They HAVE said that the PCs are going to be pre-generated and that there won't be rules for character creation for us to test at first. My guess is that they'll give us an adventure to test-run and probably some adventure...

D&D 5E (2014) Playtesting D&D Next: Reapers, Cantrips, Turnings, Rests...

My in-person group was pretty amenable when I mentioned my interest in trying out the new game. More in an "Okay, whatever you like" way, not in a "Boy, I can't wait for that!" way. My online Friday night group seemed like they were somewhat amenable when I mentioned it in passing last week...

Time to bring back the prose?

I completely agree that the first books have to be engaging, and that the first 4e books were not. What I'm saying, though, is that the later 4e books are still accessible to younger readers, but ALSO engaging. I want (and expect) to see the first D&D Next books to be written in a similar way...

Time to bring back the prose?

Morrus - you keep referring to current books, and it sounds like you're only talking about books from 2008. Have you read Heroes of the Feywild? Even Heroes of the Fallen Lands / Forgotten Kingdoms are much better in this respect than the 4e PHB1. D&D 4e has gotten better about being readable...

How to make a Duelist/Fencer Class?

I know nothing about older duelists, but I would expect that using the Thief or Slayer from Heroes of the Fallen Lands could make for a great character in this theme. The Thief would give you more maneuverability (fancy footwork) while the Slayer would give you better survivability (though you...

    Write this game for adults

You know, I almost always agree with the Guvnor, but in this case I don't. I understand that WotC is aiming to attract non-4e players back to D&D with D&D Next. I don't think that means that they should abandon the idea of attracting new players, nor do I expect them to do so. As I said, read...
